I would like to follow after darthrush in removing the fathier stuff altogether, going from Finn and Rose leaving their cell straight to hyperspace.
To do this, it would be very helpful to have some sort of shot to establish that BB8 is inside the cell with them, and another to show that BB8 is following them. (This could be adding him to the shot of them starting to move toward the cell door, or a separate shot of BB8 beginning to roll, implying he’s following them.)

Does anyone have the ability and desire to put something like this together? Also, I should have a rough cut available soon, if anyone would like to preview the film as a whole with all these changes implemented.

Please tell me this means no kids at the end… 😉

I’d be willing to preview btw

I think you should go right to the code breaker and cut the Fathiers. We can assume DJ’s ship was a quicker escape plan.

If you remove Broom Boi you can flip the last two shots of the Falcon in hyperspace and end with the group shot on the Falcon as I suggested before. The shot is perfectly framed and would make for a great ending shot. I followed your criticism from before and removed the voices at the end of the clip as I just added in a stock sound effect of them originally. I think it works well but I don’t want to pressure you with it. I’m not good enough with the editing tools to do the whole movie myself, but I think it might be a good thing for your edit 😃

As much of a problem that it was, Canto Bight needs to stay as it is essential to Finn’s character arc in the film, and through the right trims and cuts I think it can be a lot better, like a quick mini-adventure. The only problem is that if you trim/cut the Fathiers too much, you will also need to remove the kids later on as the audience would have no exposure to them. If you keep the Fathiers but trim them, I think you should consider removing the kids. I think it hurts Finn and Rose’s characters if they free the slave animals and not the slave kids.

JEDIT: I think you should cut it so that they run into the casino to find the codebreaker and are arrested. They are in a hurry to find the codebreaker, they should not be taking their time.

I redid my concept ending for TLJ to clean it up a little more. I think that this could be a good concept for fan-editors who want to keep the Canto Bight kids in and end the film differently. It’s not perfect but it’s a good start.

It now ends like this:
Kylo w/ Dice -> Falcon Escape -> Canto Bight Kids -> Falcon Party -> End Credits

Let me know what you think!

One more thing about the switching the ending before I shut up about it…

I do believe that there is merit in reordering the scenes as it helps to show how quickly Luke’s act is already spreading, it also fixes the weird pothole where Broom Boi appears to be watching the Falcon go into hyperspace which it would already be in at that point. Also, it adds more to Leia’s “We have everything we need.” line as the audience would already see that people are willing to help the Resistance, i.e. Broom Boi, and it provides a clearer resolution to the “no one is coming to help” problem on Crait.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like a more optimistic ending if we end with Rey and the gang (characters we can relate more to as we know their place in the story) as opposed to Broom Boi, a character with next to no lines that will cause people to make theories about him for 2 years. I agree that the kids need to stay, but the focus at the end of the movie should be on where are characters are currently at and focus on leading into the next movie and where they will be, similar to the ending of The Empire Strikes Back, or any other Star Wars movie for that matter.

Okay, I’m done now 😃

If you are ending on the Falcon the ending shot should be the group shot of everyone, not the Falcon going into hyperspace. The music will need to be adjusted accordingly.

Oh, that could work better … I’d like to see a clip of that!

A little off topic Hal, but have you considered how to end the film yet? I see a lot of edits that end with the Falcon going into hyperspace which just looks bad. If you go that approach, I think you should consider ending with the shot of everyone on the Falcon. I did a very rough mock-up which has the incorrect closing circle since my freeware program is very limited, but it gives the same idea either way.

Maybe something along these lines works better:

Poe: "Urgent message"
Hux: "Monologue"
Show engine charging in the x-wing
Poe: "Okay I’ll hold"
Hux: "Can he hear me?"
Officer: "I believe he’s toying with you sir"
Poe: "BB-8 punch it"
Officer: "He’s going for the dreadnaught."
Hux: “He’s insane.”

Slightly keeping the humor but toning it down.

Post is from TK-422 on another TLJ fanedit topic, I cannot figure out how to link his post but all credit is his. I definitely think this is something you should consider for your edit:

One idea I’ve been thinking about for the past few days is to push the “Luke’s Moment” deleted scene all the way to the point where Rey leaves Ach-Tu. I think that a lot of the issue people took with Luke’s characterization in TLJ was due to how bitter and dismissive he seemed. Obviously he ends up being the Luke Skywalker everybody loves, but we never really see that transition take place. He’s constantly bitter for 90 minutes, has the scene with Yoda, and then is suddenly the hero everybody has dreamt of. But if you move him having a moment in his hut to the point where Rey confronts him about how he turned Ben to the dark side, it’s a lot more meaningful.

I think that the intent of the deleted scene was to show his reaction to Han’s death, but it doesn’t come off that way. The sequence of events is “Where’s Han” < Kylo talking to Snoke < Kylo breaking his mask in the elevator < Rey telling Luke he needs to return < Luke Has A Moment. It doesn’t really fit. But if you have that deleted scene right after Luke talks about how he nearly killed Ben Solo, it takes on an entirely new meaning. You’d have to cut his brief fight with Rey, so that he seems much more defeated than furious, as well a few of his earlier lines. Some other cuts would be needed to accommodate for this of course, but I think that it could work.

It would also get rid of cutting to Leia in hyperspace for one shot only, and then immediately back to Rey and Luke, and there seems to be no clear consensus on how to approach this transition. With the change I’m thinking of, the sequence of events would be:
Luke tells Rey the truth and Rey leaves < Finn and Rose in Hyperspace with DJ < Poe finding out about Holdo’s plan < Rey being dropped off at Snoke’s Star Destroyer < Luke has a moment < Rey and Kylo in the elevator < Some antics while sneaking around Snoke’s ship < Luke communicating with Leia via The Force < Poe’s Mutiny. Then everything else is in the same order as the theatrical cut until Kylo declares himself Supreme Leader. After that moment we get Luke and Yoda’s scene. Obviously these are all just ideas floating around my head, and I’m sure once you actually sit down to edit the film, things will be different, but the general idea still stands.
