Unless knowledge of how to use the force transferred to her from her mind link with Kylo, the simple fact that she on her own thought to use the Jedi mind trick needs some sort of explanation…unless I am forgetting something.

I suspect that Kylo UNLOCKED her force powers during the interrogation scene. Her force powers were sealed by someone who left her behind on Jakku. A planet so remote that even old Luke Skywalker admitted that Jakku is pretty much nowhere. But who was it? My guess: it was Reys mother. When Snoke was actively looking for young untrained force users, Reys mother hid her on Jakku never to be found by Snoke. Snokes search was successful though: he found Ben Solo.

I’m really hoping we will see Reys mother.

I liked Luke’s vibe in TLJ in theory, but the execution bugged me somewhat. Luke in exile was great. Luke reconsidering past events and pondering (as I have as a fan) the idea of Jedi hubris was great. Luke suggesting that the old Jedi orthodoxy had to die was great. This could have been his way of forcing Rey to take her destiny into her own hands, a new and different path away from the usual formalised Jedi training routine. Once Rey had flown off to confront Kylo, Luke could have revealed his cunning duplicity to Yoda and they could’ve burned down the Jedi tree together. Then, after Luke’s great skype-battle with Kylo, Rey could’ve realised what he’d done and be like “you sly devil”.

This way he could’ve played the hobo but still been the Luke we all love and respect without being diminished.

If you didn’t notice, the scene with Yoda doesn’t alter the more Zen route he took in ROTJ. Yoda isn’t advising him on the force, he is advising him how to teach. Advising him as a fellow master. I think because Luke was so pivotal, Rian didn’t just have him fill the master/mentor role immediately. He brought back some of that negativity that characterized Luke in ANH and TESB. It created a nice character journey for Luke to take him where he needed to be to help Rey.

The problem of course is, that he didn’t really help Rey, and that she still succeeded despite this. She helped herself to some books, when she was fed up with him, after which Luke sort of rediscovered himself, and was able to create a diversion for the rebels. Ultimately though he wasn’t much of a mentor in this film, except to be an example of how not to be. Yoda told Luke how to be a better teacher, he got to stage an illusion, and then he died before he could pass on what he had learned.

This is Star Wars. Since when is dying a barrier to being a teacher and mentor?

Ehm, since ANH. Force Ghosts can provide guidance, but up until TLJ they couldn’t physically interact with their environment.

Well, then Rian Johnson should be worried right now. Back in 2011 he made joke about the Star Wars OT Blu rays. He tweeted “will Lucasfilm release the original cuts or just the cartoon versions?” or something like that.

Just kidding. Of course that tweet has not the same political magnitude like Gunns or Roseanne Barrs tweet. But as you said: No one is infallible.

Just completed my fourth viewing on Blu-ray. The movie really starts to grow on me.

One thing i noticed about the Canto Bight subplot. It wasn’t completely unnecessary. Because DJ got captured along with Finn & Rose he made a deal with the First Order. He showed them how to spot the cloaked Resistance ships on their way to Crait. That forces Holdo to weaponize hyperspace.

They can’t leave T2 alone 😦

People have survived being exposed to the vacuum of space before. Also remember that she is surrounded by the air that got blown out of the ship, which she could have subconsciously kept around her using the Force.

IMO the ‘Space Leia’ scene is problematic, because it is heavily switching between movie genres and their specific rules. The overall genre of the STAR WARS movies is science-fantasy. But the movie event of being sucked into space belongs mainly to the science-fiction genre. Being sucked into space is very well ‘documented’ in lots of sci-fi movies and even the dumbest movie-goer knows what happens to a character/person by that event. The rules are clear. But Rian Johnson tries to solve that science-fiction problem with the rules of the science-fantasy genre, let’s say magic, namely the Force. And that is why the scene does not work.

Here is another interesting quote from George Lucas. It can be heard on the Return of the Jedi 2004 DVD audio commentary. During the infamous Jedi Rocks scene in Jabbas Palace he says this:

I’m still amused by people that somehow think that when you use cyber technology or digital technology in movies that suddenly it’s fake. But when you look at the scene in here like Jabbas palace. Now there are some digital characters in here, but they are no more less fake than all the other characters are in here. Is a digital character more fake than a big fat rubber character? (laughs) I mean there is nothing real here at all. And it’s hard to say that a rubber character has more integrity than digital character. What i tried to do is make the characters become believable. So they look realistic enough to where you have a suspension the disbelief and accept them as characters, not as tricks. Which is what they all are.

From a philosophical stand point he might be right: cg or rubber - it is a fictional character, hence not real. But Lucas totally undermines the visual quality of both tricks. A rubber character looks more believeable than a CG character, due to his physical nature. Amazing how Lucas, who calls himself a filmmaker, fails to realize the crucial argument why his PT cg characters always got ‘meh’ feedback than his OT rubber characters.

I liked that too. No ‘Imperial flags everywhere’/‘we have to rebel’ melancholy. The whole crime syndicate theme was a breath of fresh air. I also liked the Enfys Nest crew. Visually they looked like a Mad Max gang in space. I was surprised that their leader was an attractive young woman. I expected a scarred tough guy with a beard and one eye. The young attractive woman was better though 😉

I actually agree with Mala about all the references that seemed fan servicey to me. But those things didn’t make it a bad film. It was a fun ride for the most part. But I certainly liked all the other recent star wars films more.

They could have done it - injecting lots of unnecessary star wars stuff - but they didn’t do it. Granted, they mention some of the stuff, but more importantly they did not show them. The present fan service elements were subtle enough for me. They did not distract from the story like in Rogue One.

I stand by my thesis: SOLO is a far superior ‘Star Wars Story’ movie than Rogue One.

Rogue One does not work on its own. It’s a cinematographic parasite that adheres between Episode III & IV. SOLO on the other hand works on its own. A person who never saw a single STAR WARS movie could watch SOLO without any previous knowledge. More so, there is a high possibility that this person falls in love with the universe and would like to see more of it - like A NEW HOPE. Becketts crew is a likeable bunch of scoundrels. The death of every crew member was touching in it’s own way - especially Rios and L3’s death were heart breaking.

Just saw SOLO … I loved it! A very entertaining space adventure with likeable known and likeable new characters. And thank god no distracting fan service like Rogue One. Maul as a crime boss? Yes, why not. Just his lightsaber force pull was unnecessary.

One of my favorite TV series of all time! Season 1 is undoubtedly the best season. Season 2 is half great/ half mediocre - Parkers girlfriend Annie Sloan was kinda annoying and almost every episode took place in the lame Atlas Diner. Season 3 is terrible though - they completely changed everything what made season 1 so entertaining.

Best characters: Of course Parker Lewis, Mikey Randall ,Jerry Steiner, Larry Kubiac, Dr. Norman Pankow, Frank Lemmer and Grace Musso.

Worst characters: Annie Sloan, Nick Comstock, Coach Hank Kohler, Brad Penny.

One thing i noticed during my third viewing: Lukes former lightsaber ignites faster with a different sound since he threw it away. Check various scences: Reys training at the rock, Rey VS Luke, Kylo ignites the saber to kill Snoke and the last Praetorian Guard.

Maybe the one Porg accidently changed the lightsabers configuration with his feet right before Rey picks it up?

… this time i really enjoyed THE LAST JEDI.

Maybe because i was prepared for the unexpected stuff Rian Johnson put into his movie. Some things are still strange (space cow milking, Carrie Poppins) or dissapointing (the cave beneath Ahch-To revealing absolutely nothing) but overall a very enjoyable Star Wars movie. Not as fun and entertaining as THE FORCE AWAKENS, but still good.

Mark Hamills performance was superb. But i have to admit i had to get used to his demoralized mental state. Before TLJ came out, i wrote the movie in my head. I expected Luke Skywalker went to the first Jedi temple to examine why the Force always splits itself into light & dark side. And that he would attempt to “repair” or seal the rift once and for all. By the way i never wished to see Luke ripping Star Destroyers apart. I wished to see some Jedi temple exploration, maybe with some traps (here comes my Dark Forces II fan mind) and a great showdown in the final hall. Maybe The Knights of Ren VS Luke & Rey - no Prequel-esque coreography though, but some decent raw TFA-esque lightsaber fight. Luke being captured at end by Snoke resulting a nice cliffhanger for Episode IX … oh man, some many things come into my mind i expected or wanted to see in TLJ. No wonder i was dissapointed 😉
