Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1

Well, of course the shot doesn't stand out in DJ's GOUT - it's all GOUT, so the whole scene looks like crap, so there's nothing for it to stand out from - no disrespect to DJ, he's working miracles with it but sometimes you just can't polish a turd enough and this whole particular scene is pure turd in the GOUT, which I suspect may have to do with there being a lot of subtitles in that scene, so a different source was used for it:

Some interesting info from THX Technical Supervisor Dave Schnuelle regarding the process of making the Definitive Collection Laserdiscs In the September 1993 issue of Widescreen Review:

...

"One small difference from the original films is that in letterbox transfers we prefer to put any subtitles in the black border beneath the actual picture area. Thus we didn't use the same interpositive as the theatrical one, because that one contains subtitling already.

...

But it does stand out pretty badly in my ROTJ Reconstruction and that's only DVD quality, so it would be like a punch inserted into HD footage.

Yeah, I don't know what else you'd have me do. The GOUT would stand out really badly and there's no other source I could use. It is a cop out, I admit it, it just seems like the best possible solution. The only other thing I could do is keep the SE Boba Fett shot and I'm not doing that.

On a different note, here's a comparison of some of the subs that are in the Empire of Dreams documentary. Top is EoD, bottom is DeEd (before colour correction):

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)

I'm hoping I'll get to watch it on a projector, that would be cool. You know what would also be interesting? If you could include an alternate mix that would have a slight projector clanking sound added as a constant background sound (ideally in 5.1 and have the clanking only come from behind :-) ) and maybe add slight dropouts at reel changes. It would add to the atmosphere of actually watching a 16mm film at home :-)

Thanks :-) Yeah, the problem there is that the elements are slightly shifted in the recomps, so they don't align well. The KGar footage is pretty good in terms of resolution (as far as anamorphic DVD goes) but it has pretty bad compression and even worse DVNR artefacts. And the GOUT doesn't suffer from these problems as much but it's even lower res and is quite grainy, so I think I will have to just keep the recomps.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

There's no discussion going on  there...

Let me try too.

Harmy's OT.com version of TFN forum's SW on Blu thread post:

Everyone, please repeat after me:

Guys, you wouldn't believe how unexcited I am to see all six STAR WARS films in 1080p (because I already have and because three are shit and the other three are f*cked with horrible CG and f*cked up colours) and with (quite likely horrible) new 6.1 DTS HD audio mixes.

Are you going to be using any of the GOUT footage for the Rancor scene like you did in the theatrical reconstruction?  The change over was really distracting.  Since you did remove the garbage mattes in SW DeEd I don't see why you'd want to keep the matte lines in Jedi.

A) I don't see what garbage mattes have to do with this. Garbage mattes are something completely different than matte lines. Matte lines were visible in cinemas every time since opening day until 1997 or 2004. Garbagge mattes, under ideal conditions, should not be visible - they are there but you don't see them - and that's exactly what I did in SW DeEd: I adjusted the levels to make the garbage mattes invisible. If you pumped up the brightness in those shots, you'd find the garbage mattes are still there.

B) I don't think the original Rancor was distracting in the Reconstruction - all the shots except for maybe one blended in really well, because I used natively anamorphic footage from GKar 97SE.

C) The GKar footage would look like shit in HD and so does the GOUT in this scene, so after unsuccessfully trying to somehow restore the original compositing, while using the HD footage (like I did here or here for example), I decided to just leave in the 04SE shots. I'm seriously not happy about it but it seems like I don't really have a choice in the matter.

Do you rearrange (cut) the audiotracks also, then?

I'm asking, because I replaced the czech audiotrack on SW and ESB with the audiotrack in my motherlanguage. Therefore I had to demux my PAL GOUT DVD's, slowed the audio down from 25fps to 23,9 fps and remuxed the video- and audiostreams. My new created audiostreams matched perfectly with your videostream.

So, I will probably have to cut my ROTJ audiotrack???

No no, the whole point of inserting the shot in there was to keep it in sync with the GOUT audio. I'm really bad with audio editing, so I'm trying to avoid it by making the video sync with the audio.

No, it will stay the way it is here. It's a reverse shot of Chewie from later in the scene. I always said I was gonna have to do that in order to remove the stupid added shot of Boba Fett flirting with the SE dancers. I did it exactly like this in the PDE and I think it works really well. In the ROTJ DVD Reconstruction I decided to use the GOUT shot and it stands out like a sore thumb even at DVD resolution, because that particular shot looks like crap in the GOUT. I experimented with only using Jabba from GOUT for the missing part but the quality difference is so huge that it just wouldn't work.
