Grinder's PAL widescreen project (Released)
Time
Alright, I'm glad they arrived, I was starting to get a bit worried. And it's good to know I'm not the only one enjoying the subtitles. To everyone else: TESB is currently being uploaded to a.b.starwars, look for "Grinder's Star Wars Original Trilogy - Episode V". I have a new payserver account, so the post will be 100% complete this time. Enjoy! And let's hear some reactions.

Help Wanted: Requesting a big favour from a French speaker

Those discs are practically the same as the normal French THX discs, but there are differences. On the normal French set the shot of Luke's speeder in front of Ben's house is a low res still, on your set it's ok (the wipe is still missing though). Arnie.d can tell you more about it.
Try to get a (Pioneer) 2950, 925, 909 or 919. The 2950 is considered the best PAL player, but it is a twelve year old machine. The 925 is supposed to be nearly as good, but is two years younger. The 909 and 919 are the youngest two high-end Pioneer models for the PAL market, from '98 and '99 respectively (they also play DVD). They're technically identical, except the 919 can play DTS sound from DVD's, and the 909 can't. They both read DTS from LD. If your main goal is to transfer some stuff I'd get a 2950, but when you get one nowadays it usually needs some professional cleaning at least. If you want a player for regular use, I'd get a young player: a 909 or 919. I have both a 909 and a 2950, if you want to see what the quality difference is like I can send you a clip. It isn't much.

EDIT: You should be able to get each of these players for about 200 euros.

I find it very weird he gives all three the same ranking. I'm working on TESB now, and I think it really is not as good as ANH. The latter is only undersaturated, and too dark. On TESB the temporal smoothing is much worse, it is oversaturated at some points, undersaturated at others: saturation, brightness and contrast fluctuate as hell.

EDIT: And a lot more line drops.

What do you think?

Hey Russ, you got it complete! So the repost worked...

About the scratches: I've hated those ever since I first saw them (in my case, on Moth3r's release). So I decided they should be fixed. The original plan was to extract those two frames, fix them in Photoshop, and re-insert them. But before I went through all that hassle, I checked if I could just as well ditch the two frames. And to my surprise you don't notice that at all, mostly due to the wild camera movement in that shot. That entire shot needed some serious enhancement btw: the saturation/brightness/contast is totally off, I don't know what they've done over at THX: the NTSC releases don't have that. Anyway, I fixed that too, so now it matches up with the other Tantive shots.

Thanks for the flowers Moth3r! And for putting the screens up. Remember everyone, during playback this look different than on a screenshot About the subtitles: I ripped them from the official DVD, did some minor edits on the English ones ("spice mines of Kessel" instead of "Kessel spice mines" for instance). But I had to improve the Dutch ones quite a bit, I really wasn't satisfied with the original ones. I did leave the original translation "Death Star" > "Ster des Doods" however. "Doodster" is a bit childish I think. The same as I would say "I will kill you dead!", you'll know what I mean, but it doesn't really sound impressive, does it? I prefer English subs anyway.

STAR WARS: the alt.binaries.starwars thread

There sure has gone something wrong with the upload, probably due to my server nova.planet.nl, because all posts I have ever done were always 99% complete. I downloaded it myself, and I was only 216 blocks short, but could fix it with the 261 complete PAR2 blocks. It's very weird, even binsearch.info says it's 100% complete. I was planning on posting an extra 10% PAR2, but 1500 blocks, thats 50%!!! Let me know if more people are missing over 500 blocks, I may have to repost the whole damn thing.

Posting 10% (299 blocks) extra PAR2, and will start a complete repost after that. Using a friend of mine's payserver now.

SIX fantastic brand new preservation projects..... (Released)

One thing I'm still planning on is checking out a pre-THX PAL widescreen version. Curious how it looks. It's a good idea to transfer all the PAL releases aswell, but the problem is that LD's themselves will be pretty much useless. I think replacing all English dialogue with French, German or Spanish is worse than any of the changes Lucas made! So you'd have to put another soundtrack under them at least. And they're much harder to come by than the NTSC releases.

Adding subtitles on DVDs
Time
I'd say, rip the subs from the official DVD, and modify them. That way the timecodes are almost right, synching them up at about 10 spots will do the trick. On doom9.net there's a guide for SubRip, in URUSoft Subtitle Workshop you can edit them and synch them up to the movie, which you can rip with this program. And finally I'd use Adobe Encore for the mastering.

NOW WHAT DID I TELL YOU!!!

Just kidding, thanks. I hope everyone will say that

Dammit! I downloaded part034.rar, and it is incomplete indeed. But I have 29 of the 32 blocks. This is weird, I have posted several things in the past, and I never had to repost anything. Also Yenc, Binsearch.info, and my agent say it's 100% complete... I'll download it myself as soon as the post is finished, and create extra PAR2 files, and repost the broken rars.

I just noticed we were doing the same thing, only I was creating an anamorphic image, original black bars included. Which is something you don't want to do, I know now. 324*1.33=432 and 432*1.33=576 you see? We were just thinking in different directions.

I don't apply the same script on the whole movie btw, because of the vertical shifts. My DVD versions don't have them.
