Which do you think is a better ESB plot twist? Where do you think the other one would have lead?
Time

Well, that's one of those subplots that was *mostly* cut out of the finished film, except for a few leftovers, like when Padme mentions that Obi-Wan stopped by, and Anakin says, "Obi-Wan was here?" like he was really suspicious, and then his manic ranting and raving on Mustafar ("You're with him!  You brought him here to kill meeeeeeeee!")  That kind of crap.

Well, hell, even in the continuity set up by the prequels, Vader telling Luke "Obi-Wan killed your father" could have made perfect sense.  Like someone said, Obi-Wan did chop off Anakin's limbs and sadistically left him to burn to death (to borrow from Confused Matthew), and Anakin was under the impression that Obi-Wan was banging his wife, so, from a certain point of view, I could see Vader trying to make Luke swallow the pill that Obi-Wan was evil.  And then in the next movie, Luke would have had to rationalize his loyalties, and Obi-Wan would have to prove why exactly what he did had to be done.  Hell, just from the context of the original trilogy, you could have both revelations.  You could have Vader tell Luke Obi-Wan tried to kill his father, then have Obi-Wan admit to Luke that that was indeed the case, but that he had a very good reason for dimembering Luke's lifelong hero:  that he is, in fact, Darth Vader, but Obi-Wan had been too afraid for Luke's feelings to tell him.

Let's be honest here:  all sequels bring new ideas to the table that alter how you view the original work.  The problem with Star Wars is how it's being presented.  The creator is, for some inane reason, encouraging people to watch three sequels before the original.  That's the main problem here.  If you watch the films in their proper order, you will have the original context of the original film, and, only after you've learned that, will you discover new contexts.  But if you watch three sequels first, that entirely steamrolls over the original film, and all you have left is this new version of events.  Even the back of the currently released boxset tells you right off the bat on the back of the box that Darth Vader is Luke's father.  Why?  Well, I would say that that's supposed to tie into the idiotic idea that you're supposed to watch those sequels before the original film, but even the prequel trilogy boxset gives the exact same information.  So I guess what I'm really trying to say is that George Lucas is just an idiot.

Yeah, pretty much every currently in-print version of the trilogy features what we refer to as the GOUT (George's Original Unaltered Trilogy) as a bonus disc.  These are laserdisc ports and non anamorphic (because that's the kind of respect George gives the movies that made him and his company a phenomenon), so they don't look especially wonderful, but they are as close to the originals as you're probably going to see any time soon.  Aside from the sub-par picture quality, I guess the biggest purist complaint you can have is that the sound mixes are from 1993, but it's not a drastic change.  Other than that, it's certainly watchable.  The original film even has its title crawl without the later-added "Episode IV:  A New Hope" garbage.

Anyway, stay clear of the silver and gold boxes or the slightly smaller box that has the original movie poster art (with Luke holding his lightsaber towards the heavens and Leia clinging to his leg).  Instead, if you see them individually packaged, go for the ones that say "Limited Edition" in the bar on top with the cover art being photographic recreations of classic poster art (with the actual poster art on the back) or the new slimline boxset.  Both of those releases will have the GOUT as a bonus disc.
