Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

Oh, I actually did darken it quite a bit. It is almost as dark as the GOUT now. The thing is, once you start darkening it, you start loosing considerable amount of detail due to the crashed blacks of the source, so you kind of have to find a good balance.

And for Empire, I'm actually using Ady's 14GB MKV and tweaking the colours of that, because I think that generally the colour correction is fantastic in Ady's version, he just went a little too heavy in places.

Thanks, guys. What do you reckon about the colours? I'm using the idea discussed in this thread; i.e. I'm using the GOUT with boosted saturation as a reference. I'm doing it with some moderation of course, taking the red shift and other issues of the GOUT into account and also comparing it with other sources like the 70mm scans and such.

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

Hey, 005, I'm back, this time hopefully with something useful :-) The description of this shot isn't quite right:

It says: "This shot has been zoomed in on, though the sky plate and model elements has remained the same size."

(1997 Change)

While actually the shot isn't only zoom in but also shifted. In the SE, there is only a little less on the sides but a lot less at the top and and you can see more at the bottom. Also the sky plate and model elements are composited in exactly the same place as in the original. Here's a quick photoshop overlay to show what I mean:

Also, the shot immediately before this one was also zoomed in, so you may want to add it.

Hope this helps,

Harmy.

I now have all the stuff I needed for Empire thanks to Adywan and OmegaMattman.

Ady was kind enough to send me all the mattes he could find on his HDD plus all the finished scenes from his ESB reconstruction that he could find in high bitrate mkv at 1024x576, which is pretty close to 720p, so I was able to use some of them as they were and use some of them for rotoscoping. It was a great help. Thanks Ady.

I also downloaded OmegaMattman's great 720p GOUT Empire upscale and used it for some rotoscoping and although it has some issues, it was a great source for this kind of work. Thanks Mattman.

Anyway, I'm like 95% done with all the shots on my "to do" list and now I've got a few shots on the "to maybe do" list.

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

Yeah, 16:9 is the standard for all HD releases. Anamorphic only exists for DVD and if the film is 2.35:1, it also contains black borders. If you played an anamorphic DVD or Blu-Ray of a 2.35:1 film on the TV in your link (which is really rare) you would have to zoom in to get rid of the boarders. And if you wanted to watch a film that is 16:9 on it (or basically any TV program) you'd have to either zoom it in and crop the top and bottom or watch with black boarders on the sides.

I'm not sure whether that's a compliment or an insult, so I choose to take it as a compliment ;-D

I just like that picture, though it is a bit out of date, I've got a bit of a beard situation going on now :-)

I'm not really a badass at all though, smartass, maybe, but not a badass :-D
Compliment, definitely. It may be the cigarette, or the sideburns. You look like you could kick my ass.

He he, I'm probably the most peaceful person I know :-) I've never been in a fight in my life, I always talked myself out of it :-)

I used a hi-res matte painting for that shot, so you can actually see more of the painting than in the SE. That's why I want the other matte paintings. It also made me realize, that unless I get a new computer, which is not likely to happen any time soon, I won't be able to make any edits in a resolution higher than 720p, because the painting was 1600x1200 and the computer just wasn't able to deal with it properly, so full HD video is out of the question in After Effects for me.
