RedLetterMedia's Revenge of Nadine [TPM 108 pg Resp. [RotS Review+RotS Preview+ST'09 Reveiw+Next Review Teaser+2002 Interview+AotC OutTakes+Noooooo! Doc.+SW Examiner Rebuttal+AotC Review+TPM Review]
Time

I was a little disappointed with RedLetterMedia's coverage of ROTS. He did a good job but he generalized too many things that I was hoping he would elaborate on like he did in episodes II and I. I was dying waiting to see what he would say about Darth Vader saying Noooooooo!!!! But he just jumps right past it with no comment at all. Maybe he felt like there was enough comments on that already. I think he does speak to the audience that keeps up on the prequel hating discussion and tries to add things that he feels hasn't been discussed heavily yet.

It's nice to see the different styles of reviewing people do of these movies on the internet. RedLetterMedia likes to goof around and be kind of silly and talk about the movie more than review it. Confused Matthew likes to review movies in a more formal manner, and Chefelf likes to review things from beginning to end and make jokes about each moment he didn't like.

I liked the comparison of Citizen Cane, I was thinking he was going to use the Godfather to compare how to do a convincing movie about a good man falling from grace compared to ROTS, but Citizen Cane is probably a better choice to do the comparison with.

Worst Edit Ideas
Time

I know I said I was never coming back, but seeing this thread made me have to ask Davnes007 if it is okay if I copy or use similar footage from his Star Wars Holiday Special 2010?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7KL78pbhA4

It is the part from 8:59 to 9:39

I'm planning on making an edit of the movies called "The Star Wars Trilogy Super Special Edition" and the tag line will be "and you thought the changes to the special edition and '04 DVDs were bad..." As you can imagine, I'm making the DVD versions even worse. I'm screwing up the colors more, I'm making Luke's lightsaber colors even more inconsistent, but Davnes007 beat me to the punch with that idea in his Holiday Special. I'm going to include a cut-out of Boba Fett included even more pointlessly throughout the films and a bunch of other stuff. So Davnes007, is it okay if I copy your idea of Luke's lightsaber changing colors throughout shots?

That's it, I'm leaving! First I try to butter up to you guys and you say I'm weak. Then I stand by my principles and you tell me I'm an idiot. I done talking to you guys. I'll tell you how I really think. There is nothing wrong with my posts. You guys are being picky a-holes. I didn't realize originaltrilogy is a gated community of snobs. I'm communicating through Adywan exclusively for now on.

Goodbye forever

I agree with you totally sketchrob, Adywan could be a professor at a visual arts school easily. The amount of time/work he is doing is more than equivalent to a bachelor's degree is some arts. The Wampa he is doing sounds like a combination of puppetry and animatronics. IDK if it is going to be all puppetry or a combination of both. I can't imagine it being all anamatronically controlled. IDK what skills Adywan has in that? He hasn't proven that he has skills in that field yet to my knowledge. That's what is getting me nervous. I think Adywan's edits are a great example of how to use computers as a tool and not as the means to create art and he uses all of his tools at his disposal.

"Really, the fact he's already made SWR is proof enough he knows his craft, you on the other hand I have doubts."

What craft do you think I'm trying to prove? I didn't know I was trying to prove a craft?

"Oh, and welcome to the forum"

Thanks, I was waiting for somebody to say that.

Good point Chainsaw, hopefully Adywan will say something to reinstate my confidence on this. I think he has the skills to make a convincing still image of a Wampa, but to make one move convincingly, idk, that takes a lot of skill in the motion control department. People go to school for that stuff. Adywan seems to be very good at teaching himself, but I'm nervous thinking about how he is going to get its arm to move on screen in continuity to its body and head move at the same time. Maybe he is way ahead of me on this. I'll go back and see what I can find on this, but so far I haven't seen any images of it besides the fur.

I posted that more because I wanted to get an update from Adywan on the Wampa and not to discourage him from doing it because I'm not in favor of it, "because it's taking too looong." I apologize for sounding insensitive. I'm being very patient with Adywan, I don't care if it takes him another 2 years. I just get a feeling this Wampa isn't going to work out after all the effort he puts into it. I am aware of the money and effort that has gone into that Wampa so far, but that is part of film making, sometimes you have to scrap things you've put a lot of effort into to get the project done on budget and in a timely manner, not that I care about the time part. I want the Wampa to work just as much as anyone, but I don't think it's going to look any better than the one already there.

I've heard about this Sevb kid, Adywan told me about him, but I haven't noticed him. He sounded like an annoying prick that doesn't appreciate the effort put into this (sorry for sounding hypocritical here).

I don't take back my comment about Vader saying "No Luke, I am your father." I really do want Adywan to make Darth Vader say it that way. I was actually surprised the way you guys took that one. I thought you guys would be in agreement with me on that. I don't even think Adywan took that one seriously. But I suppose it's better to correct misquotes than to correct the movie to misquotes ;-).

I never liked Han's "I know" line after Leia says "I love you" either. I think George Lucas was right having Han say "I love you too." "I know" is too cheesy. I heard the line was filmed, do you have access to that line Adywan? Perhaps you could replace it with that?

By the way, if you believed what I just said, you just got punk'd.

I emailed Adywan asking him if he could modify his DVD label for ANH Revisited and he said he no longer has the separate layers of the label to be centered on the disks according to the lightscribe template shown above. As you can see in the images shown above, the lightscribe template is smaller than the original size of the disk. So the lettering of on the cover is off center and slightly cut off. Does anybody know how to modify this so the text is centered?

One thing that always bugged me about ESB. Growing up in school long before I saw ESB or even knew which movie it happens in, I often heard the line "Luke I am your father." It is probably the most quoted line in movie history. It's probably the most misquoted line in movie history too. The first time I saw ESB I was expecting Darth Vader to say it like that but instead he says "No, IIIII am your father." Adywan, could you insert the word "Luke" in his line right after he says "No"? So instead he says, "No Luke, I am your father."

The unmasking of Vader and Richard Marquand
Time

I thought Harrison Ford did a good job performing in Jedi. I don't know why people think he "phoned it in" or lost his touch in ROTJ, he was just fine in my opinion. He seemed just like he always did in the OT. I never found Harrison to be that great of an actor in the OT to begin with. He's pretty good, but he never came off a believable as Mark Hamil did as "Luke Skywalker" or Alec Guinness did as "Obi Wan" (Old Ben) or Carrie Fisher as "Leia". In fact, I would say he was one of the least of the actors in the OT. Not to say he was bad, but I thought the OT was a well acted movie series to begin with. Or maybe I've been desensitized by the PT too much?

Spielberg back in that day was still a good director. Sure his recent works are nothing spectacular specifically "Worlds" and "Skull". I haven't seen that one movie that he shot on film recently, what movie was that? ROTJ's script was lacking specifically between Luke and Darth Vader. Lucas is into too much repetitive dialog. Many of the lines spoken by Darth Vader in ESB were repeated in ROTJ and the Emperor dialog was repeated in similar ways too many times too. I think Speilberg could have ironed that out and given the movie up until the end battle a faster pace and more going on. The first few times I watched ROTJ I was bored in some areas. I never got that feeling with ANH or ESB.

The unmasking of Vader and Richard Marquand
Time

I remember a time before TPM when the "unmasking" of Darth Vader was kind of an unpopular decision made by George Lucas in ROTJ. But after TPM came out, Jar Jar Binks wiped the memories of everybody who had a problem with that it seems. Today I think it was handled perfectly, but as a child I remember being kind of disappointed about who was behind the mask. I know there is no logic to it, but as a child I was thinking that it would be a scary monster. When I was young I thought he didn't need the mask, but just used it to hide his scary face. I expected him to look like Darth Maul or a man with Grey skin, yellow eyes, etc. For awhile I wished Luke would have never removed the mask and it would remain a mystery.

One thing I wish could have been changed about the movie is who directed it. Steven Spielberg would have done a better job than this Richard Marquand. I heard that he didn't even do much directing on the movie. Somebody took his place early on when they found out he wasn't a good fit for the job. When I watched video of Richard Marquand on the set of ROTJ directing from "Returning to Jedi", he looked stiff as a rock and scared out of his mind. The guy didn't even look like he knew anything about star wars, liked it or knew what he was doing. He looked baffled by the whole thing. Does anybody know what the story with Richard Marquand directing ROTJ was all about?

I really wish Steven Spielberg could have directed it. He was George's first choice for ROTJ. I don't know why George couldn't use him just because he was in a film union? What is the story on why Steven Spielberg couldn't direct ROTJ? Having Irvin Kershner come back would have been even better. But it sounds like Irvin didn't come back because he couldn't take all of George's controlling ways during ESB. Am I correct?

Here are two reviews from 1999 of ROTJ from imdb.com.

Has anyone else noticed a certain trend ..., 9 September 1999
8/10
Author: Spleen from Canberra, Australia

`Star Wars' ended with Luke Skywalker's assault on the Death Star. We followed Luke and Luke alone. `The Empire Strikes Back' split the action at the end into two streams: we saw Leia and Han fighting for their freedom, and Luke Skywalker confronting Vader. `Return of the Jedi' split things three ways: Endor, Death Star, rebel fleet. And what do you know, `The Phantom Menace' divides the final action into FOUR streams. If this trend continues things will start to get silly. They already have.

It's tempting to view `Return of the Jedi' as a sour omen of things to come. Lucas hired Richard `"whatever you say, George"' Marquand to direct his third Star Wars movie, which accounts for the general sluggishness. He threw in pointlessly cuddly Ewoks. Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher abandon the more adult romance of the previous film in order to play unconvincing second fiddles to all these furry things. While John Williams's score retains its power, his source music is pretty weak. Compared to the first two movies the dialogue is bland. (It would get much blander come 1999.) The story is an unimaginative re-hash of earlier work, except for Lucas's idea that bigger is better. If the rebels have to do THREE things at once to travel INSIDE the EVEN BIGGER, DEADLIER Death Star with MORE SHIPS THAN EVER BEFORE in order to achieve an EVEN GREATER victory, it will surely make things more exciting - right? Whatever you say, George.

Special effects are particularly disappointing. They're actually weaker than in the first two movies, with unbelievable - and I mean, literally unbelievable - muppets strewn all over the landscape. (The blue vinyl elephant thing in Jabba's court gets my vote for most ridiculous alien.) Oddly enough the digital adjustments of 1997 only made matters worse. The computer-generated pop singer Lucas created looks every bit as fake as that stupid animal with the big lips it replaced - it merely looks fake in a different way; and, furthermore, the presence of the computer creatures makes the puppets look more fake than they would otherwise look, and vice versa. Perhaps it doesn't matter very much. The special effects, creature effects, costumes AND art direction, had all deteriorated, with or without digital vandalism.

Yet despite all this the release of `The Phantom Menace' makes `Return of the Jedi' look better than ever. The chief difference between the two is that the latter, unlike the former, has a reason for being made in the first place. The story begun in the first two movies needed a conclusion. It DIDN'T need a prologue. If the conclusion stumbles a bit, well, we must take the rough with the smooth: obviously the story had to end SOME way. In any event, `Return of the Jedi' isn't a bad movie. It coasts on the energy of the early movies, but it gets where it's going. If you've just watched the earlier films this one still brings a lump to the throat. Yes, it could have been much better. Be thankful it wasn't worse.

A touching end, 11 May 1999
9/10
Author: ladysolo

I'm sick of people whining about Ewoks! True, they're not the best thing that ever happened to Star Wars, but they DID happen, so deal with it! Besides, they ARE cute, and I don't care if they're marketable. Yubb Nubb!

This movie always leaves me in tears. It's perfect. The end could not be better. I'm excited for The Phantom Menace because it will suddenly throw the focus of the whole story from Luke to Anakin. I love how he is revealed at the end - it would be too unresolved any other way. So those of you who are complaining that Vader's helmet was removed, take a moment to think about it. It's very effective. Vader, the man who hid behind a mask for 20 years, is finally revealed as a sick-looking man. He is not entirely machine - he's vulnerable.

I don't know how the casting director happened to pick such good actors in A New Hope. They all do so well. They are believable characters. Hamill does an excellent job with his dramatic character development. Fisher does a fine job being a female role model (I mean, come on! She killed Jabba even when so many others had failed!). Harrison Ford - need I say more?

The music is once again brilliant. It's so very touching and significant when you can pick out character themes at different parts of the movie. The best climax is when Luke shouts "NOOO!" and jumps out to fight his father in the Final Battle. John Williams is nothing short of a genius! What an amazing man!

Already, the movie has so much more meaning for me because of Episode I. I can't wait to finally see it in the theatres (CAN I WAIT???) and then watch the original trilogy yet again.

Bravo!

Lets get off topic again and talk about the prequels...

Just kidding!

Sorry, it's just I sent Adywan those questions awhile ago through email and he didn't get back to me and I didn't know his means of communication so I thought maybe this thread was the only way to contact him. He didn't make a thread on his prequel edits yet so I thought it would be OK to ask it here, I'll be more careful in the future. I didn't realize you guys were so gung-ho about staying on topic.

But to stay on topic, I would like to add that I think it is a great idea to have multiple Imperial Walkers shooting the shield generator at the same time. It makes more sense why the Empire sent many down there. I was thinking, maybe for the shot where you see the maximum firepower lasers firing at the shield generator, making them green to indicate green is the strongest firepower as that laser is used for the Death Star, Star Destroyers, and the Tie Fighters. But like was mentioned earlier, the blue background might interfere with that so if that is a problem, fine.

How did you think things would play out in episode III?
Time

In my opinion, Anakin's turn to the darkside wasn't absolutely terrible, it could have been worse, but we were expecting a lot more. There's really no feasible logic why Anakin turns to the darkside. His reasons are elementary and that is putting it generously. Why couldn't Anakin see that Palpatine was manipulating him? I was always hoping Anakin's turn to the darkside would be a much more complicated and convincing process.

I mean, out of all the reasons Anakin could have turned to the darkside, Lucas chooses the easiest and most cliche. Saving his wife from death which Palpatine was fabricating in his mind? In how many millenniums of stories told by man has plot points like that been used to justify anger? Getting pissed off at the jedi because they won't let him be a master, whining about it like a little child?

Before the prequels, I imagined Anakin Skywalker as being a smart, strong, mature man with a hint of rebellion and immaturity in him. But what comes off on screen is just unconvincing and amateur. Lucas makes the darkside a pathological on and off switch in one's mind that makes you go from normal to going on killing sprees in a heartbeat for no good reason. I always thought of the darkside as a more subtle thing that doesn't make you pure evil for no reason. Darth Vader in the OT never occurred to me as an out of control man who would be suckered into killing anyone over premonitions of his wife dying and lies. He struck me as a very complicated man with many shades of anger, guilt, and resistance on good inside of him all though the OT.

Padme's death was something that I thought would be partially Anakin's fault as well as the jedi's and Palpatine probably should have not been involved in it. Why would Anakin be loyal to him if he was pulling the strings on Padme's death?

Episode III makes him out like a man with no conscience. Giving him the orange eyes was kind of cool, but it makes him out like a pure evil man. Anakin should never have been seen as a pure evil man. The orange eyes looks cool on Palpatine, but I thought the orange eyes should have remained a characteristic unique to him, just like shooting lightning bolts from his hands. No one else should have had that characteristic, seeing other characters have that characteristic just cheapened his image.

On a unrelated subject, today I saw Back to the Future in a theater! They were showing the movie in limited release at AMC theaters around the USA today and this past Saturday.

How did you think things would play out in episode III?
Time

Unlike a lot of Star Wars fans, I didn't read any of the books or novels or EU stuff nor did I try to find out what would happen in episode III through other means. So seeing the movie for the first time was a pretty big surprise to me. There were many things in the movie that I was hoping to see happen differently as well as many things that I was hoping would get resolved, but didn't. The first thing that stuck out in my mind was the final battle of Obi Wan against Anakin. I was hoping to see that take place on Degobah. The reason why is I always thought there was more to that scene in "the cave" than what was let on in ESB and there would be a moment sometime either in ROTJ (before I saw ROTJ) or the prequels where they go back to that cave and show more relevance to why Luke had that premonition in there. Before episode III, I thought that cave was the location of Anakin and Obi Wan's duel and just beyond that point where Luke sees ghost Vader was a cavern of flowing lava where Anakin falls to his doom and gets burnt, needing the suit. But then I thought, why would Yoda go into exile there if Anakin had been there? The plot would have to be worked around for that to make sense. Luke sensed a disturbing presence there because he had a subconscious feeling that was where Darth Vader once was and he was linked to him in some way.

The second thing that happened unexpectedly to me is how Vader got the suit. I had theories, some didn't even involve being burnt at all. I thought maybe he loses all his hair and needs the suit due to radiation overexposure. Lucas seems to always like to have lightsaber battles over massive chasms above nuclear reactors. Maybe Anakin falls too close to a nuclear reactor? I actually kind of liked that idea better, because being burnt like that would have made him blind and deaf. I don't know if heavy radiation exposure damages your eyes and hearing?

The third thing is Padme's death. I don't think anybody here liked the idea of her "losing the will to live." Before episode III, I always thought Padme would die a few to several years later after she has the babies and is separated from Anakin. That was the logical idea because Leia remembers her and said she died when she was very young. I think we interpret that as being 4-6 years old. Not right at birth. I thought the jedi would separate Padme from Anakin/Darth Vader when he starts turning to the darkside. The jedi lie to her telling her he died, but Anakin/Darth Vader goes searching for her and finds her years later. When he finally sees her again Padme is shocked to see him in the monstrously Darth Vader suit and she dies of shock. I think that would have been a lot cooler and deep than what we saw on screen. In order to do that though they would have needed another movie almost since the star wars movies traditionally have not jump cut years later and I don't think time jumps are in the style of the movies. That is why I think more of the episode III plot could have been fit into episode II plot making more room for stuff like this in the third movie. And they easily could have moved episode II story material into episode I. While I don't think episode I is as bad of a movie as some people, the movie hardly accomplishes anything worth mentioning in the continuity of the overall story. Like what many people have said, you could have fit episode I's story into the opening crawl of episode II. Hell, episode II too.

I have more to say, but this is all I will post for now. I did briefly search this forum to see if anything was similar enough to this but couldn't find anything specific enough.
