AUDIO SYNC DISCUSSION
Time

A discussion started in another thread about audio delays.

I just uploaded this to YOUTUBE:

SOUND EXPERIMENT

You will see one clip from House 3x16

three times, one of which it will be in correct sync,

one will have a 4 frames audio delay

and in one the sound will be 1 frame ahead.

Can you tell which is which upon the first viewing?

Please comment.

Having colour corrected the whole 2004SE Jedi myself, I assure you that the lightsabres aren't a screwup in themselves, it is the overall colour and brightness issues that cause the lightsabres to look like they do.

Look at this clip of ROTJ lightsabre fight comparison between the 2004SE and my PDE. All I did was adjusted the contrast brightness and colours, I didn't rerotoscope or anything.

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)

Thanks for the kind words. I used the SE credits but cut out the SE part :-) There's a visible transition where the SE subs originally started but I figured it shouldn't really matter, I think that being anal about the credits is just being anal for the heck of it. I only cut out the SE credits to make it approximately the right length.

It's one or two frames, that doesn't make it out of sync. And there are two aditional frame, one is missing so in the end, you end up with one frame difference. When I was editing, I'm sure a few frames were lost in the process anyway, I don't think it's a big deal. Could you actually tell when the audio is one frame out of sync? Because I definitely couldn't.

Are you referring to the 04 dvd's? if so they're not even close sorry.

Whaaaaat? You crazy? No, I was referring to the 70mm scans.

You may have noticed one of my previous posts:

I have been reading this tread with interest and I must admit that I got a little scared that we may have complained injustly about the 2004 SE colour-timing but I did a little comparison and there's just no way that the 2004 SE is anywhere near the correct colour-timing but it's true that the GOUT footage could do with a little colour boost, though I'm pretty sure that the GOUT's colour-timing cannot be quite trusted either, boosted or not. I'd think that the trailer should actually be a pretty good reference.

I think he was reacting to my post.

And sure, the trailers might not be the most accurate source but what I was considering is that the colours in the trailer are almost the same as the GOUT although being from a different transfer done at a different time, while the 2004 colours are totally different, so it's more likely that the 2004 colours were screwed up, than that all the previous transfers were.

edit: and the 70mm frames are mostly quite faded - blue or pink shifted, so that's hardly an accurate source either:

EDIT of EDIT: Although, in the light of the most recent findings, it seems that the 70mm scans of SW and ESB  might actually have quite accurate colours.

I saw the Spartacus reconstruction in a theater and you'd never know it was that far removed from the negative. And that was years ago, Harris probably can do some amazing things now.

Maybe it's not that far removed from the o-neg, maybe he did develop a way to only use one of the 3 masters for fine detail (which would be the equivalent of using an IP in terms of grain and detail but the resulting image would be black-and-white with wrong levels) and then using all three to give it proper colouring. It would be a process similar to colourizing a black-and-white movie.

OT: I'm still not getting this set. I have the DVDs, which leave me in the clear for fanedits... I think... I hope...

Strictly speaking no, less strictly speaking only if it's the same transfer and even less strictly speaking it's up to your own conscience, after all it is in a legal grey area in any case.

But I think it would be a bad idea to use all 3 separation masters, because it would mean combining 3 different film strips together, thus combing four different grain patterns (that of the o-neg plus one for each of the seps), so the sep-masters combined would have to be 3 generations worse than the o-neg and that's assuming they were stuck directly from the negative.

I wrote a PM to him some time ago, asking him about this and here's what he replied:

Petr,

The Star Wars situation is a great deal of publicity "sizzle" without the steak.

While there are technical deficiencies with the original elements do to the manner in which the fx elements were

produced and conformed, there are also full and complete separation masters.  I created a process which would

yield original quality without the use of the three masters.

The bottom line is that there are no real problems with any of the elements that would prevent the creation of

original version elements, inclusive of down-rez to HD video masters, that would be anything less than stellar.

This is less about the film elements and more in regard to Mr. Lucas' desire to have the newer versions front

and center.  And that is his right.  While many of us prefer the original versions, that does not control the marketplace.

My offer to restore the films for GL was half in jest, and more to make the point that it was all very doable.  There is nothing here

that cannot be dealt with to a point of perfection.

All best,

RAH
