Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

The thing is that the GOUT is a bit to washed out and needs a bit of dark level boost (I haven't really seen that much of V3, so I don't know how dark it is, but if it's anything like Project Blu, I think DJ struck the darkness levels just right). And believe me, the official blu-rays are way worse in that aspect, as they're the same transfer as the 2004 DVDs, which had severely crushed blacks.

The earlier TPM shots must be taken from bad rips. This is suppose to be from the real BD and it looks kinda good me thinks. The pic with the kid has some excellent detail.

OK, those look awesome. I really hope this is what the whole transfer looks like and the others were just a bad rip.

Oh, and this:

In a way, it works better that what LFL did, it makes him look intentionally creepy, while in the BD version, the creepiness seems quite unintentional.

No, he's apparently already unrared the files, as he's got the ISO file. I don't know what the problem could be. It is possible, however unlikely, that your laptop indeed can't burn DL-DVDs. You may want to try and burn on someone else's computer.

Here's a guide anyway:

@Spence: I'm glad to hear that, pal :-)

Yeah, I for one am more upset about this than about the OT changes, because we already have that transfer of OT in 1080p but the DVD transfer of TPM (used for the HDTV broadcasts) was really bad and I was hoping that we'd get a nice new transfer but if the new BD transfer has this level of DVNR, then the ugly old transfer is still preferable :-(

I'd probably recommend going with the 5.1 mix or the 93 mix. The way I understand it is that the 1980 mix is from an lesser source.

May I ask what is the point of upscaling it though? When you re-encode, you always loose some quality and your Blu-Ray or media player is capable of upscaling it as you go without any loss of quality due to yet another recompression.

Well, the are a few more things I'd like to Despecialize - some of the Hoth battle shots and Falcon coming to cloud city and some of these shots had really bad DVNR smearing on them in the GOUT, so Puggo's version should be much better for those.

Also, I recently learned that there is many more of those zoomed in cockpit shots, so I might try and do those too.

hey harmy,

love the latest clip.  i noticed that obi wans saber turns from a rather vibrant blue to a more lighter blue.  also vaders saber has a thick glow about it in the beginning and at times the glow isn't as present.

did you use different sources for the sabers at different times?

Yeah, I used the 97SE for some shots and GOUT for others. But it was all an incredible amount of work and the colours of the sabres were not perfectly consistent in the original, so I think I'll leave it this way (except for the overall colour correction in this scene, I'll be making some changes there for the final version).
