You become Lucas' advisor post-1999

After the negative critical reaction to The Phantom Menace, George Lucas loses confidence in his abilities and hires you as his chief creative consultant for the rest of the trilogy. George still has veto power, but he’ll basically do anything you want as long as you have a good reason.

Sounds like an interesting premise for a movie empire simulation videogame 😉

I’m already starting to see beyond the title … there are two eyes (the O’s), the L looks like a nose and the S looks like an ear or an ear with hair.

"Now...what shall we talk about?" The All-Inclusive Indiana Jones Thread
Time

My two cents

The order i saw the Indiana Jones movies had a strong impact on how i evaluate every movie in the series.

My first movie was The Last Crusade. It is (imo) the best Indiana Jones film of all time. Spielberg wasn’t interested doing another roller-coaster ride so he injected a charming & heart warming character drama into the story. It’s not about the grail - it’s about Father & Son who overcome their mutual enstrangement during the adventure. In terms of action & fantasy aspects it demands the least suspension of disbelief from the audience. Great cast, excellent set pieces. All in all a timeless action-adventure movie. Everything Raiders did, this movie does better by far - yes, i said that and i mean it! Some might argue that The Last Crusade is just a mere rehash of Raiders. But don’t forget: Spielberg & Lucas went back to the Raiders formula, because of the harsh reception that Temple of Doom recieved.

Raiders was second in my viewing order. Yes it is a great movie, but strangely this movie does not age very well for me. Everytime i watch it, i see new cracks in its patina.

Temple of Doom was third in my viewing order. It is childish, giggly and feels more like Quatermain movie. Indy is completely out of character and he acts often like a douche in the first half of the film. A fun 80s flick which undoubtely can stand on it’s own, if you erase The Last Crusade and Raiders from your mind.

Kingdom of the Cyrstal Skull … my fourth Indy movie. In the cinema i had a blast watching it. Instantly i thought: better than Temple of Doom. But with every subsequent viewing that movie gradually went down into oblivion. Lazy direction, lame-ass production values, underdeveloped MacGuffin, etc.

The Indiana Jones series (i hate calling it a franchise) belongs to the 80s. Every Indy aspect outside of that era sucked. I don’t want a fifth Indy movie. Ford is too OLD!

Cherish the ride into the sunset…

I just hate all the damn speculating. I wish Disney would give some kind of damn statement.

They already did. Kathleen Kennedy already said it’s not going to happen. Just a bunch of people who can’t take a hint and like to bury their heads in the sand.

I didn’t hear that, but heartbreaking as it is, it’s not surprising.

I just can’t see the OOT ever getting released on its own. As a 2nd disc feature, maybe.

IF the OOT was restored correctly, and I mean 100% correctly, […]

This will be an issue, if Disney is going to restore the OOT: What IS 100% correctly?

No matter how good, precise or accurate they could do it, there will be a certain amount of people who will shout out loud how wrong, imprecise or inaccurate their restoration is. They can’t please everyone because too much time has passed. Opinions on how the restoration should look & sound like are diverging day by day.

Predicted assumption: Indiana Jones 4 will be a disappointment

Quote by user Rebel Scumb:

“Personally I think we’ve all been spared a sequel that would almost certainly have embarrassed the franchise. Sure I would of lined up opening night to see it, but I can almost guarntee the Indy magic would be long gone, and instead we’d be treated to a lot jokes about Ford’s age, a plethora of CGI, and a lot of santized PG violence, and PC values.”

Date of quote: 17 February 2004 — 4 years prior to the actual movie

Icky Sex in Star Wars (AKA Holy ****: The Thread)

This thread is truly bizarre … but hey, even Star Wars has some slightly abnormal sexual things going on. Undeniable there is a certain amount of “tentacle stuff” in Star Wars:

Let the metaphor speak for itself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tentacle_erotica

Another example: due to her handcuffed position Mr. Plinkett suspected in his AOTC review that the Tuskens did some more things with Shmi Skywalker than just torturing:

It bothers me that there’s nothing from ROTJ on that poster. Surely Slave I couldve been replaced with something specific to the third film.

Is the TFA Star Destroyer not good enough for you?

They had one job 😉

And the Vader/Death Star shape seems to be a nearly identical copy/paste image from the Rogue One DVD Cover.

How you pictured Anakin pre-PT

How you pictured Anakin pre-PT

As a noble & likeable man with extraordinary pilot skills. He has enthusiastic ideals about peace, right and order. With the help of his new friend, the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin becomes a Jedi. He hopes to end the Clone Wars which disrupts the republic for quite some years now. Over the past years of the war the republic is close to a downfall. In time pressure Anakin starts looking for faster and more effective ways to end the war. During a crucial key moment that involves a Senator named Palpatine, Anakin tastes & uses the Dark Side of the Force. With the power of the Dark Side he finally achieves what the Jedi failed to do: Anakin ends the long-lasting Clone Wars. Eventually Anakin refuses to give up the Dark Side of the Force which ignites the extinction of the Jedi, the rise of the Empire and a certain duel with his former friend Obi-Wan Kenobi.

As a child i always assumed that Anakin was the first Jedi ever, who defected to the Dark Side. Despite being a Sith he still uses the typical Jedi weapon: a Lightsaber with the unusual color red.

Are The Prequels That Bad?
Time

Anyone heard about the abruptly discontinued blog by J.W. Rinzler called ‘The Rise and Fall of Star Wars’?

The last blog entry dealt with some of the actors concerns towards the Prequels:

Back on set, whenever George asked Jimmy Smits (Bail Organa) to modify his performance or alter an action, Smits would reply, “Yes, sir.” Often when George asked Christensen or McGregor, they would reply, “Yeah, yeah, yeah.”
They weren’t disrespectful, but they weren’t necessarily buying it either. They were going along with it.
Back on the Original Trilogy, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) had understood instinctively where Lucas was coming from, though he was famously uncommunicative. It was nothing personal. As many know, “Faster” and/or “More intense,” was what Lucas often requested of his actors.
Part of his general reticence on any set was due to the fact that he simply didn’t want to be there. Lucas had told Roger Christian back in 1976, set decorator on Star Wars, that each day he woke up with a metaphorical sack of large stones on his back and spent the day struggling to remove them, painfully, one by one. On set for Episode III, I overheard George asking himself one morning, “Why am I putting myself through this again?”
In 1978, three crewmembers got into a post-film analysis of their ex-boss, concluding that he took too much on himself and stressed himself out unnecessarily. They also thought he often put his trust in the wrong people. I’ve read similar complaints about similar visionaries. Evidently, when you’re hounded by success, it often becomes difficult to tell who has your best interests at heart, particularly given that many folks may have already told you things that didn’t turn out to be true, or said that something wouldn’t work that did turn out to work, and vice versa, etc., etc. It’s a difficult position to be in.
Despite his directorial shorthand and his on-set suffering, Lucas, Ford, Fisher, and Hamill worked well together on the Original Trilogy and remained friends afterward. Lucas seemed particularly close with Fisher.
It didn’t help that Portman and McGregor had been wounded by negative reviews of the first two prequels, making this last one harder for them. In fact when I was given the greenlight to talk to McGregor on set, I went over to introduce myself and before I’d said two words, he shouted in a loud and annoyed voice, “Well, I’ll just let you know then!”
It was a tad awkward. Crew would tell me that on Episode I McGregor had been enthusiastic and kind, helping to move chairs for the next setup. But he’d changed. Rick told me that the actor was frustrated, and on an “emotional rollercoaster.”
He and Portman were never ready to be interviewed (instead I relied on EPKs).”

J. W. Rinzler altered his article, which now says: “It didn’t help that Portman and McGregor may have been wounded by negative reviews of the first two prequels, making this last one harder for them.”

He removed the anecdotes about McGregor’s behavior, and softened another part where he describes Christensen expressing his lack of understanding of Lucas’ vision of Anakin at one point.

Source: https://naboonews.wordpress.com/2017/07/14/natalie-portman-and-ewan-mcgregor-were-reportedly-wounded-by-episodes-i-and-ii-reviews/

So, who stopped Rinzler blogging about those interesting Prequel BTS conditions? Kathleen Kennedy or maybe Lucas himself? Apparently Rinzlers blog was supposed to end with the production conditions surrounding TFA.
