GOUT, Automated Theatrical Colouring, and a Reference Guide

Not knowing sh*t about avisynth, I gave this a shot in photoshop and I don't think any major colour correction can be done with one setting to the whole film, because I tried one shot and the results were pretty good IMO and then when I applied the same settings to a different shot, it looked awful. But both looked better after the initial saturation increase, so maybe just increase the saturation a little bit and leave it at that.

Here are the picture I tried, I think it's pretty self-explanatory but just to make sure:

1) Original GOUT

2) My tweaked version of picture 1

3) Original GOUT

4) Picture 3 tweaked with the exact same settings as 2

5) Picture tweaked with completely different settings

What this tells me is, that this kind of correction would be really time consuming because it would have to be done scene by scene and in many cases shot by shot and that it would be next to impossible to do it with something like avisynth, because you need to keep trying until you're ok with, which is quite time consuming even in photoshop where you can see the results in real time and if you couldn't see the results right away, it would be impossible to do a whole film (well, unless you had five years of free time and a lot of dedication ;-) )

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

Yeah, I always wondered about that, it's the same when Obi-Wan dies. This way it seems like he has to keep holding the button when it's on.

Edit: Oops, late again. But it think it'd be shit to have to hold the button all the time, quite impractical.

Yeah, the only way around the bantha heard thing would have been to either use the GOUT footage for that shot or to slow it down, both of which would be even worse IMO. But as it's usually the only complaint that people have, I've been trying to figure out a way to improve it, so in v2.0 it should be fixed. But that is a long way off as I think I'll be waiting for the Blu-Rays for that.

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)
Time

Good news everyone :-)

Thanks to Chewtobacca's hard work, an NTSC DVD5 is available now!

Details:

NTSC DVD-5

GOUT chapter stops

no menu

AC-3 2.0 at 224kbps sourced from Belbucus' PCM.

Chewtobacca has done a wonderful job converting the film to NTSC, it is of course a bit softer due to the lower resolution of NTSC but the decrease in quality due to the re-compression is absolutely minimal. I would still recommend the MKV to anyone who has the tech to play it though, because it is still slightly better quality and resolution and it has better audio options at the same file size.

So you can send me a PM if you're interested in either the DVD5 or the MKV.

As for the PAL DVD9, it may take some time, because I'm currently in the middle of my exam time. Hell, I should be studying right now!!! :-D

Guys, I have a question, I'm going to watch my ROTJ PDE on an HD projector but as I have to use my laptop, I only have a stereo jack (or whatever is the connector usually used for headphones called) output for audio and I have 2.1 speakers connected to it. Am I better off using the 448Kbps 5.1 or the 384 Kbps 2.0 sound? In other words, when the output is stereo only will the LFE channel have any effect?

And I'd like to pose the same question about stereo headphones or 2.0 speakers.

In my opinion when a person claims they restored a movie, everything must be cleaned and recomposited.

Noooooooooooooooo! That's not restauration, that's mutilation, I explained here, why the recompositing botheres me more than the CG addition in the SE.

Yeah, when I said the garbage mates were a problem created by the video transfer, my point was that them being visible is caused by the video transfer, I know that they are actually present on the film but like Puggo says, they were (at least for the most part) invisible - ie weren't a part of the original experience and so they shouldn't be visible on video either - but it should be achieved by a proper transfer not digital tweaking. But I guess if nothing else worked, then, as long as nothing else was altered along the way, even their digital removal would be OK, because I think they fall in the same category as dirt and scratches.

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

Here's the ISSUE no.2 of the comic. This one isn't all finished but it is much more interesting because while in the first one almost nothing has changed from the movie, in this part almost everything has changed. I tried to keep Han's character closer to his original self and Boba Fett gets a much more major role. A we'll see Kashyyyk.

I've had this "imperial centre" idea years ago but I always thought it would be impossible to make as a fan edit, so I never even suggested it. But at that time, I saw an ESB comic book that was compiled from screenshots, so using screenshots from ROTJ and using photoshop I started working on a comic book which I called Revenge of the Jedi and was supposed to be a better version of ROTJ. Sort of a comic book fan edit. But I never finished it. I had a whole treatment written but I only ever finished two parts out of four planned. Here's a website that shows a part of it: http://revengeofthejedi.wz.cz/

Please note that I did this when I was 16 or so, so neiter my English nor my photoshop skills were very good. The comic has gone through some changes since then but it shows the general idea.

Oh, that's possible, I didn't notice that (I usually don't notice sound stuff like this). But it is possible, that the frame count deviates slightly from Adywan's Empire reconstruction (I used his audio mix) so maybe you could try muxing in hairy_hen's 5.1 mix instead and see if that fixes the problem, other than that, it is possible that there are a few frames missing somewhere in the SE that I missed, so the only way to fix it might be to actually edit the sound.
