Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread

I finally got to sit down and enjoy my blu ray of Rogue One tonight. I love this movie more every time I watch it. Even characters that I felt were lackluster (such as Jyn and Cassian) have grown on me a lot. And I flipping love Baze and Chirrut, Guardians of the Whills (that is still SO cool).

I will say the hoops they have to jump through to actually transmit the plans get rather convoluted and are maybe a bit too much. But it’s not bad enough to hamper my enjoyment. Oh, and my wife pointed out that Jyn and Cassian amazingly have time to change out of their imperial disguises and back into their regular clothes while in the vault as K-2SO is fending off waves of Stormtroopers.

IIRC, the original film already established that Imperial uniforms magically fit over one’s own clothes, boots and all. 😉

Maybe Chewie hid the clothes decently put together in his bag? 😉

Haydens Christensens head on Sebastian Shaws Body - A digital autopsy
Time

Oh no, yet another about topic about Haydens Force Ghost? Yes, but this thread will not deal with the hot topic if Hayden Christensen makes more sense than Sebastian Shaw. This thread is a discussion about how accurate or how sloppy Lucas created his digital Frankenstein.

So i want to start this thread with the question about a specific detail, that always bugged me: Haydens head movement in his first shot.

The way he reacts (smiling, nodding) to Obi-Wan and then to Luke does not look natural at all. I heard/read somewhere that Hayden wasn’t aware that Lucas wanted to use this footage for that scene, so that could be one reason why Haydens reactions to Obi-Wan and Luke do not match 100% in that shot. But i think there is more to it. We know Lucas likes to digitally manipulate actors heads (Han Solo dodging Greedos shot for example).

My assumption is, that the movement of Haydens head looks kinda awkward & ghostly (no pun intended) because the spliced-in footage we see in his first shot is actually played BACKWARDS.

Sebastian Shaws body moves forward…
Hayden Christensens head moves backward…

I hope you guys know what i mean. Haydens head footage (played backwards in real time - i know, this is confusing) suggests an unused ROTS scene where Anakin saw Padme in the distance. At first he smils and then reacts with an amorous shy nodding and looks to a person next to him. Maybe Obi-Wan or Bail Organa in an early senate scene shortly after Palpatines rescue?

What do you think about this?

I honestly don’t think George’s beating heart has jack shit to do with any of it, I doubt anyone cares about “not releasing the originals out of respect to him” and the idea some have floated that it might have been in the deal he signed with Disney is simply ludicrous.

Ultimately, I think the real enemy here is simply just apathy and indifference on the part of whoever makes the distribution decisions (which might overlap with the rights issues).

One thing that’s interesting is there’s no way these new filmmakers haven’t brought the OOT up (I know Rian Johnson is on record for criticizing them). I wonder if they know the lowdown and if they’re privy to versions we aren’t.

Damn, shoulda asked Rian about that when I met him…

Is Rian Johnson criticizing the OOT, or the people? Who is ‘them’? also do you have a link? I’d love to see what he has to say as i really like his movie, and am stoked he is helming TLJ.

Rian basically called the SEs “cartoons” around the time the Blu-rays were coming out. Don’t have a link on hand.

I hope whoever wins is slightly knowledgable about the SE and inquires about the versions.

Well, then let’s hope that Gary Kurtz and Marcia Lucas win the tickets for the ANH screening 😉

Gary will cringe during the CGI Jabba scene and Marcia will mourn about what happened to her Oscar-honored Cut of Star Wars.

[George and Kathy enter the screening room]

George [points at Marcia and talks to Kathy]: I told you not to admit her!

Marcia: I must be allowed to speak.

Kathy: George c’mon get over it. She must be allowed to speak.

George [grabs Kathy by the throat]: You weak-minded Disney puppet. She’s using an old ex-wife mind trick.

Gary: George you will bring the Theatrical Cuts of Star Wars and Empire to us …, and Jedi too.

George [laughs]: Your producers wisdom will not work on me anymore.

Not to throw fuel on the fire but, considering the rumor about July 28th being a theatrical re-release of the original…

This magazine is coming out July 25. Now, it could totally be coincidence but isn’t it a bit strange that a 40th Anniversary book is coming out 3 days before this supposed theatrical re-release? Instead of in May?

First I’m hearing about this rumor. Was it brought up earlier in the thread or did news (well, rumor) of it just break somewhere else?

The theory came from the Disney schedule where something is mysteriously being released by Disney on July 28th - Untitled Fairy Tale. They wouldn’t say what it was.

The Untitled Fairy Tale could be a movie called Magic Camp

http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/801801-disneys-magic-camp-begins-production-starring-jeffrey-tambor

Produced by Disney. Scheduled for release in 2017.

Which has a title and isn’t a fairy tale.

And just started filming? No chance.

Let’s look at the clues:

 1. Scheduled for release in 2017 - CHECK
 2. A movie about a summer camp - which should be released prior or during the summer … maybe on the 28th July? - CHECK
 3. A movie about young magicians, a magic contest and magic bla, bla - FAIRY tale, anyone? - CHECK
 4. Since it is scheduled for 2017 release, we can assume low-budget CGI = short post-production phase? - CHECK

The costume almost looks too big on this chap. So an insert shot makes sense to me. Also note the Endor backdrop seems rather small. This could have been shot at ILM months after principal photgraphy wrapped.

Is he actually wearing the Vader costume? Looks he stood behind the costume-on-a-hatrack and just sticked his arms through.

Wow. Everyone is just giving up now aren’t they? I refuse to accept a world where a fan edit is the only way to watch the original versions.

I will not give up on the Original Trilogy. We’ve made too many compromises already; too many retreats. Lucas let Greedo shot first and we fall back. He inserts Hayden Christensen in Return of the Jedi and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn at the 40th anniversary of STAR WARS! This far, no further! And I will not buy another Special Edition release!
