What did the Prequel Trilogy need?
Time
In my opinion, the only thing the prequels really needed was a better second movie. It's okay that Phantom takes its sweet time because it's the introduction to this world and the story picks up steam as it goes into the other movies. Attack of the Clones had ONE important job, which is to really make Anakin's 2 relationships work. To make you love the romance as much as everybody loved Han and Leia, and to make Anakin and Ben like brothers. Revenge of the Sith would have been coasting on that. If those 2 relationships could be made to work as well as Han-Leia and Luke-Han, then the whole thing would be elevated. Or just look at Jaws. It's those 3 characters that elevate that movie way beyond its cheap Universal-disaster movie roots.

Where do I go from here as a SW fan?
Time
Unfortunately, it will be tough to move on before getting a proper release of the old versions. If you care enough to be here, you're in for good. You can try to force yourself to like the new versions, or force yourself to ignore Star Wars altogether but it probably won't stick. I'm going to keep beating the tired, annoying original versions drum. Someday, when I can simply kick back and watch the movies in a presentation equal to fucking Krull, this will all seem silly, and we can enjoy as much or as little of Star Wars as we want, just like James Bond or Jaws or Godfather.

The Merits of the Prequel Trilogy and the "Saga"
Time
I think the hostility towards the prequels/saga around here is different, because it's seen as a "threat" to getting the original versions a decent release. If the "saga" is accepted and popular, then there's no need to bother with 77-83. I find it VERY hard to objectively look at the big 1-6 saga because I feel like it's fucking me out of the originals, my favorite movies ever. And Gomer, yes taste is subjective. So keep that in mind before filibustering about how the movies are better now and puppets can't possibly be better than CGI.
Sorry, I keep seeing ads for this Superman mega-set and these restored James Bond movies and I'm fucking pissed Star Wars '77 gets treated worse than Superman 4 and A View to a Kill.

Opinion Poll on Go-Mer-Tonic
Time
Lucas is not reading this board, and will never, ever, be aware of anything said here. So, the "don't criticize him or he won't release the old versions" thing doesn't make any sense to me. For whatever reason, I guess I have grown to dread seeing Gomer's name everywhere (sorry dude) seemingly all day, every day. Also, I thought the ORIGINAL trilogy, 77-83, is the particular fetish of this place? I know it's mine. (and I mostly like the fuckin prequels. I'm just sick of hearing about them). A prequel-free zone is a little hard to find on the internets.

Here's my stance
Time
The current Close Encounters disc is just the 97 laserdisc set with a new transfer. I don't know how well it sold. There has to be demand, like any movie. Sony has to want to do it and Spielberg has to supervise it. I don't think he has ever ruled out an "ultimate" set with all the versions. What was different on the criterion laser? I've read conflicting things.

Here's my stance

Bantha Tracks Spring 1980:

"SW: At one point there were going to be twelve Star Wars films.

GL: I cut that number down to nine because the other three were tangential to the saga. Star Wars was the fourth story in the saga and was to have been called Star Wars: Episode Four A New Hope. But I decided people wouldn't understand the numbering system so we dropped it. For Empire, though, we're putting back the number and will call it Episode Five: The Empire Strikes Back. After the third film in this trilogy we'll go back and make the first trilogy, which deals with the young Ben Kenobi and the young Darth Vader.

SW: What is the third trilogy about?

GL: It deals with the character that survives Star Wars III and his adventures."

More recently, Gary Kurtz also said there were 9 planned. George should just say "look, the story was already getting thin by Jedi, so I gave up on the 3rd trilogy".
