Geez, I don't think it was done seamlessly at all, and it's something that's always annoyed me.  He visibly retconned the scene in Lord of the Rings by saying that The Hobbit was written by Bilbo, and that the original version was a lie induced by the influence of the ring.  That was seamless.  But when he went back and changed the scene to the "real" version, that totally fucked everything up and was completely stupid and invalidated his own explanation.  What was he thinking?!

EDIT:  Oh, but in general, I take changing books just as seriously as I take changing movies.  If I ever get my novel published, I will have it contractually say that the text can never be altered after the first printing, even if something as small a typo or two manages to sneak past the editor or some future book contradicts a plot point.  Just leave it alone.

Who is Ignoring You, and Who are You Ignoring? (was: Who is Ignoring You? (was: Hello all, I'm back!))

Maybe someday...

Anyway, this is the thread where we've been talking about ignore lists, right? I can't remember, and I don't have the time to check. I just did my glance at mine, and someone is actually ignoring me! Biff Tannen! My good buddy Biff Tannen has betrayed me! Sigh. I don't know how to feel about this...

I starting reading/posting in the forums here to 1) Find like minded SW fans and hear them voice and reconfirm my opinions and 2) Find unlike minded SW fan's, hear their opinions, and more importantly, have them help me understand why they hold those opinions.  Now I also come here to 3) have a good time with my virtual friends and 4) insinuate that Gaffer is, in fact, a beautiful woman (which he is!).

And may I submit to you that the main reason I find myself coming here lately is to read you tell me what a pretty girl I am.  "I feel pretty, oh, so pretty..." =P

A question for blu-ray owners.

Well, I'll tell you why someone would want to disable that.  My new computer's DVD software (well, one of them) does always remember the location of every disc I play.  When I rented Birth of a Nation, the extras disc was pretty badly scratched up.  It got to a part where it wouldn't play, but I couldn't do anything about it because every time I would put the disc back in, it would go straight back to the part.  I finally just had to open it in VLC to watch it at all.  I wish I knew how to disable it at will.

Okay, I get where you're coming from.  I don't completely agree, but I certainly see what you mean.  But based off of that, I do have another question.  You pretty much answered my last question that you believe that the team is still the team no matter who plays in it, as in the Phillies from the early 20th century are still the Phillies now.  I'm curious if you feel that way about all organizations (probably don't, but I'd just like to throw it out there for fun).  Like bands, for instance.  If "The Beatles" reformed with all new members, would you still consider them The Beatles?  The Beach Boys have gone through a lot of different configurations.  Are they all The Beach Boys, or do you consider any one of those configurations more The Beach Boys than the others?  And if yes to any of those questions, what makes sports teams different?

Wow, this thread has caught on!  Thanks for all the different views, guys.  I actually really enjoyed Anchorhead's initial post on this, and it did make sense.  Not enough to make me a sports fan, but... ^_~

Anyway, I do have a question for Warbler.  If it seems like I'm picking on your posts, I'm not.  It just seems you say the things that make me want to start a discussion.  It's about the whole "supporting a team because you live there," thing, which I admit is something I've never really gotten either.  Yes I can certainly see where you're coming from, especially given the mentality of "the team represents me."  Maybe it's just because I see sports fans as being big into stats (not to mention winning) and pulling for their team, that it makes more sense to me to get a good idea of which team in the league you truly consider to be "the best" and root for it.  Just rooting for a team because they're in the same general vacinity almost seems lazy to me (not that I'm calling you lazy, but that's just the way it's felt to me).  I say this particularly because I consider a team representative of the individuals who make up that team.  If a team has long since lost all the players, changed managers... are they the same team anymore?  If you admit that the team you're rooting for sucks to the point that you don't even like them anymore, or that the players make you want to throw a brick at your TV, while all your favorite players from your home team have been traded to a different team...?  Well, I'm sure you see where I'm going with this.  I know you're using hyperbole and don't really mean it, but to label someone a "traitor" for daring to like a "foreign" team just seems silly, especially considering the high possibility of people living in different regions of the country throughout their lifetime.  Are they supposed to just give up their previous team and start rooting for whatever team they happen to live near at any given time?

And I certainly see how watching the Olympics you take a bit of satisfaction in seeing America do well.  I rarely watch the Olympics either, but maybe I'm just more of an individualist in that sense.  If I see an athlete I like, think is really good, or just somehow hooks me, I'm not going to care what country they come from, I'm going to root for that athlete.  After all, it's just a game!

In an attempt to no longer hijack Warbler's thread about college bowl playoffs (was that right?), I've noticed in my time here that we have members who are sports fanatics and members who... really just don't get all the hype.  Rather than turn every new sports-based topic into that, I thought it would be better for us all to just dive into a new thread and discuss the matter here.  Maybe it'll be fun.  So with that said, I'll start with Warbler's last post on the subject, as I think he said some pretty interesting things I would like to address.

I don't what to say.   To me,  watching sports is fun.  When you are talking about a team sport, the team represents some entity,  be it a city, a highschool, a college, or even a nation(the Olympics).  Its really not about pride in the 18-22 year olds, its about pride in what they represent.   When they win,  your city/school/country wins, you win.  When they lose, you lose.  When you cheer on a team for your whole life, after your father and grandfather did as well, you tend to get attached to the team.  You tend to live and die by them(not literally, but figuratively).   When the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, my family opened champagne to celebrate.   When they lost in 1993 via Mitch William's  pitch to Joe bleeping Carter,  believe it or not, I cried.  It can get to you.  Can it go too far?  you bet.  A example of this would be the people in Texas who treat highschool football like its the NFL, and put way too much pressure on the kids.    It sounds like your problems aren't will football per say, but with all sports.

First of all, it's interesting to get this insight.  I'd like to go on record as a general nonsporter that I didn't create this thread to go, "Oh, wow, look at those stupid sports fans.  Why do they take such stupid things so seriously?"  I'm genuinely interested in the perspective and analysis of the culture, even if I'm not interested in the culture itself.

So from there, it's pretty cool to hear families passing down traditions and having fun and being emotionally invested in something.

At the same time, I'd hate to pick apart the wording (for fear of getting into semantics), but Warb described things so interestingly, I have to ask about them.  "When they win... you win.  When they lose... you lose."  Why?  Okay, I kinda get this.  Like if we were to get an awesome OT release, we'd feel like we won.  When Lucasfilm pisses on our side of the fandom, it feels like we lose.  I do kinda get that.  But how do sports teams represent me like a government entity represents me?  Where exactly does that come from?  If I lived in Marin County, could I say that George Lucas represents me without getting laughed at?  Probably not.  So why am I being told that, if I live in this town, this sports team represents me?  What do I win when they win?  What do I lose when they lose?  Unlike an awesome release of the OT, if City Name Animal team wins or loses a game, what does it matter?  They'll just play another one in a week.  When you say it's pride in what they represent, what exactly do you mean?  Again, are you saying they represent me/my town/my family?  Again, how?  By that logic, couldn't a really popular anime club do the same thing?  I mean, it is all the same thing, so I suppose my big question is... out of all hobbies, interests, games... why are sports treated as something so important?

Oh, and just so you know, I don't have a "problem" with sports.  I've never been a huge follower of them, but I don't dislike them.  I never played an official team growing up, but I would play football, baseball, basketball with friends growing up.  It was a game, just like any other game.  I even have a couple of sports-induced scars on my body (one from football, one from basketball), so I'm not unfamiliar with the games or the enjoyment one can receive from partaking in them.  But I can just take it or leave it.  It's never had a big impact on me.  Like I said in the other thread, I didn't start to get annoyed with it until I got into college, and the obsession with it just became impossible to ignore/tolerate.  And it was at that point, even though I had only been marginally interested before, that I began to try to assess what the big deal was and found myself stymied.

In general, that's all I have to say right now.  I hope this can actually yield some discussion and not, "Well, if you don't get it, you don't get it."  I'd like to hear people's stories, their perspectives, from both sides.

the orange isn't just for the football team,  that is your college's colors.   All your sports team wear those colors.   I can't see how stores being empty on Saturday would be an annoyance.  As for the Sportstalk,  if you don't like it, don't listen.   Surely there must be other radio stations to listen to.   4 hours a day is nothing.  In Philly,  we two stations that talk Philly sports 24/7.  What's wrong with people  being nicer and friendlier.   As for putting your pride in a bunch of 18-22 year olds,  I guess if you aren't a sports fan, you wouldn't understand.

You're right.  I don't understand.  Like doubleofive says, people just take it too seriously.  It's a game where people throw a little ball around.  Not saying that's a bad thing, but, really, what's the big deal?  Why base so much around it?  Haha, C3PX needs to get into this thread a bit more.  I love his "annoyed at sports" rants.  I think even if you're a sports fan, you can't help but find them funny.

But think about it this way.  Sports is absolutely no different from being a fan of anything else, be it video games, anime, or Star Wars (but I'm sure lots of sports fans would take offense at being lumped in with such "nerds" but it's true).  Yet, for some reason, it's much more culturally acceptable to be a fan of sports than any of those other things.  Imagine if your local Wendy's sign read, "Support the New Dragon Box Release!" or if people rioted in the streets when the horrible 2004 Star Wars DVDs came out... ha, actually, the world needs to be more like this come to think of it.  I like the sound of that!

And again, sorry to hijack your thread, but, honestly, it does intrigue me quite a bit, and I wouldn't mind opening a fun discussion about it.

Being a student at the University of Alabama for two and a half years has made me loathe college football and the whole stupid subculture it perpetuates, at least down here anyway.

Haha, thank you!  College did the same thing to me!  I was never a big sports person to begin with, but being constantly submerged in football culture nonstop made me hate hate hate hate hate it so much!  It's a sentiment I continue to carry even though I graduated a year and a half ago!  Aaaaah!  It's all just so annoying!

Sorry to hijack your thread, Warb.  I'll let you get back to... whatever the hell it was you were talking about.  ^_~
