Well I expected worse. But the 04 covers were by far worse. These are an improvement for sure. I don't particularly care for them for various reasons, BUt I guess after seeing all the fine covers on this site, I may be spoiled.

Coov, we await your covers with baited breath.

Well, I'd like to counter Neil's unnamed sources with one that's definitely come through in the past:

We all remember Darth First, correct? That's the username of the person who essentially leaked any and all details about the 2004 set in August of that year, long before anyone knew what was really going on. Darth First pretty obviously has some kind of position inside the DVD industry as he got his copies around that August.

Darth First has stated they are NOT using the D2 masters, and are sourcing from film elements to make this DVD

Take from that what you will. He does say that's what he's heard from his people, but First has proved pretty reliable at this. He COULD be misled by these "sources" however, just as Neil's sources could be RIGHT. But still, thought I'd throw that out there, if only to muddy the waters even more

But now there's a proven source of DVD news stating that these DVD's are being sourced from film elements, not Laserdisc masters.

This goes back to what I heard about the films being brought in for washing at a lab sometime last year. I've since confirmed that my friend personally saw canisters for Empire and some of Jedi while working there. Real deals and not Special Editions.

The question I have is if the print is the Defenitive Collection/Faces master, or if it is the '97 SE prints before they did the changes. If its a '97 pre-SE print, it could be pretty good. If it is the DE/Faces, it won't be much better than what we have from Laserdisc.

Actually according to my friend who works at that lab, they are the originals. And they were done after the 04 releases, and less than a year ago

The other thing to remember is that LD quality was the shit until HD TV came along. Also, the LDs were from Digital masters if I recall when they were first cleaned up back in the mid 90's. So the quity of the masters when transfered to DVD should be better than the LDs. But this is early speculation so far. I know for a fact about the film cleaning so it may be a new transfer from a clean telecine for all we know.

It's hard to say. I know that my friend's lab actually washed the trilogy a few months ago for LFL. And I don't think the 04 versions exist on film. So either her lab washed the SE's or Theatrical Versions.

We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD

according to Jim Ward, so it could be possible they dug up some preserved print. Otherwise the D2 masters would be only slightly better than the LD resolution. I have my hopes up, but I'm also prepared to have my heart broken. Spoken like an SF Giants fan.

It will be due to pressure from the fans and the company, or his eventual death. But doing it for the money? No. Lucas has stated many times that he would actually loose money if he put it out on DVD (which is bull, but then again Lucas likes to make up crazy crap all the time.)

What the hell is Lucas smoking? I know it doesn't cost that much to release movies on DVD. If anything movies that have died in the box office have actually made more money on DVD mainly because of the turnaround. What he is thinking s that all the marketing cost and hype of releasing the O-OT would make him lose money. But the acual cost of makeing the discs should be nil. And we know he has nice clean versions of the O-OT without the additions. Not everything they release on DVD has to have a huge marketing push. A modest one will get the news out. Lucas if you release it we will buy. And tha's the bottom line.

Somethinng Wicked This Way Comes.

The DVD from buena Wista, which I haven't ordeed is anamorphic widescreen, but apparently the Laser Disc version has a commentary track by ray Bradbury on one analog channel and an isolated score by James Horner on another analog Channel. I would love to see this incorporated into a special edition DVD as well as the documentary on the making of the movie which was broadcast in 1983.

=D

I hardly even knew there WAS a Special Edition Hype cover. Is that the landscape one? Only one I've seen. Also, is there a cover anywhere for the Auditions specifically for my release rather than Rikter's?

Anyway.

Gladdens my heart. You guys are doing all these fan edits much justice with packaging. If only convention bootleggers would do the same.

But, uh, Daveytod ... "Return ON the Ewok?"

Is that the porn version?

That indeed is the Landscape of Special Edition Hype. I can't remember where the casting audition cover came from actually.
