It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P

your question goes with my earlier suggestion that if lucas insists the films were 'rough cuts' the oscars and nominations should be vacated.  and all box office grosses start from 1997 onward.

Not even that, the 1997 version was apparently also only a 'rough cut' and so was the DVD version, so they should only count the Blu-Rays.

Most of all though, this can't just be about Blu-Ray, because as other formats come, we need to stress the need for a release of it in all future formats.

Actually, I disagree here.  Once a (35mm, 24fps) movie has a good Blu-Ray release, it's effectively preserved for posterity.  Sure there are plenty of screwups with DNR and cyan/teal and all that, but assuming a PROPER transfer were done... that's it.  I'm happy.  Forever.

Agreed, I'd only add that IMO a movie can be considered preserved if there is a decent lossless master. Blu-Ray itself  still has compression artefacts, which would probably show on a really big screen. I really don't think more resolution than 1080p is necessary (though it is welcome) but lossless is. So what I'm saying is yes, a movie is effectively preserved once properly released on BD, but only provided the lossless master made for the BD release is kept.

And that's part of what needs to be straightened out too.  Lucas has successfully painted Star Wars fans as impossible to please.  We need to illustrate that it's actually just the opposite.  There's a movie out there called "Ernest Scared Stupid".  It probably has fans.  But those fans don't plaster the Internet with rage because you can get that movie on Blu Ray, and it's the exact same movie they would have seen in the theatre.  They are satisfied.  Star Wars fans are no harder to please than any other group of fans.  They are just more dissatisfied than any other group of fans because the expectations they have--those same really easy-to-meet expectations all fans of all movies have--have been frustrated for well over a decade now.  Fans of Star Wars envy fans of Ernest Scared Stupid.

Totally true. Also films like the Alien movies, Close Encounters, Blade Runner, Terminator films and others, all have different versions included in the same BD boxset, so like you say, we are not hard to please at all, we just want what is commonplace for fans of other franchises.

Collaborative Fanediting: An ROTJ Proposition (BACK ON TRACK WITH EMANSWFAN AT THE HELM--SEE POST 1488 OR OP FOR A LINK!)

Yeah, I don't think Lando should die in the final battle, I think Han should, Lando should die during the Sarlacc sequence. My idea (that just came to me) is this: They plant the explosives in the shield generator but they don't go off. If they don't blow up the shield, the fleet would be destroyed and everyone would die, so Han sacrifices himself and detonates the bomb manually. This could coincide with Luke hiding in the shadows refusing to fight Vader, and Luke could feel Han dying and it could be the trigger that makes him go after Vader, thus eliminating the need for Vader to talk about Luke's sister and thus enabling the removal of the whole stupid sister subplot.

But I understand it's probably pretty late now and it would also be hard to pull off (though not impossible).

GOUT. It's just the best option that I've got ready access to. Besides, I've got little or no use for fan edits and such nonsense.

2001/2002/2005 DVD's. The choices are limited here.

The choices are only limited if you allow yourself to be limited by blindly condemning fan efforts. For example this:

The Phantom Menace -Theatrical Version - NTSC DVD- ADYWAN

It was created by a fan, yes, but it is a perfect theatrical presentation on DVD including the original DD 5.1 from Laserdics, which is said to be vastly superior to the DVD mix. Even the PQ is better, because it is sourced from HD broadcast and colour corrected to be closer to theatrical colours than the official DVD.

My Despecialized Editions (links in my sig) are similar to this, although some of the less obvious changes (only those that you probably wouldn't ever notice) are left in.

Oh, and ROTS is the theatrical cut on BD.

What do you LIKE about the EU?

I must agree. It was completely forgettable, I read it once, a few years ago and don't remember anything about it at all. The witches of Danthomir don't even ring any bells with me, all I can recall after trying hard  is that there was some prince or something and he wanted to marry Leia. I could retell the basic plots of all the Zahn books, I remember some plotpoints even of the horrible Jedi Academy trilogy (which I read a good few years before this) but absolutely nothing of this one.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

I'm currently waiting to see how the whole thing goes with the SOPA and AKTA things before I start uploading anything. To be honest, the fact that they shut down MU like that scares me a little bit. At the moment, there are some well seeded (or so I'm told) public tracker torrents (not uploaded by me), so anyone who does a Google search can find them there.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

There will definitely be a version 2 of ESB and ROTJ (well, I'm definitely planning to make them anyway). I just watched ROTJ the other day and while yes, I'm quite happy with most of the despecializations, the compression artefact are really ugly and of course the BD source should help get rid of the crushed blacks. And yes, the slowed down shots will definitely need a redo (btw. it was You_Too, not me, who slowed down the shot of Han before he shoots). I'm also not too happy with Sebastian Shaw's eyebrows restoration, there a distracting shake. Though I'm not quite sure I'll be able to fix that, maybe someone more skilled than me (or with better software) could stabilize both the original and the SE footage to be perfectly still and then I could just add the original camera movement back. And I may give the Rancor another shot.

In ESB, a lot more of those cropped cockpit shots were discovered later, so I'd like to unzoom those. Also, with Puggo Strikes Back, I might be able to put back some of the Hoth battle shots and Falcon approaching Cloud City shots that were recomped, which I didn't put back before because I didn't have a good enough source. And again, with the BD source, the crushed blacks could be fixed.
