Sorry if I'm missing something, but why would Luke go to Dagaobah first? Rescuing Han should be his first priority. In fact, Irvin Kershner felt strongly that Luke should go with Lando and Chewie at the end of Empire, and settled for the line about "meeting at the rendezvous". Plus, Luke doesn't know that Yoda's going to tell him "no more training etc.", he thinks he's going for more training. They wouldn't rescue Han without him, and they can't wait for Luke to finish training. Every day is a day that Jabba might get bored and kill Han.

Could Empire keep its opening shot if the unfinished death star is somehow inserted in the distance? In other words, pan down to Star Destroyer, (now with death star in background), then the closer shot of the death star with a shuttle approaching, then landing, and Darth getting off? Then for Jedi, the opening shot stays as is, but becomes the Emperor's shuttle approaching instead of Darth's? This would keep tradition and prevent having to do a whole new opening shot from scratch?

Maybe if Jedi starts with the emperor's arrival, there'd still be a star destroyer at the beginning? The whole second death star thing is a pisser. "Spreading it around" like this is cool, and could help. Maybe it wouldn't feel like such a re-hash if the briefing scene is somehow re-cut to grimly emphasize that this time it's an ASSASSINATION. Killing the emperor is the goal instead of another death star graphic, another "knock out the main reactor blah blah" speech...

Right on. Maybe somehow it goes: "I love you"/anakin smiles/"we could keep it a secret". He smiles during the arena fight, after she says the bit about a diplomatic solution. Maybe that shot could be stolen and cropped/flipped and the whole scene tinted a uniform color? Would definitely need something to cut away to in that room, though. maybe a geonosian watching them?

I think the last shot tells it all. They're clearly getting married, but nobody's there, so it's a secret. As long as "Attachment is forbidden" and Obi-wan thinking she's merely being escorted home are still in. Though it would have been cool for them to defiantly, confidently, make wedding plans as they're being taken to the arena instead of her weird love confession. Make that scene completely defiant instead of resigned and mopey. Kind of like when Han and Luke are sentenced to sarlaac death, but merely make arrogant comments to Jabba.

I'd also vote to keep the bedroom scene. Seeing a girl's room after meeting the parents is simple and relatable, unlike most of their scenes. Sorry if this has been discussed already, but have you considered having the first kiss scene completely without dialogue, and without her pulling away? In other words, they get off the boat, walk to the balcony, look at each other, kiss. There's a version of the love theme at the very end of the end credits that is very subtle and could go under the whole thing. It seems to me that if they meet the parents, have the nice picnic in the meadow, and then have their first kiss, (in that order), presto! They are young kids in love, and you can cut out ALL the rest of their horrible, creepy love story, and I mean all of it.

I always figured Luke didn't go back to Yoda right away because planning Han's rescue and sorting out his feelings about those two liars was more important ("Ben, why didn't you tell me?"). Indeed, one of my favorite things about Jedi, is that even though the wise Ben and Yoda just want to turn him into an assassin and kill his father, Luke refuses. He's a better human being than he is a Jedi. Anyway, the Ranch project is very cool and fascinating, but I also think it'd be cool to see a Jedi-cut that is operating under the mandate that it's January 1983 and the movie's getting an alternate polish/fine cut than the one it did get. Hence, limited to stuff like tighter/more savvy cutting, the "Revenge" title, the blue saber, no prequel-connecting, and the sandstorm if it turns up in the '07 dvds. That scene may not advance the plot, but it's an important character moment to have the gang reunited, especially for Han and his newfound team spirit. Plus, most of it is Han and Luke, at the Falcon, making it a nice bookend to their goodbye in Empire. (I'm not at all anti-prequel. Well, I'm not anti-Phantom or Sith. Ahem. Looking at you, Clones).

Uh, I'm not "stealing" from anywhere. As for "Revenge of the Jedi", has anyone tried stacking the opening crawl from Revenge of the Sith on top of the crawl from Jedi, then cropping out everything but the word "Revenge"? I think that's how it'd work in final cut, not sure about other setups. It would be a frame at a time, and probably a hassle.

If there was going to be an edit of all three movies into one big 60s style Ben-Hur epic, with an intermission and an overture, maybe you could do exactly that. All the establishing shots of the incomplete Death Star could be moved to the first movie and vice versa. Maybe when Obi-Wan is shutting off the tractor beam, he's also sabotaging something that will delay the completion...

Well, I guess since the Death Star threatening to blow up the rebel base in Star Wars was cobbled together after the fact, maybe that could be done again with graphics, p.a. announcements, "targeting Endor" etc. The thing is, the movie's already ripping off New Hope a little too hard as it is. The throne room editing could be effective either way, since it's already some of the better stuff in the movie. For me, it seems there's bigger fish to fry-like Endor, "a certain point of view", ewok battle, the dorky ending (both versions) and that flabby middle. I actually love the movie, but it's like a hot girl with some bad zits.

That's a good idea. As far as Jedi goes, I think it's probably the movie that could benefit the most from one of these re-cuts. It would be interesting to approach it like a good movie in trouble, like Star Wars was, and make a lot of subtle changes. After watching the dvd extras, I'm convinced Paul Hirsch is the unsung hero of the trilogy, and his absence hurt Jedi more than Gary Kurtz'. He clearly was ruthless about keeping it tight and had a good bullshit-meter. Just for example, I doubt he would have allowed the briefing room scene to be so jokey and devoid of tension. Just cutting won't really help Endor, though. We now have six movies worth of detailed, exotic worlds...and California. Maybe changing the time of day would help, some mist, some shafts of sunlight. We know Lucas has a hard-on for dusk/magic hour. When he did the special eds., I was hoping he'd add in some big, humming David Lynch-y machinery/refineries here and there, to show how the Empire was industrializing the place. (exploiting/polluting the "green moon" was a part of the original script, I believe). 3 or 4 matte paintings and some interesting sound fx underneath would've done a lot.

Maybe this is a dumb idea, but I'd like Watto to have one sympathetic moment. When Anakin says "they seemed nice to me", Watto's "clean the racks" reply could be replaced with the later shot of him saying "that you did, the boy's good etc." with the smile and the approving finger. Then change the subtitle to "You liked that girl, eh? So go talk to her."

I totally have "alternate Jedi" on the brain now too, dude! For some reason, I always wanted to see a version of Jedi where Luke has a blue saber, probably because I have a ton of 1st grade nostalgia for those early trailers. And the poster. and the action figure. Plus I thought blue would go better with the "moodyness" of the final duel. The green one vs. the overly pink one seems really gaudy.

Neat clips. The Geonosis War is soulless because it's two sterile cgi video-game armies without any of our heroes, and you don't particularly care which side wins. Plus it has no music other than chopped up stock music from a different movie. The hoth battle is a good thing to look at because it's almost totally from Luke's pov with only a few brief "God's-eye" shots, and it has distinct music. It's probably impossible, and it'd be a lot shorter, but I'd love for the whole battle to be down at ground level, from Mace Windu's pov. Make it all about Mace and his small group of troopers making their way through the chaos.

I'd love a less whimsical version of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Tone down the kids and their precious antics and cutesy dialect (they were the Jar Jar of their day to me) and track in some Brian May music from 1st two movies. The Jarre score is so un-apocalyptic.
In a similar vein, Star Trek IV with some Horner/Goldsmith instead of that christmas music would be interesting.

To me, the entire fireplace scene is so beyond help, it should go. Restoring the deleted padme scenes is a cool idea, though-not because they're such great scenes (cause they ain't), but because they serve the love story better. Meeting a girl's parents and seeing her room is simple and relatable. "I'm a senator, you're a jedi blah blah"etc. is not. (don't you just hate when the girls' a senator, and you're a jedi? cause, we've all been there, brother).
I actually feel that Clones is the only movie in need of changes, although if hell froze over I'd love to see Jedi get one big, probably impossible change. First, Boba Fett crawls out of the sarlaac as the skiff leaves. He tracks Han to Endor. Then use the deleted bunker shootout with Fett digitally replacing the stormtroopers. (Lucas cut out a scene in which Han and some rebels come across a couple stormtroopers in the bunker and shoot it out. See pictures on Starwarz.com). Have the troopers replaced with Fett (or pick one trooper to replace with Fett and keep the others). Maybe a short hand-to-hand struggle with Chewie vs. Fett (if a convincing digital Chewie can be done someday, just in a few quick, blurry Bourne Supremacy shots), ending with Chewie cracking open Fett's chest armor, so Han can blast him (a la Grievous). There should be plenty of shots of Harrison Ford pointing and shooting that could be cannibalized.

Idea: Another Star Trek Phase 2 idea

Although I like Trek 1's boring-ness (I find it soothing, like looking at a fish tank), an interesting compression could occur during the long drydock scene: The various expository conversations seen later ("Epsilon 9, Enterprise is the only ship, blah blah") could be condensed into a few bits talking to Kirk on a screen in the shuttle as he comes over. I love Jerry Goldsmith as much as the next guy, but that scene is just excessive.

Idea: 'Escape from L.A.' - a fan edit - isolating tracks for better audio?
Time

Hi. Just discovered this forum, love it. This may be a dumb question, but does anyone have advice for isolating dialogue? I had to get final cut pro for work, and it was so friggin expensive, I’d like to get as much use out of it as possible. I’ve been wanting to attempt an alternate version of Escape from L.A. using the infinitely better music from New York (just got the soundtrack). Is this even feasible? Any words of wisdom is appreciated.
