Return of the Jedi - your opinion?

The Ewoks are a big part of it, but there's much more to it than that. The plot is tired--another Death Star, another space battle and escaping a chain reaction, another stolen plan, and another cantina with more puppets. The dialog isn't as good as Empire either, and the character relationships are uninteresting, especially Han who goes through the motions and Leia who doesn't do a whole lot. Also, Leia being Luke's brother is infinitely stupid. Add in the Ewoks taking up almost 1/3 of the film and you've got a disappointment. It just doesn't have the originality and sense of urgency the other two did.

However, there's lots to love about the film. The Jabba sequence is fun, and the sail barge battle is right out of an Errol Flynn movie and is one of the most entertaining action scenes in the trilogy. The visual effects are jaw-dropping, probably the peak of pre-digital technology IMO, and of course you have a great John Williams score. But its just great to have the characters together again. You grow to love them over the past two films and its a small treat just to see them as an ensemble again, even if they are only briefly together. The Emperor adds a new twist to things, but the real standout is Luke Skywalker's story. Its very, very compelling stuff, especially with Vader, where they mainly talk instead of fight, which was much more interesting in some ways, and Mark Hamill really carries the film.

All in all, it's easy to see why people like this film the least. But that doesn't mean it's not likeable. It's frustrating that it wasn't as good as the others but they set the bar so high that this is still better than a lot of movies even when its the disappointment of the trilogy, and is a worthy piece of entertainment.

There.  I couldn't put it better myself.

Aw, The Onion?  If Obama had really gone on record saying those quotes, my respect for him would have risen a thousand-fold!  Gotta love a guy with a sense of humor about nuclear armageddon over sports!

Oh, whoops.  A bit late on that.  I'll shush and enjoy the band.

Edmund Stanislaus Rumowicz.  Yeah, I can see people misspelling that.

Had you opened your video reviews saying your name, I would I figured it a joke. What do your friends call you?

Don't I usually sign my name in my PMs?  Isn't it written in my profile?  (Is it?  It used to be...)  Oh.  Nope.  Not since the software shift.

Anyway, I'm Lance.

You mean for the videos?  Well, there's that Wonder Woman 2009 animated film that I've been putting off doing forever even though it was one of my first ideas from before I even started doing videos.  I've had the video files from the 1943 Batman serial sitting on my computer since I made my less-than-successful music video (not sure why that didn't take off as well as I'd hoped... I thought it turned out pretty well) last June.  But for some reason, I've been in less of a superhero mood this year than last year apparently.  So I'm tempted to just continue to keep those on the backburner and just do a multi-part in-depth video series analyzing Dragon Ball story arc by story arc.  That idea is almost anathema to me as well because I feel I've been beating that horse to death lately and putting off fans who might not be into that one series.  I don't want to pigeonhole myself, but I admit that when I get an interest I sink my teeth into it for a while before I lose interest.  And I also have to admit that I've gotten a LOT of subscribers since my Dragon Box reviews have been out, and the temptations to pander to the valuable market share (*coughilliterateteenscough*) is a bit strong.  But we'll see.  Again take note of the amazing, melting computer.  Also take note that I have one of them checkbook things, but they cease to be impressive when in the hands of a part-time fashion retail worker... =P

EDIT:  Oh, and because I just bought this damned thing last February!

Ha!  I should just find some new Star Wars thing to nitpick.  It's been a long time since I've done anything with that topic.

I did have a very-rushed, "Oh, crap, I forgot it was April Fool's Day today, I have to capitalize on it!" video, but I quickly abandoned it.  Just wasn't very good.  Hopefully there's at least one piece of ridiculous footage I can recycle somewhere down the line.

Haha, a Gaffer Tape indeed!  Yeah, well, first of all, I thought it would be fun.  And second, since I was just out of college, I wanted a chance to edit again, which I love to do, and I wanted to keep my skills sharp.  So I just went with and wanted to see what would happen.  And, yeah, for my first video, I just dusted off a thread from a ways back that I wrote on these boards.  So, yeah, man, everything's, like, connected and stuff!

So that's really why I had things like the "Gotham City/Santa Fe" montage in my Batman and Robin video last year.  I'm afraid I haven't been as ambitious lately, mainly because my computer just seems to be less inclined to tolerate it with each successive video.  Remember how I said that my computer overheated right before the show?  That's because I was listening to the commentary on Back to the Future while simultaneously watching this thread.  How dare I?!  How could a computer be expected to put up with that kind of torture?!  So, yeah...

Haha, yes, I have a bachelor of arts in theatre performance that I'm currently not using in any real capacity. =P  Well, I'd wanted to be an actor long before I ever saw Star Wars, but I suppose it wouldn't be outside of the realm of possibility that Star Wars was one of the first films that got me interested in the study of film.  Ironically, it was because of those Leonard Maltin/George Lucas interviews that came packaged with the "Faces" VHS set, which was my first exposure to the movies.  Ironic in the fact that it's not exactly an accurate portrayal of the history at all.  But I was nine.  I lapped it up then.  But those were sillier times.

Quite alright, quite alright.  Embrace the unexpected I suppose.

But, no, I can't say I'd ever really lurked many other Star Wars boards before.  I might have looked at the official site's boards a couple of times, but got disgusted and went away.  As for TF.n, I probably heard about it through here.  So maybe that's backwards of me.  Not sure how I came across this place.  Probably searched for "angry Star Wars malcontents," and this was the first thing that came up, I suppose.

Most likely because of time zone issues.  As with most great internet discoveries, it was a very late night when I finally bit the bullet and joined the forum.  I had been lurking since the previous fall, due to the hype and backlash of the '04 OT DVDs, but it was after I saw ROTS for the first time that I just had to come here and start bitching.  So I'm sure it was June 2nd in a lot of parts of the world... just not mine, it seems.

EDIT:  Oh, hi, there Davnes.  We get that a lot...
