Wow, that forum certainly is an interesting read :-)
Wow, that forum certainly is an interesting read :-)
Well, yeah, it's different when it's one shot here and there but having the quality change from shot to shot for the whole sequence would look pretty bad. That was the problem with the Sarlacc pit scene but the altered shots were still in such a minority there, that is would have been shit to use GOUT for the whole scene.
Yeah, that's exactly the problem, most of the original shots are there, but they are shortened, so I couldn't use them because a change in quality in the middle of a shot is far more obvious than between shots.
OK, I'm not saying that's how I necessarily think it is, but what if this screenshot is a fake too:
I did that in photoshop. And since no-one seems to ever actually have seen that black-magic clip as video...

To me that "Look sir, droids" shot just looks like it could be color corrected 2004 DVD footage.
That's what I thought too and the fact that it is cut off on both ends at exactly the time which would reveal it as an SE shot (just after the digital Dewback would be out of the frame at the beginning and just before the wipe to the new SE sandcrawler at the end) only supports that theory.
OK, that shot does look amazing, compared to the GOUT. Here's a screenshot:
Is this all you have of that shot though? Because as it is it is completely unusable: First and foremost it's not the complete shot and it only shows the part of that shot that is identical in the SE (which actually makes me a little suspicious to be honest) and second it's a weird resolution of 720x280.

"I want it all, I want it all, I want it now!!!"
No seriously, these two shots would be awesome to have, especially this one:
In GOUT this shot looks like sh*t (possibly the worst shot in the whole thing), so it would be extremely valuable for any future reconstruction (I would have loved to use this in my SW PDE to get rid of the stupid dinosaur but the GOUT quality was too bad) so maybe in v.3.0...
Sadly, this is the shot I'm having trouble locating at the moment. I'll have to do some more digging on my other drive and see if I maybe saved it to a different location than the other one. If I can't find it, it means I never actually got it from Laserman, or that he never actually sent it to me in the first place, which would suck.
Oh, yeah, that would suck major ass, because while the 4 eyed stormtrooper shot looked like shit, it isn't beyond salvation because it is mostly the same in the SE, so it could have been restored though some compositing. The shot in the picture is altered so much for the SE and looks so shit on the GOUT that getting rid of the new additions through compositing would be next to impossible.
To you people who already have this, what do you think about how the ending celebration video looks? It's completely GOUT but the video quality of the GOUT fluctuates quite a lot and I thought this was one of the scenes that looked really good, so as there weren't many shots I could have used from the SE, I decided to make it all GOUT, instead of intercutting between better and worse quality all the time.
Sure it's still worth signing the new petition, I don't think we can realistically expect the it to change the way this Blu-Ray set will be but maybe the next one (c'mon you know there's gonna be a next one).
And thanks for the link Akwat Kbrana.

My GOUT DVD's will only collect dust now.
I totally agree. Between this and Adywan's ESB reconstruction the only GOUT I have any use for is for SW. And at the moment I think I'm using the GForce version or pwned I can't remember.
Unfortunately SW is my favourite film and the one I watch more often. I know Adywan said he'll be doing a reconstruction of it in the future, which is awesome, but the sad thing is no matter how many years that is off in the future he'll still surely beat a Lucasfilm restoration.
Any way, I downloaded the DVD5 two nights ago and sat down last night with a glass of wine intending to scan through it on my 50inch tv (previously only watch the mkv on my computer monitor). Well I ended up watching almost 3/4 of it instead (scanned through the battle of endor) with a couple of extra glasses of wine. Pretty epic.
I had the same wow reaction as watching Adywans ESB reconstruction, was it last May? Sure it's not perfect but neither is Adywan's and what in this world is. But it's pretty damn close to my personal viewing preference without being a true theatrical restoration. And with Lucas being such a shithead it's much more than adequte as my go to for watching ROTJ.
Thanks, I'm really glad that people enjoy it.
I also noticed the black frames already mentioned. I just thought it was my dvd/player being a bitch.
A tiny issue, that may not even be an issue:

This shot looked weird and out of the ordinary noticeable. Is it the compression that's caused it. I checked the mkv and it's the same. Maybe the DVD9 will clear it up.
Unfortunately, no, it won't because I just checked and it's a glitch that is already present in the master. It seems something's gone wrong in adding the subtitle into this shot and I didn't notice it during the editing, because when you edit, you only see the video in a small window, so things like this are far less noticeable :-( Hopefully these small glitches won't ruin anyone's enjoyment.
Can you, please, post a link to the petition?

One that comes to mind is maybe a recoloring of the DS interior, which he has agreed about in the past.
I really hope he does that, I was checking ANH:R right now and comparing it to Ady's AVCHD colours and ANH:R looks almost black and white compared to the AVCHD colours, which was also corrected by Adywan and the colours there are beautiful IMO, so it would be great if he took the same approach to the colour correction as he did with the AVCHD.
And also, as it seems my previous post got kinda lost, how about only making a selectable soundmix, which wouldn't feature the added music?
double post*
Yeah, I figured most people wouldn't.
Thanks, yeah, I'm aware of the 2 black frames glitch, it was already in the PDE but it's really minor IMO.
I must say my memory is very rusty, but I'm pretty sure I lurked here before 2006 but probably not before 2004 (I really wish there was a way to find out but I logged in at the time as Harmy, then I stopped coming here for a while and I forgot my password, so when I remembered this site later, I made a new account as Lord__Vader, a name I was using at another forum, and then when I started doing some projects of my own, I asked Jay to change my forum name back to my preferred nick Harmy, so there's hardly a way to find out when I first posted).
The way I found out about this was, when I was looking for the original original trilogy on the internet and mr. GOOGLE led me to this place :-)
No, I didn't make this. It's from collegehumor.com :-)
Wow, I don't know about the blue tint but I really liked the reflection of the cloud-car in the window :-)
Assuming you'll be relasing this on BD as well as AVCHD, how about an alternative soundtrack, where everything would be your soundmix except without the added music? It could be 2.0 for the AVCHD and 5.1 for BD.
Thanks to EyeShotFirst Oldschooljedi, canadianbs101 and ThiefCobbler4ever for the kind words :-) I'm glad you like it.
As to the sound mix, like hairy_hen already said, it should fit his 5.1 mix without the need to set any delay, only then it won't fit a DVD5 AND I definitely wouldn't recommend recompressing the video of the NTSC DVD5. Chainsawash should be fine with recompressing the MKV.

So what was actually not changed from the SE?

Anything that is not here. Mostly it is just things that are practically un-noticeable when viewing the film normally.
I altered the first post:
RETURN OF THE JEDI - ORIGINAL THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION
This is a little Leia to Adywan's Luke. It is an anamorphic reconstruction of the original cut of ROTJ using the HD broadcast of the 2004 version, the GOUT and GKAR German anamorphic digi broadcast of 97SE.
Here is what is changed back to the original version:
FYI: The whole ending celebration is completely back to the original state and the whole film is colour corrected - Here's a colour correction comparison, left is SE right is the RECONSTRUCTION:
The colours are not 100% faithful because it's a JPG but it gives you the general idea - it's pretty subtle for the most part.
Yeah, it's pretty much in line with my colour correction, only for my taste it is perhaps a tad too deblued and desaturated, for example the panels in the eighth picture are supposed to be blue IMO.
Wow, thanks for the thorough answer. So for my laptop I'll be sticking to stereo. And at home, where I have a 5.1 analogue output from my desktop computer's sound card with 2.1 speakers connected (stereo speakers connected through jack and a subwoofer connected through it's own jack) I'll go with the 5.1, right?
