Soundtrack for Star Wars OOT DVD?

Furthermore, would the 2.0 decoded into pro-logic sound nearly as good as the 6-track (70mm) audio?

Bitrate for the 2.0 tracks on the 2004 DVDs was 192kbps, which is pretty much the standard for 2.0 tracks. Some companies have used 384 kbps, but not many.

In answer to your second question, a 2.0 track, by nature of its design, is not going to sound as good as 6-track 70mm. It may come close to sounding like Dolby Stereo in a theatre (4 track surround matrixed into two tracks), but it will lack the "baby boom" elements of a 6-track 70mm track. For that, you would need a 4.1 DD track.

Keep in mind that Dolby Digital (AC-3) is a lossy compession system, so something of the original tracks will inevitably be lost. The only way to come close to the original theatrical sound experience is to use a lossless audio codec, like Dolby TrueHD, which uses MLP (Meridian Lossless Processing) for compression.

Maybe not the same fan base but Abel Gance's Napoleon was edited into approximately 19 different versions, mostly by Abel Gance himself. I think GL's revisionism with the SW films is in the same realm.

Thanks for the support Dayv, and it's true I am absolutely shattered and stressed.

On top of all the standard moving stress, I have just had a huge falling out with my insane depressed miserable parents the day before I leave and am staying at a friend's place, which totally sucks (falling ou with the olds, not hanging with my friend). I swear those guys should go to councilling, and I think I probably should too.

P.P.S The next time I speak to you all I will be in North Dakota.

Whereabouts and for how long? Mebbe we can meet up (Minot is about 4 1/2 hours from my house. Minot be able to make it, but it's worth a shot.

One word: bitrate. If these discs use the standard 192 kbps rate for Dolby 2.0, it's going to sound anemic in comparison to a 5.1 track (which is the case with the 2004 discs). If they use a 384 kbps rate, the sound will be fuller. Ideally, THX would use a PCM track instead, which has a bitrate of over 1500 kbps, but I doubt they'll do this. I don't see them using a 4.1 track to approximate the 70mm experience.

The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!

I think you're on the right track, zombie84. I don't think Fox would distribute the product at this stage of the game if it was simply going to be a port of an LD transfer. Fox's record is not exactly stellar, but they have tried to improve their product at most opportunities.
At absolute worst, I think the difference will be comparable to the difference between the early 90s restoration of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the 2001 DVD; not perfect, but a vast improvement over what was previously available. What I really hope is that the grayscale is maintained a la what Mike Verta was trying to do with his Star Wars Legacy project, among the other corrections he was making. The 2004 DVDs have very crunched blacks.

I was just over on HTF and found this posting:
Original Non Special Edition STAR WARS Coming to DVD!(No, this is not a joke!)
This was just posted on the Classic Horror Film Board by David Colton, editor of USA TODAY:

Original Star Wars back: Han Solo shoots first! (Again...) We're reporting tomorrow that Lucas is releasing the three ORIGINAL Star Wars films -- without the digital tweaks and effects -- on DVD after all. And, once again, Han Solo will be shown shooting first.

I had a bit of this wrong in the original posting, so lemme try again:

-- As we all know, in the original STAR WARS, Han Solo pulls his gun and shoots Greedo in the Cantina scene.

-- When the film was restored and digitally tweaked for a new theatrical run, Lucas added a moment where Greedo fires first, misses, and then Solo shoots Greedo. As if it was self-defense.

-- Fans objected, and when the film hit DVD in 2004, Lucas tweaked it yet AGAIN, and this time Solo and Greedo shot simultaneously.

-- In the upcoming DVD (due in September), the original scene is back. Greedo warns about Jabba, Solo tries to wave him off and then pulls his gun and shoots Greedo dead.

By the way, the story says the transfer of the 'original' version will not be as pristine and scrubbed as the restored DVDs. In fact, at one point there was talk the originals no longer existed.

Anyhow, once we publish (in USA TODAY), tomorrow, I'll post the entire story.

Take this however you want it, but I think it warrants discussion.
