The Nihilism Thread
Time

Any meaning that you or I find in life is unique and meaningful only to you or I. Whatever meaning I gleam from something is something I’ve attributed to it, not something in it that I’ve discovered. Any good thing that I do and that other people find meaningful is something that is meaningful because it touched other people in an apparently beneficial way rather than it being some deed of cosmic significance.

This doesn’t sound like nihilism to me. This may seem like an odd question, but your wording prompts it. Were you by chance raised in a religious household?

James Gunn defended her firing as well.

Here’s his response to his controversy.

  1. Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.

    2. It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.

    4. For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it.

    5. Anyway, that’s the completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don’t anymore. I don’t blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all.

I read another thing, that this violates some kind of contract he’s signed. The details, of course, we wouldn’t know. There’s the possibility they weren’t actively aware of it, or brushed it off in the hopes no one would notice. They let Lasseter go recently as well (a whole other can of worms), sending the signal that no matter what you’ve done, your job isn’t safe.

Well, that’s ridiculous. The obscene tweets were just bad jokes meant to shock you for views, made nearly a decade ago (Geez, Twitter’s been around for awhile…). He shouldn’t have lost his job, given he’s responsible for the best movies the MCU has produced, and is very clearly a different man now.

As long as we condemn everyone who’s done or said something questionable in all the time they’ve been around, there’ll be no one left in Hollywood. No one is infallible.

Last movie seen
Time

The Parallax View (1974) - Tightly wound pacing and paranoid cinematography pair fittingly with a simple, but engrossing central plot. I’m a sucker for a good conspiracy thriller, and I have to say this is one of the best. A-

Fantastic film! One of my all-time favorites.

What I’ve seen:

Ant-Man and the Wasp - Ugh. I wish Michael Douglas had more time to develop the whole thing with his freaking wife, and at least two less underdeveloped villains wasting all that screentime.

Re: Infinity War, who’s to say no one will die? Quick, someone take a look at the original four heroes’ contracts.

The Last Detail - Been a fan of the other Hal Ashby flicks I’ve seen, and, although not as polished, the way this film lingers and lounges about on every little thing is pretty moving. Early Jack Nicholson is a plus. Seek it out.

If you drop the unfunny humour and re-edit the unfinished ending, STV can be pretty good. It has some wonderful character moments - the campfire sequences and the scene where Sybok tries to “heal” Spock, McCoy and Kirk belong to my favourite scenes of all of the movies

Agreed. Those scenes are some of the best moments from the original movies. But then there some things so stupid I can hardly fathom their existence.

After stringing me along as an intern and then a temp for two years, the lab where I work finally gave me a real job with benefits today. Now, I’m actually currently in the process of applying to grad school and will be quitting in five months and moving to New York if I get in, but I’ll happily take the pay bump and the optical insurance in the meantime.

Woohoo! But this proves a few theories of mine, lmao.

Has Star Wars finally "jumped the shark"?
Time

The masses spend a lot of their time picking their nose. They don’t put any critical thought into entertainment, so whether or not these movies are good or not, is almost irrelevant when evaluating how they feel about them. Solo underperformed, but we don’t really know if that’s due to Star Wars fatigue, or because it wasn’t a saga film. We’ll have a clearer picture when Ep. IX comes out.
