Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

It depends on a point of view. I've got about 25% of it cut together and I'm about half way through  making the subs. But seeing as how I've already got all the other despecialized shots finished, I would say I'm nearly 90% done with Jedi altogether. But it's so f*cking hot here now that all I feel like doing is lying down watching movies, so my workflow is somewhat slowed down - therefore the prolonged estimated firing range ;-)

Good news, everyone!!! I spent quite some time looking for the original 70s 20th Century Fox logo present in the original SW in HD and today, I got the original MASH movie on Blu and found out that it's there, so I'll be able to use it :-)

I already had the 80s Fox logo used in Jedi in HD from the D-Box Alien DC, so now I'll be able to use an actual HD Fox logo in SW as well.

Yeah, I'm integrating them into the video in AE and I'm trying to make them look as much a part of the film as possible by having them slightly blurred and going a tiny little bit in and out of focus and making them very slightly shaky and adding slight grain to them.

The font is Franklin Gothic Demi Cond but it is adjusted in photoshop. I took the EoD screenshot of the "He must be allowed to speak." line, wrote the line in PS using Franklin Gothic Demi Cond and then I manually adjusted it to fit the theatrical sub in the EoD screenshot. Photoshop then remembers the manual setting, so all the other subs should be the same adjusted font and therefore really close to the original. I tested it by making the "You weak-minded fool" sub and then putting it over the EoD screenshot of that line and it fit almost perfectly.

EDIT: Oh and yeah, I just used the timing of the hardcoded subs from the HD file.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

msycamore: Sorry, I'm not sure if I get what you really mean or what you're referring to, erri_wan could easily get an editable SRT-file from the DVD by simply demux it.

Are you sure about that? I'm quite sure that in order to work, subs on a DVD have to be rendered as bitmaps, so he could hardly just demux a SRT file from the DVD.

Wikipedia:

Subtitles are stored as bitmap images and therefore can contain messages in any language. Subtitles are restricted to four colors, including transparent "color", and thus tend to look cruder than permanent subtitles on film.[27] Transparency allows laying subtitles over the video during playback.[28] The subtitle tracks are contained within the VOB file of the DVD.

DVD Video may also contain closed captioning material which can only be viewed on a television set with a decoder.

That's not so easy. Selectable DVD subs cannot be saved as an editable text file. DVD subs are basically a video stream. There are programs that can convert them to a text file but it works on a text recognition principle, similarly to converting a scanned page into an editable text file.

As to the SRT only problem, there are free programs that convert between different subtitle formats, so it shouldn't be much of a problem to use whatever subs you have and then simply convert them.

PS: MSycamore, could you please check out my ROTJ DeEd thread and tell me what you think about the subs in my latest sample video?

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I just posted this over at the HTC Forum's SW on BD thread and I thought I'd share my thoughts about the probability of having a new transfer with you as well :-)

Coressel:

I can't imagine that the 90 second Blu-Ray promo includes the finished product. How many times does any kind of trailer for anything represent a finished product?

Harmy:

See these Jurassic Park and LOTR EE boxed sets trailers, both of them are showing off the new HD transfers:

It's like this: Most of the time when studios do make a brand new HD master, they usually just won't shut up about it in their campaign.

It would make absolutely no marketing sense to spend money on making a new transfer and keep it secret when pre-orders
are already up and the master used is being discussed all over the internet and is important for many people's decision whether
to buy the set or not.

If on the other hand they were recycling a flawed 8 years old master made for DVD, it would make a lot of sense to keep it a secret as long as possible, so that no one is sure about the transfer and a lot of people will pre-order it, because they still have some faith in the studio.

Well there is a little thing called copyright law...

Without a license, you can't show films to a group of over 5 people-especially in a public place. The only way to get around this is if you have specific permission from the copyright holder. The free screenings could be stopped if people high up really wanted them stopped.

Yeah, I know. I didn't say it was perfectly legal, I just said it was a different situation.

Exactly. I'm sure if they actually got permission, it'd have been granted, (although probably not for free) because from the sound of it, they'd would have been showing the shitty official versions in 1-6 order. But LFL had every right to stop them from doing it if they didn't ask for permission, because with free admission they would have made shitloads on drinks. The situation with the Boston showing was different as they definitely didn't make any profit from it.

I'm currently battling with the Jabba subtitles and I can't say I'm winning. There aren't really any technical problems, it's just slow and boring work. If someone wanted to help me and make all the subs into photoshop .PSD files, so they would already be in the correct position within a 1280x720 frame, it would seriously speed up my work.

Check out the scene I posted a screenshot of. In fact, here is a comparison... first GOUT, then SE then corrected SE best of all it's only 10MB!

Dunno, don't really like the washed out GOUT colours. And you can see the edge of where the blu starts. And mainly, it's not HD.

If on the other hand you could please do the Luke and 3P0 shot chroma swap for me in 720p, I would be very grateful. I can't seem to figure out how to do something like that in AE. And I guess if you can't do it in HD, anamorphic SD would do but HD would definitely be better.

That's interesting, I thought they should be on the bottom... why did you think they should be on the top?

From various sources such as theatrical bootlegs and puggo grande.

One question for you - whis is the main 720p GOUT you used, which is the main 97 SE you used? Thanks.

I only tried to be constuctive in my critisim, I am still very impressed by your version and I hope you didn't take it the wrong way (I certainly don't want that)!

No no, I'm glad you pointed these things out, thank you. It's hard to convey tone in writing sometimes.
