This is all I wanted. I'm happy, no need for another OOT release EVER for me!

With non-anamorphic letterboxing on a widescreen display, I could at least see 100% of the sides, and the crawl would appear properly. As things now stand, till money rolls in like rain, I'm reduced to watching my new DVD on my computer display, while my useless 40" TV screen sits blank in the background.

Grrr.

You get overscan on anamorphic movies though, for 16x9 tvs unless you're using a projector. That's where a DVD player with XY scaling comes in handy or step by step zoom. I think Malata makes a model that does XY scaling still. My Momitsu does both, but it's finicky on DVD-Rs sometimes, especially DVD9s, even retail ones.

Idea: Miramax Kung Fu Re-Edits?

Tai Seng are lazy as all hell merely repackaging the same DVDs from Asia without any work. And they edit entire 26 episode series down to about 3 hours because they think we're too dumb to get involved in the series. Not every Asian can read Chinese or read it. yet I love TVB series and want them subbed. They are only hurting themselves by mistreating these films and tv series.

Well, certain Hong Kong releases are definitly better. I myself am a little dissapointed in the Fortune Star set of Chinese Ghost Story as it shows a lot of grain. If you want to de a restoration of Fist of legend, you will need the Laser Disc, since it has a Mandarin track and the proper Cantonese track (in which the Japanese speak japanese, the English speack English, etc) I do happen to have that from Tai Seng, for some readon, the LD is gold. I have no idea if that makes it better or not. The LD is also uncut.

George Lucas can learn a thing or too about film restoration from Celestial who is doing over 700 Shaw films:

After:

There are cerrain movies that are still not right. For instance Drunken master II -- even the Taiwanese DVD, is not correct. The aspect ratio is wrrong, but it IS uncut. For the proper asspect ratio, you once again have to go to the LD. Oupon a Time in China and America I believe was releaed also in the wrong aspect ratio.

It's a hard battle when the Asian studios are almost as bad. The deluxe R3 Bruce Lee Boxset has a re-dubbed Big Boss, with added Kyaas and Pink Floyd incidental music that were not in the older releases. The Game of Death 2 DVD is English only, odd considering I still have the original Chinese Tower of Death with Cantonese audio. My older copy of Fist of Fury has an extensice audio commentary by Bey Logan on it which is absent in the newly remastered one. I for one am not too fond of the addition of a DTS track to something as old as these.

The Killer and Hard Boiled are still out of print in the US and both of those had great audio commentaries by John Woo. Both those movies are still in print in asia in anamorphic prints which were not the case here in the US. They were letterboxed.

So yeah, I think there are indeed many projects that can be undertaken.

Most typically the joint affected is that of the big toe, but gout can also affect the ankle, knee, foot, hand, wrist and elbow. Uric acid crystals may also form deposits in other areas such as under the skin or in other soft tissues, and in the kidney or urinary tract.

You might want to rethink that.

I get that from time to time, and I think Laserman was referring to the upcoming official release. so I thing GOUT suits the upcoming release good.

That is an awesome cover. When will we be seeing this for download?

I'll probably be seeding this again when I get back to work at the end of the week. I have a T1 there so my uploads can be pretty good. But we have a firewall so I can't connect to everybody at once, but the few that I do connectto will get good speed.

Okay, I found a non-anamorphic, letterbox DVD (and it was a 2001 Fox release too, imagine that *yawn*). The movie was shot in 2.35:1 so it was a great comparison. In my component mode, it keeps it letterboxed and it does NOT scale it any bigger to fill more of the screen. But since I have a DVD/VCR combo I could actually switch to the AV mode and still play/watch the DVD, and in that mode I can select the "Zoom" options to fill more of the screen. Quite honestly, I didn't really notice much difference in picture quality and I was satisfied with viewing the movie in that mode.

So yeah, I am still on the fence about getting the 09/12 DVDs but feeling *slightly* better about it all. I still don't know what is going through Lucas'/LFL's head, though. Maybe they figure with the technology out there today they can take the easy route, as most (all?) widescreen TVs, DVD players, etc., have a zoom feature. No excuse, though, no excuse...

I recently checked out my non-anamorphic copy of The Abyss. It's a great looking transfer, without a doubt. Even zoomed up. But after looking at the upcoming DVDs, I'm glad that I have Moth3r's and Dr. M's transfers.

Dual Layered. At least they didn't skimp on that. Here are my screencaps of Empire, for reference with some other edits.. Top is offical DVD, middle is Editdroid, and last is Dr M's rcode of Moth3r's.

And to see just how much blue we do have in the LDs which to me were fine levels:

Back on topic, the only time i don't zoom in on letterboxed material is if it does, indeed cut off so much of the subtitles that they are unreadable. (on the starwars laserdiscs, it cuts off the bottom portion of the letters, but enough is visible that you can still read it, even if you don't have the lines memorized by now...)

Hmm, I didn't even think about that one. I am wondering if they will put the subtitles in the actual picture (you know, exactly where the "original theatrical version" would have them *ahem*) or down in the black like they did with many of the versions.

Can somebody who's seen the DVDs confirm for me where the subtitles are located?

They are soft subtitles, so they are not directly on the film. So for me when I zoomed in the pic to fill my screen, I lose the subs for the alien languages. Even with the XY scaling of my Momitsu.

Of course, the subtitles for the LD were hard subbed. So I guess the masters did not have subtitles burned into them.

Info Wanted: Do I Have The Best OT Preservation DVDs out there?

Hmm, Editdroid is good, not my favorite, but as far as letterboxed transer it is most similar to the official release:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/Harlock415/Misc/STAR_WARS-1-42-28A.jpg
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/Harlock415/Misc/STAR_WARS-1-42-28B.jpg

Editdroid's is a little more washed out in color I've noticed. For Star Wars anyway, but not fot Empire or Jedi.

I really like what Citizen has done with ANH, but I only have the Xvid version which I have converted to DVD9 and looks great. Haven't gotten Empire yet and it appears Jedi may never see the light of day, unfortunately.

I like OCP's Classic version a lot, but some of the LD footage sometimes stands out a little too much compared to the 04 DVD. ANH isn't completeley SE free, maybe 95-99%. But there is a difference in color balance between the OCP and the 04 DVD's and I prefer OCP's color coorections/balance as opposed tothe Crayola job done originally.

But for LD transfer, I would say that the ones done by Moth3r's for PAL and Dr M for NTSC are the best out there.

When the camera is steady you can see the pattern in the sand but when it moves to the left the

I'll have to check on the crawl with Empire of Dreams later.
