Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

Here's another little something :-)

I would also like to repeat my request for any hi-res original matte paintings. I know they're out there because Ady used them for his ESB Reconstruction and I'd like to do the same to actually keep those scenes where he used them HD and not just an upscale of Ady's version with HD elements added.

Thanks. You know, as much crap as we give the SE, they worked really hard on them. Sure, not all of the decisions were great, but they did good with what they were supposed to do.

I must disagree. While despecializing the shots, I noticed there was a lot of lazy rotoscoping done for the SEs and some other changes are technically not that great either.

Also, 005, you asked me to tell you if I notice any more changes, so here goes:

R2 was also recoloured in all the shots when Luke comes to the Cloud City and is flying through the clouds.

EDIT: Oops, sorry, you've already got it, I must have overlooked it.

Harmy's STAR WARS TRILOGY "Partly Despecialized Edition" HD. !!! These version are now obsolete - Look for Despecialized Editions instead!!!

I just muxed the original 1.0 video with hairy_hen's sound mixes, so if you don't want to download the whole thing over and just want to remux yours, go here and download them, you'd go about it exactly the same way as when applying the audio fix. :-)

That is the biggest problem I keep running into, the way the crawl breaks apart towards the top, and the funky glow on Tantiv IV's engines as it goes by, if I could just figure that out.

Wow, DJ, that sample looks much better, in comparison with your mkv sample it actually looks like a difference between HD and DVD. I don't know anything about scripting but if you can adjust the settings on a shot by shot basis, you may want to hold back on sharpening on the crawl and the flyby as that's what I think is causing the issues you mention. You must remember that that whole shot is taken from a different source than the rest of the GOUT.

I certainly wouldn't mind posting some frames but I don't know how to export a frame from After Effects like that, so if anyone can tell me how, I'll be happy to do it. I also just fixed the issue in the first shot where Luke activates his lightsabre and when he lifts it to his face, it gets all blurry.

Also, 005, thanks for the comparisons, they're an awesome source. I knew there was something off about the lightsabres in that scene but I would have thought it could be fixed through colour correction. Based on your comparisons, I also fixed the overblown flash when Luke cuts Vader's head off. I tried just toning down the brightness but that didn't work, so I had to rotoscope in the original flash from GOUT. It would have been better if I could have used the 97SE but I still can't find it anywhere - the only one I found was Reivax SW.

GOUT, Automated Theatrical Colouring, and a Reference Guide

Cool, I'm interested in this as a way of finding out what the colours should be for colour correction.

Btw, I noticed this:

One drawback of saturating the GOUT is that it sometimes brings out the flaws in the master. Although difficult to see from a still, this shot has a lot of video noise and artifacting in the sky, because the original negative is very grainy and also because the video master has a hard time with strong primary colours. This noise is on the uncorrected GOUT but it becomes more noticeable when saturated. The 2004 master had the same problem with this shot as well, and you can see it in the Puggo 16mm too.

The 2004 master can't possibly have the same problem with this particular shot as it's been replaced by a completely new one for the SE.

What thread is this again?
I agree. Plenty of threads for this argument, gentlemen. Lets take it outside. :-)

+1 and I think that not outside of this thread but outside of this forum, it's been here so many times and it leads nowhere. G E Predator, why don't you go here and read what this site is about and then if you still feel like coming back and repeating what you just said, why don't you also go to a mosque and start spreading the gospel there, while you're at it?

They look really good.

But I am wondering Harmy, for this next release are you going to make higher bitrate versions available and offer even more audio?

I know that for ANH, you are using Ady's AVCHD so you are limited there, but Ady has a 13gb ESB that is in .mkv format which is a much higher bitrate than his AVCHD, and for ROTJ you probably already know that there are some high quality bitrate 2004 HD broadcasts.

Absolutely, I already said I'm going to use the 14GB MKV of Ady's ESB and higher bitrate versions of SW (I'm not using Ady's AVCHD of SW this time) and ROTJ. They will be 720p DVD9 AVCHDs; I'm absolutely decided on that, I don't want to make these Blu-Ray because I haven't got access to a BD burner and the uploads would be painful too but I want it to be playable on BD players. 720p looks great - actually I've got a 6,5GB 720p version of AOTC and it looks way better than an 8GB 1080p version because the compression took away more detail on the 1080p than what was gained by the resolution. I'll also be encoding HQ 2PASS this time to keep as much quality as possible, so don't worry. Noticing the loss of quality and detail in the previous PDE versions was actually the main reason that prompted me to make new versions, so I'll try to make these the highest possible quality given the source materials.

Also, for ROTJ will you be fixing the brightness thing at the end in the Luke Vs Vader throne room fight? I think they are a few frames in there that make the black bars white/grey from where you tweaked the brightness a bit.

Oh, absolutely, that is already fixed in the DVD reconstruction and it will be fixed in the new PDE as well.

As to the audio, I'm not sure I'll be adding anything else, each disc will definitely contain 3 audio tracks: hairy_hen's 5.1, Belbucus' 2.0 in some higher bitrate AC3 and a low bitrate Czech Dubing. And maybe some additional ones, if there's enough space, like the monomix for SW or maybe some commentary tracks.

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)

Thanks. Yeah, I warned you not to expect anything great from the menu. I found the work on it quite boring, so I din't really give it all the attention it may have needed. It serves it's purpose though.

As to the "soon you will learn to appreciate me" shot, somebody already pointed it out and yeah, it seems that something's gone wrong in the encoding when adding the subtitle, cuz it's got more compression artefacts, but I don't think it's anything gruesome.

I was commenting on you saying that the PAL set did not suffer from the green tint on the left side, YES it does

Sorry, I didn't mean that at all, I meant the overall green tint as shown in the screencaps I posted. It was a misunderstanding and I apologise :-) The colours are definitely improved overall, it was just the crawl that I noticed.
