Iron Man was the first comic I ever collected, so I'm pretty excited about this. I was worried it might just be another crappy Marvel adaptation but with Jon Favreau directing, this could be great.

From the Marvel website:

At the San Diego Comic Con this past weekend, director/actor/writer Jon Favreau, who is set to helm the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of Iron Man, announced who Shellhead's nemesis would be in the upcoming film.

Mr. Favreau of Swingers and Made fame, named fan-favorite and long-standing Iron Man archenemy Mandarin as the villain who will be the rust in Tony Stark's armor.

Additionally, we have a sneak peak of the teaser poster that was shown at the convention. Designed by Iron Man artist Adi Granov—a major player in the production design of this film—this poster gives a glimpse as to what Stark could look like when he eventually dons the red and gold suit in May of 2008.

This project, the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment, is expected to be financed through Marvel's $525 million revolving film financing facility and distributed under Marvel's overall distribution arrangement with Paramount. Iron Man will mark the first production under Mr. Arad's newly launched production company, Avi Arad Productions.

Storyboarding has already commenced. Favreau had stated that he intended to cast an unknown in the role of Anthony Stark a.k.a Iron Man, though rumors are gaining momentum. Favreau has also said that the plot itself will not so much deal with his personal problems (alcoholism) as much as the creation of his suit and the birth of Iron Man. However, he did say if there would be a sequel, the story could easily head in some of those directions.

Keep your eye-beams on the look out for more news on this metal-head movie.

You know what? I never watched the Animated Series. Well, I did see one episode with Clayface, but I basically scorned the whole thing because I didn't like the way it was drawn as a child (I didn't like the jawlines, mostly). Now I feel like I missed out on so much...

Seriously. You did. Do yourself a favor and buy or rent the season sets- start at the start as it were. I think if you can get past the jawlines you'll be excellently surprised. Best non-comic book adaptation of Batman IMHO.

I second that.

Its strange... Tom Cruise went from hot A-lister to insane scientology-brainwashed metrosexual pariah by jumping on a couch over Katie Holmes. what the heck????

And by calling the Psychology and Psychiatry professions false. I quote Tom:

"There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance."

"When you talk about emotional, chemical imbalances in people, there is no science behind that."

"People go for help, but their lives don't get better because of those [psychiatric] drugs. They get worse. They feel numb and they're told that's a good thing. It's how you degrade a society -- by drugging the piss out of it."

Then by trying to publicly make Matt Lauer out to be a dipshit for believing in that whole medical farce of Psychiatry and Psychology:

"You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do." (This is from a High School Dropout?!?!?!?!)

Then by publicly bashing Brooke Shields for actually talking about postpartum depression with shit like:

"The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation, okay. And she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She-- she doesn't understand in the same way that you don't understand it."

"Here is a woman - and I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is incredibly talented - (but) you look at where has her career gone?"

"Well, you look at people. Look - is she happy? Is she really happy?"

Tom has done much more to effect career suicide than just overselling his love with Katie. He calls the entire medical profession of helping people's screwed-up minds a crock, and anywhere, especially in Hollywood, that dog just won't hunt.

I loved Brooke Shields come back to all that - "I think Tom Cruise should stick to fighting aliens and let women who are dealing with post partum depression deal with it however they see fit."

Don't ever pick a fight with Brooke Shields, especially when Brooke is taller than you.

And don't alienate women when women make up a huge part of your fanbase.

Well, the Burton movies screwed continuity over royally, what with making the Joker the Wayne-murderer and all. Making Dent run for mayor is pretty much par for the course with Burton.

I read that originally Harvey Dent was supposed to be the villain of "Batman Returns", manipulating the Penguin, sending Selina falling to the "death" that turned her into Catwoman, etc. That would have kind of undermined the tragedy of the good man turned bad though.

I hope they do Dent justice in "Dark Knight".

I'd like to think they wouldn't make the same mistake twice. I'd have rather seen them build up a friendship between Bruce Wayne/Batman and Dent instead of wasting time on another throwaway girlfriend.

I'm pretty sure that's what they're doing with this one, is having Harvey Dent move in as the new D.A. I wish they hadn't wasted the whole Falcone storyline on the first one, though - because they need the Long Halloween storyline up their sleeve to do a good Two-Face origin story. Then again, Carmine ain't dead yet, so it's always a possibility.

Personally I think Dent should have appeared in "Begins".

Meanwhile, Daniel Radcliffe will be cast as James Bond in about 20 years, when they decide to reboot the franchise after the awful flameout caused by the casting of Daniel Craig.

Radcliffe's going to need a growth spurt soon then, since most of the other Bonds were over 6-feet tall while Craig is only 5'11".

Maybe they'll have Emma Watson play Radcliffe's first Bond girl.

Where did the huge influx of retards come from?

The biggest troublemakers I've seen thus far have been BadAssKeith and JediRandy, among other asshats who simply reply with JPEGs insulting their threads and comments.

I don't really hang out in the General Star Wars forum because there just doesn't seem to be a lot of interesting Star Wars activity right now.

Hilton Phone Scandal
Time
From the IMDB pipeline 8/24/06 -

Paris Hilton has been caught up in a cell phone scandal in America after being named among 50 SpoofCard users who have had their accounts terminated. The socialite has been caught allegedly breaking into unauthorized voice mail boxes and changing what others see on their caller ID display when they receive a phone call. According to website TMZ.com, Hilton used her SpoofCard account to hack into voicemail accounts on a US national mobile telephone network. Among those who were the victims of the phone pranks included Hilton's party scene rival Lindsay Lohan. SpoofCard attorney Mark Del Bianco tells Tmz.com, "Paris was entering unauthorized mail boxes," adding, "A number of the 50 persons were making unauthorized entrances to Miss Lohan's voicemail." Lohan's publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, says, "I have turned this matter over to Lindsay's lawyers."

Shame on her.

Well, I didn't see MI:3 because of my growing dislike for Mr. Cruise.

I know what you mean. I was never really a Tom Cruise fan to begin with, but sometimes I'd sit through his films IF the film itself looked interesting. Now I can't watch his films at all, because all I can think of when I see him is the couch jumping, Scientology ranting and the Brooke Shields bashing.

Tom Cruise dumped by Paramount.
Time
Tom Cruise has been unceremoniously dumped by his Paramount studio partners for his sofa-jumping antics on TV. Revered Paramount boss Sumner Redstone has ended his company's 14-year relationship with Cruise/Wagner Productions because he no longer wants to be associated with the movie star. Redstone tells newspaper The Wall Street Journal he believes Cruise's bizarre antics on TV shows like Oprah and Today had a negative effect on the box office take of Paramount's 2005 summer blockbuster War Of The Worlds. He snipes, "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal... His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

All I can say is - serves him right.

Really? Everyone seems to hate Dan wherever I go and read comments/thoughts/reviews. Everyone else just loves/adores/worships Rupert Grint. There's been a bit of a backlash against Emma Watson though at the IMDB forum boards for "Goblet of Fire".

JKR said that Dumbeldore isn't pulling a Gandalf and that he is really died.

That's a shame.

The "Random Thoughts" Thread
Time
Well, the thread for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is gone, so having only just seen the film I'm gonna post my thoughts here in the Random Thought thread:

Sequels are a tricky business. It's so hard to live up to the first one, let alone surpass it. More often than not, sequels often just feel like vain imitations/remakes/rehashes of the films that spawned them as the same basic formula is usually just flogged to death (Rocky's 2-5 and Matrix's Reloaded/Revolution come to mind here). There are exceptions, such as "The Empire Strikes Back", but they are few and far between. For the most part I enjoyed "Dead Man's Chest" but I cannot deny that the original film was superior.

The biggest sin of "Dead Man's Chest" is that it runs too long and tries to over-stuff itself, cutting back & forth between Jack Sparrow's antics, the misfortunes of Will or the misfortunes of Elizabeth, which then leads us to the misfortunes of Norrington, with a lot of action thrown in, whereas the first film had a more focused, driven feel to it. I saw the film with my dad and he commented that it felt like they took a book, ripped out the most interesting/exciting parts and then pasted it together in no particular order. Most criminally, the storyline with Will catching up with the sea zombie version of his father Bootstrap Bill Turner (Stellan Skarsgard buried under tons of prosthetic makeup & CGI) is probably the most interesting storyline going in the movie, but it deserves more time than it ultimately gets. The decision to turn Norrington into a full blown evil bastard was unexpected - I know he wasn't exactly the hero of the first film, but he wasn't the villain either, just the romantic rival (I blame this on the fact that they cut scenes that were meant to establish him as a nicer guy). The thing with Elizabeth becoming infatuated with Jack, or at least appearing to become infatuated with him, was a relatively minor offense but still an annoying one. It felt like the writers were trying too hard to both play to the popularity of Depp/Jack and also to try and resurrect the opposites attract magic of Princess Leia & Han Solo, the primary difference being that Solo was taller, better looking, had better equipment and had better hygiene than Sparrow. That seemed to go against part of Elizabeth's realizations in the first film that pirates weren't all they were cracked up to be, and she struck me as being smarter than to fall for an obvious scoundrel like Jack. Or maybe I'm just over-reacting to their decision to put the young lovebirds fate in doubt. And there are some who will undoubtedly be annoyed by the cliff-hanger setting up "Pirates 3: The Pirate Version of the Search For Spock".

Okay, stuff I actually did like... there were some genuinely funny moments (some of which were overplayed), the action set pieces were well staged & well executed (if a little over the top), and the actors were generally good. Johnny Depp basically rehashes his performance from the first film, which works well enough since he still appears to be having fun as the drunken glam rocker pirate. Orlando Bloom is good in his usual low-key way (though he's basically got himself typecast as the earnest young hero and will probably spend the rest of his career being accused of just playing himself in every film he does).Nighy & Starsgard were good along with the rest of the undead crew, though they are basically a steroid fueled remake of the undead crew from "Curse". Keira Knightley was alright, though in a few scenes it felt like she was trying too hard (namely the ones where she's supposed to act like she's becoming infatuated with Jack). I guess I'm not being very positive here, am I? Well, if I make the film out to be worse than it actually is, I'm sorry. Just go in knowing that it's not as bad as the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Batman & Robin, Daredevil, Elektra, 2005 Fantastic Four and Catwoman.
