The voice of Qui-Gon
Time
I don't know that a few voice-over sentences at the end of Revenge would have done the idea justice. About extra Qui-gon, though, I would love to somehow work his speech from that Phantom commercial ("it will be a hard life...") into episode 2. Anakin could "remember" it in some reflective moment after his mother's death.

The Merits of the Prequel Trilogy and the "Saga"
Time
Well, it seems to me that there is now less suspense and unpredictability about Darth turning back to the good side in Jedi. When Vader was just the villain, even threatening to turn Leia 10 minutes before the saga is over, there was still some question about what this guy would do. Now having seen him start out as a lovable kid, I think people will see it all coming. I hope I'm wrong.

The Merits of the Prequel Trilogy and the "Saga"

That poor kid. His first scene he has to express a schoolboy crush, AND explain he's a slave, he's a pilot, he used to be owned by a hutt, and tell Padme she's an angel. I don't think a human exists who could totally pull that off, let alone a child. Lucas' instinct to cast a "regular" boy over a trained Dakota Fanning-type mini-adult was okay by me. But he should have followed through by keeping it simple for the kid. Everyone can relate to liking that older girl in school, or in the neighborhood, a look and one simple line of dialogue would have said it all.

Remember when...
Time
Well, from my experience nobody teased anybody JUST over Star Wars and I went to 4 different schools from 1979-86. In fact, the teacher organized an OPTIONAL after-school trip to see Jedi and the ENTIRE class went. (it was my second time seeing it. school was a half-day, almost summer. Most of us even stayed after that to see WarGames.)

What do you think of the Prequel Trilogy? a general discussion thread
Time
Shaw having hair and his limbs doesn't mean anything. ObiWan is also not cut in half, or naked. "The good part" of Anakin notion doesn't fly with me. He's not Sybil, he's not Dr. jekyll. There aren't "parts". He's just Anakin. He's not reverting back to a former personality, he's the same guy, just continuing FORWARD without being a Sith asshole.

Gomer, I was seeing your view until you said all six movies have the same amount of expository dialogue, then you lost me.
About Lucas needing fewer yes-men, I dunno if that would matter, or that he would listen. It seems to me that he already second-guessed himself too much. I like a lot of his first impulses better. Obi-wan discovering Anakin, Wookies instead of Ewoks. That annotated screenplay book even says his initial idea for Boba Fett's death was in a big brawl with Lando Calrissian, similar to the Jango rain fight. That said, my only real beef with the prequels is the total lack of urgency (and a genuine, relatable love story) in Episode 2.

Sergio Leone Preservations - Dollars Trilogy, Fistful of Dynamite, Once Upon a Time in the West (Released)
Time
A very cool project. I've been waiting FOREVER to get Duck you Sucker and both Dollars here in the states. (I really wish the new Good bad Ugly had the option to watch the shorter version with the original audio). Side question: For purely educational purposes, is there anywhere to see the butchered short version of Once upon a time in America?

I like it. Just not as much as the original trilogy. I like Clones the least, but I'm curious to see if Lucas does anything with it next year. I can't shake the feeling that Lucas wasn't quite happy with it. He was burdened with a lot of extra hassles during that movie: casting Anakin all over again, working the kinks out of the digital camera, a CGi Yoda, bringing in that last-minute writer, who was then not asked back for III, or ever mentioned again. I think it's also significant that he brought in an outside editor for Sith, after Ben Burtt cut Clones all on his own, (AND doing the sound) which could not have been ideal.

"..secret to the future is quantity," Lucas said
Time
It's just too bad he doesn't like simply directing movies. To direct THX, Graffiti, and Star Wars by age 33 was remarkable. It seems like a waste to just become another boring entertainment brand name, but whatever. I really doubt the 2006 dvds were a favor for fans, or an insult to fans. It was barely a blip in his mind, one of many things he stamps for approval in a year. He's clearly occupied with other stuff.

The prequels ARE full of striking, memorable images and moments, but they have to click just as regular movies, too. When the audience laughs at Anakin and Padme, something's not right. Maybe the regular test screening process would have helped, instead of just showing it to Ron Howard and Spielberg. The IMAX version of Clones was 20 minutes shorter. Whether it was better or worse, just that fact that that was even POSSIBLE should be a clue to something. I actually don't think that Jake Lloyd was a bad actor, he was given a part essentially written as a 13 year old. When you're 9, that is a huge gap, and is just never going to seem natural. On top of that it's Star Wars dialogue, which is hard for even the likes of Alec Guinness. I'm actually amazed he worked at all.

For Those who bought the Sept. 12th Release, Thoughts so far?
Time
I've had a weird reaction. I love how different the 3 are from each other. So much that I think the 2007 set should just be a simple 6 disc thing: the theatrical versions of all SIX movies, as they were in the theaters, flaws and all. No commentaries, just 6 good transfers. The movies have been talked to death, there'll be an HD set eventually, let's just let it stand as it really was for a while!

Alternate title for "A New Hope"?
Time
The oldest place I've seen it is in the Art of Star Wars book, from 1979. It isn't a very pulpy title. If he had gone that route, some early subtitles from the old 1974 drafts like "Adventures of Starkiller" or "The Princess of Ondos" could've been tweaked to fit maybe? "The Princess of Alderaan" or "The Adventures of Skywalker" or something. I always liked the title of a section of the Marvel comics version, simply "Death Star!"

The Merits of the Prequel Trilogy and the "Saga"

I just don't see Anakin as the hero of I-III, (let alone all SIX movies). I see Qui-gon or Obi-Wan filling that role. Anakin is more like a plot device, a dangerous one. I enjoy the movies (well, I and III mainly) in that way, it's just all these friggin interviews after the fact that tell me I'm watching it "the wrong way" that start pissing me off. "Anakin is the hero! Anakin is the victim!" Huh? Anakin's a cunt!
