40 at 40: Interviews from the 40th anniversary reunion on May 27th, 2017
Time

Thanks for sharing Adywan! Never saw/heard Marcia Lucas speaking for herself. She is truly amazing. Her saying about her ex-husband sounds fair & polite. Lucas on the contrary is always very embittered when he talks about the divorce together with almost preventing to mention any Marcia-related contribution to Star Wars (she’s barely mentioned in the ‘Empire of Dreams’ documentary for example). Subtly she also debunked the myth Lucas had to raise Amanda alone. She had a 50% time share of her daughter, and raised her with George, even though they were divorced.

Just a question: is it possible to merge this thread with Tobars thread…

…so that we can keep the 40th Reunion stuff together?

[…] I was actually softening a little in my heart on my stance against the prequels. I was even vaguely considering watching them again at some point.

Oh boy, the “giving-the-Prequels-one-more-chance” thing. That comes in my mind from time to time too. I have not seen the Prequels for quite a while now in order to forget them as good as possible. But on the other hand, i’m saying to myself: Hey, they can’t be that bad? Let’s rewatch them completely open-minded. I did this two times in the past … but those movies are not getting better

I will never understand the attitude that a new movie can ruin an older movie.

I experienced this issue with the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy. For example, in ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ Saruman says to Gandalf:

You know of what I speak, Gandalf: a great Eye, lidless, wreathed in flame.

This sentence (and the scene) was perfectly fine before i saw the Hobbit trilogy.

Then in ‘Desolation of Smaug’, Gandalf sees Sauron when he changes his appearance to the lidless, fiery eye. That sentence in ‘Fellowship’ is now (retcon-wise) a backward reference to the scene in ‘Desolation’. Everytime i see now ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ (my favourite LOTR movie btw), i will be remembered that there is this other ‘mediocre’ Middleearth trilogy i don’t really like. It doesn’t ruin ‘Fellowship’, but it annoys me being reminded about the Hobbit trilogy in that scene.

I fear something could happen when i see the Han Solo movie. What will happen to my memories about to Han’s and Landos first meeting in ESB? Can i still enjoy the scene in Cloud City or will i be reminded about stupid stuff from the Han Solo movie? You know, we will see how Lando will lose the Falcon fair & square to Han or something like that. I don’t want to know how that happened.

Do you have a source for this eight year thing?

Hm, i’m sure i read somewhere that it would be an eight year gap between Vol.2 & Vol.3, but unfortunately i cannot find the source now.

James Gunn confirms on his twitter Account that Vol.3 takes place after Avengers 3&4:
https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/859481902868185088

Comingsoon.net hints in one of his articles that Vol.3 takes place years after Vol.2 (second article, scroll down): http://www.comingsoon.net/movie/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3

But maybe i confused some infos due to this article, where Kevin Feige mentioned that between Vol.2 & Infinity War will be a four year gap:
http://www.cinemablend.com/news/1650709/why-the-guardians-will-be-different-when-introduced-in-avengers-infinity-war-according-to-kevin-feige

If so, i’m sorry.

And that’s the reason why the GOTG movies stick out of the MCU - they work very good on their own without the necessity of watching/knowing the other ‘standard’ MCU superhero movies. I dare you, try to watch Captain America 3: Civil War without knowing the precursor movies. James Gunn is aware of that. Is it a coincidence that the third GOTG movie is supposed to take place approximately eight years after the Infinity War? Guess not - Gunn wants to keep the GOTG to be detached to a certain point of view within the MCU.

Let’s examine this shall we?

I dare you, try to watch Captain America 3: Civil War without knowing the precursor movies.

It’s the third Captain America film.

No, it’s not. It is basically The Avengers 2.5: The Apology for Age of Ultron. It wouldn’t be that much of a problem, if the movie would feature just Cap as the main character, hence the title CAPTAIN AMERICA. But it doesn’t - the movie acts like an Avengers movie due to the ensemble characters … too many ensemble characters. Even you stick just the Cap movies, with Civil War the viewers face serious problems to follow/understand what’s going on. The gap between Winter Soldier and Civil War is too big because of the interconnected incidents of other MCU movies.

If Gunn is trying to avoid the repercussions of his heroes mingling with the greater MCU then why didn’t he set Vol. 3 before Infinity War?

My guess is, Gunn sets GOTG3 eight years after Infinity War, because the incidents of that movie will be probably be dealt with - mentally & personally for the GOTG ensemble. Gunn won’t have to make to make a big deal out of it. Maybe the GOTG characters will mention the Infinity War in one or two scences. The most important thing: with the eight year time gap, Infinity War is out of the way and Gunn can focus on the third story he wants to tell for the GOTG ensemble. And mark my words: none of the Avengers guys will have a supporting role or impact in that movie.

I think we’ll get a restored OOT on Blu Ray before we ever get a true unvarnished account of what went on behind the scenes on this film.

And Guardians Of The Galaxy is the exception to any perceived Marvel “formula”. If anything, it’s success allowed James Gunn more freedom with the sequel.

George isn’t going to last forever, and while Kathleen Kennedy owes him her entire career and is forever in his pocket, she’s probably going to be gone too with time. What she must have like 50 years left in her? Have some patience, jeez. Set your clocks for 2070 you guys, that’s the date. You just gotta wait, it’s definitely coming. They’re just holding out on us for the 80th anniversary. Maybe the 100th. I can’t believe anyone would think it won’t ever happen.

yeah, theoretically by the 100th anniversary the copyright will have expired and it’ll be public domain. Then there will be dozens of different releases. Too bad half of us will be dead by then.

Not necessarily. Let’s this rename this forum to cryosleep.com. Instead of creating Star Wars Fan preservations we should focus on technics & mechanics to expand our lifes so that we can experience the 100th anniversary of Star Wars 😉
