Just finished watching the workprint. Had only meant to flip through it a bit right then, and save an analysis for later, but I just couldn't stop looking at it! lol

The compositing work is superb, you've got a lot to be proud of with that. The colouring is already miles ahead of the 2004 version, and would be pretty watchable as it is. However, there are still a number of issues with the colour, and tomorrow I'm going go go through it again and make a detailed list of everything I see. Many of these issues are fixable, although some of them may not be, at least not without tedious work, but I'm sure we'd all like this to be the best it can be. ;)

Thanks, I'm looking forward to what you'll come up with. I can't promise I'll be able to fix everything (although I'm already working on correcting the pink flashes, which is something I wasn't gonna do, but I probably won't catch them all.) but it's better to hear the suggestion now and find out if I can do anything about them, than to beat myself up over something I could have fixed, but wasn't pointed out to me until after release :-)

Harmy, here's the rest of my review:

40:30 - Gout seems to cut to Mos Eisley view just a frame later than Despecialized Edition. (no biggie, just something I noticed)

Actually it's just one frame and that happens a few times in the film but it will never be 100% frame accurate anyway and even different transfers of the original aren't frame accurate to each other, so like you say, it's no biggie :-)

40:43 - Your re-created background of Mos Esiley seems to be a little less sharp than I remember seeing in your clips.

Interesting, it's exactly the same clip as shown in the last two youtube vids.

48:50 - I know you've already worked miracles with this scene. I just wish there was a way to reduce the jumpiness of the GOUT footage.

Yeah, I wish that too but believe me, I tried, there's just nothing more I can do :-(

49:41 - The double wipe is still too noticeable. Can you do any more with GOUT footage, like blend it in as the fade gets darker?

I'm definitely not using GOUT for this, the drop in quality would be more noticeable than what's there now and to be honest, I like it the way it is and it was a lot of work, as I had to recreate parts of some of the frames to do it and I hope one wipe isn't going to be a deal breaker for anyone.

1:21:10 (and 1:21:17) - Can the previous shot of the falcon in the hangar (which you restored beautifully) be zoomed in and used here?

I thought about that, but once you zoom it in, you get to pretty much the same (or even worse) quality as what it is now and it's not even the same painting. I wish I could find a higher quality source for that matte painting :-(

1:25:40 - Obi Wan's saber seems to suffer from a small well-defined tip that extends beyond the fuzzy glow.

Yeah, not much I can do about that one either but it's just one or two shots. I tried to make it less prominent but it's still there.

1:27:32 - Strange blue haze around the falcon's engines. Maybe that's supposed to be there, but it looks weird. It reminds me of the blue haze in the SE's death star explosion.

Again, I know about this issue and it appears a few times but sadly, there's not much I can do about that one either.

1:29:02 - Garbage matte around TIE is particularly noticeable. I hope you can tone this down.

Those should all be pretty much gone :-)

1:55:29 - Sound drops off before credits finish. You probably know this though ;)

Yeah, it's just a temp track :-)

These are the only faults I can find. Otherwise, this is spectacular, and will probably be the only version (other than Revisited) that I allow to be shown in my house. Thanks!

Thank you for checking the WP out and for giving me your feedback exactly the way I asked, you win the prize of the best WP reviewer so far ;-)

Well, the cave question was obviously answered in the EU - and in the good one (at lest for me) too. It's explained in Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, and the answer is quite cool IMHO but I won't post it, I don't want to stop anyone's imagination by an official explanation. If you want to know, I'm sure you can find out for yourselves :-)

But it's awesome how Ady re-rotoscoped the LS while keeping their original look. People always say how they should have newly re-rotoscoped the sabres in the SE but I'm really glad they didn't, because they'd never do such a fine job as what Ady's giving us here, they would just re-rotoscope them to look like in the prequels, which are horrible - the OT LS have an organic feel to them, they flicker, which is something that was completely left out of the prequels, where the LS just look so perfect that they look fake, or at least in ep2 and 3, LS actually looked pretty good in TPM. And Ady kept this organic feel, while enhancing them tastefully where necessary and that's awesome and something I'm afraid we'd never get from LFL.

My only problem is that I don't really like the light coming from where the sabres are touching, it was never there in any of the original films

The flash when two sabers meet was first seen in the original duel between Vader and old Ben, I love that we're seeing consistency with that. =)

Erm, no. We don't see light coming out of the point the sabres are touching each other when they stay together in any of the OT films. There's only a flash at the moment they clash and that's always been in all the OT films.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

Adywan just released a comparison video of his new lightsabres vs. 04SE and I was glad to see that it looks similar to the way I colour corrected that scene in the Despecialized Edition. He of course re-rotoscoped the sabres, so his are higher quality but the general impression is very similar.

I'll post a comparison video later :-)

That looks OK, because both sources are DVD res, but it still stands out because of the grain. Maybe a bit of denoise wouldn't hurt it? I wouldn't recommend heavy denoising on a whole film, but with one shot like this it's ok to make it fit with the rest. So if you're doing this in AE, I'd apply remove grain and sharpen effects (in sensible amounts of course). Or you could just run it through your script.

Thanks for the clip, Ady, it looks great! Did you rerotoscope all the sabres or did you just colour correct some of the shot?

My only problem is that I don't really like the light coming from where the sabres are touching, it was never there in any of the original films and I personally like it that way, but that's just me and I totally understand why you'd want to do it :-)

And @ Jaitea: LOL :-)

I don't know why I do these things to myself, cuz it took way more than just five minutes (although it was actually pretty easy) but here it is :-)
Love it. You just bumped what I was going to call "98% accurate" to "99% accurate". ;-)

And I bet you didn't know that I also fixed all these ;-) :

(Didn't get rid of the haze completely but minimized it - and you can't see it in this picture but when you look closely, it's there in the GOUT as well, just not as prominent.)

(Left the recomped matte but got rid of the added pan)

Great Harmy, so far ... love the red sky! ...now wasn't that easy enough?? ;)

Well, actually, no, it wasn't easy at all :-P It was really hard to match the colour as the shot is much darker in the SE and completely different colour. There was also a missing frame in one of the sources, which had to be accounted for and also, three seconds is fucking long to rotoscope something as detailed as a human face that is moving unpredictably. I had to denoise and enhance the GOUT background and match the grain of the SE, which was made much more visible by the brightening. And the result is still not perfect. But in the end, I'm glad I did it :-)
