~French Coffret Trilogie LD to DVD transfer~ (Released)
Time
As you may have seen on the picture of my SW LD collection I have three copies of the first issue PAL disc: I had bought one through ebay, got the second in a batch, and decided since I had two, to get a third one so I could try and TooT 'em. Two of the discs have some very minor rot, but the Tantive sequence on the third is pretty bad. I also read somewhere that it's supposed to be colored snow, but as you can see here that's a load of crap:

Yeah I don't want any icons on my beautiful wallpapers. When I posted the pic I saw the DVD Shrink logo was on the far right, rather expected someone to flame me for that. I only use it to rip DVD's that don't have to be compressed, I always ditch everything except for the main title. The Rebuilder icon is just out of screen
Impressive SW LD collection you've got there. And you've got one LD player more than me, dammit! Which types?

- Fender Princeton 100 watts amp and Jackson Rhoads V
- Thorens turntable, the Pioneer 2950 underneath it, Philips DVD player at the bottom
- My stereo: doesn't look like much, but it sounds incredible for a midi tower, the Pioneer 909 underneath it, cheap ass DVD player at the bottom.
- Philips 9520 (32"), underneath it the center speaker with the PS1 behind it (I skipped the PS2, can't wait for the PS3).
- Bonus question: the flag at the top is from...

Some advise needed on NTSC > PAL (IVTC)
Time
Thanks a lot, TDeint works nicely. But converting a music LD from NTSC to PAL wasn't one of my brightest ideas: the helium effect is unbearable. As far as I know there is no pitch preserver that gives a decent result, and time stretching the video doesn't sound like a good idea either. So I'll leave Van Morrison in NTSC. I encoded it with CCE at 23,976 fps, 2:3 pulldown, GOP sequence: M=3, N/M=5. Burnt it to a DVD, plays good, but it looks as if there is more motion judder that on the LD itself, and when I demux the DVD with DGIndex it marks it as progressive, while I didn't select that in CCE of course. Am I missing something here, NTSC isn't supposed to be progressive right?

Some advise needed on NTSC > PAL (IVTC)
Time
I'm doing a transfer of two NTSC LD's (Van Morrison and Blade Runner). And have found out how annoying the format is. As a complete noob on the field of NTSC, I just started working on it, without doing any research. I noticed the last two of every 5 frames had interlace problems, so I designed an AVS script to get 4 good frames out of every 5 NTSC frames:

separatefields
selectevery(10,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,9)
weave

And that worked perfectly, but only for short pieces, because apparently those groups of 5 frames aren't consistent throughout a 2 hour movie. After reading ADM's tutorial I discovered what I had been trying to do is known as IVTC. I let GordianKnot spit out an IVTC script, which comes down to:

LoadPlugin("D:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\DGMPGDec\DGDecode.dll")
mpeg2source("E:\Van Morrison\s1.d2v")
Telecide(order=1,guide=1).Decimate()

And added this to make it PAL:

Lanczos4Resize(720,576)
assumefps(25,1,true)

Now, the IVTC script does a pretty good job, but there are still some frames here and there that have interlace problems. Is there a better (flawless) way to IVTC? Or is this as good as it gets?

They don't fill up DVD5 space either. The best explanation I could come up with is that different divisions work on different parts of the DVD, so they have to keep a safety margin. But it puzzles me aswell.

Damn what a bunch of work! One piece of advise: rip the subtitles from the official DVD, and use those. Very few corrections are needed, sync it and you're practically done. I have always found it awkward ISOMIX has three lines of subs, that just isn't right. Good you kept them in the black bar though, that's where the official DVD's go wrong.

Oh yeah, it's 25... I read 40 in an article a couple of months ago. Anyway, since blu-ray is being developed by Philips (responsible for the development of the LD, CD and DVD), Sony, Pioneer, Apple, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox and so on. And since they already beat the HD-DVD in capacity, I think that will become the bigger succes. But I don't expect it to replace the DVD, certainly not any time soon. DVD is capable of containing one movie in excellent quality, no need for an upgrade. But when you're talking about HD, that's a different story. How big is it getting over there in the US? Over here it's nothing yet.

HD-DVD sucks, that's true, it's just a desperate failed attempt to compete with Blu-Ray. But Blu-Ray is a very useful product. By making it possible to put 40 gigs on a single layer disc (instead of the pathetic 15 on a HD-DVD) you certainly create huge advantages over DVD. You could put 160 gigs on a (double sided dual-layered) disc, how cool is that!

<strong>Grinder's PAL widescreen project</strong> (Released)

Nice to hear you like it. After all, your uploads on myspleen got me into the whole thing. So you like the Dutch subs ey, can you make any sense of them?

About the project, I'm clearing disk space right now, for I'll be recording ROTJ tonight. I should be able to finish it within a week, and then it'll hit the newsgroup immediately. Is there any need to upload the entire trilogy?
