The Annie Angst Thread

"So why didn't he do it in ROTS then?" Hehe, I knew you were going to ask that question.

"Does anyone else but me *cringe* every time Hayden pronounces the word 'master' in the PT?" I wouldn't say cringe, but it does always sound kinda weird for some reason. I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe it's because he always sounds like he's about to cry when he says that word.

From a Certain point of View...
Time
I guess we're going to assume that, for this scenario, in terms of story and character at least, everything would have ended up the same as it is now? As in, each movie would contain the exact same plot and dialogue that they ended up containing. If that's the case, then the prequel trilogy probably wouldn't have been a hit on its own two feet. As it stands, all the prequels do is flesh out the story of the original trilogy, so they're dependent on those movies to stand. By themselves, they're not nearly as interesting. Conversely, the original trilogy can stand on its own.

Am I the only one who thinks that puppets look fake

Okay, yeah, I see where you're coming from. Believe me, I'm not going to complain about something without a good reason, and I will give credit where credit is due. I prefer the puppet Yoda, but I'm not going to say it's perfect. In that scene where Luke and Yoda are training, and Yoda gives that whole speech about the dark side, I'm just staring at him, yelling in my head, "Blink, damnit, blink!" But you can't say that puppetry isn't advanced enough to deal with eyes. All the things you mentioned with the eyes were able to be done with the Jabba the Hutt puppet.

Um, most of that post was a joke (I don't really believe that there are a thousand Stuart Freeborns, for example), but you seemed to miss the part where I did give the CG Yoda credit. The puppet Yoda simply can't match the movement of the CG Yoda in terms of the choreography of the lightsaber duels. There, I said it again, just in case you missed it the first time. I'm not even saying that they didn't do a good job on CG Yoda. He's pretty convincing. But in terms of simply looking like something that actually exists... you can't beat something that actually exists. That's my opinion, and I respect it. Geez, you didn't go off on Jedikev like that.

The only thing CG Yoda can do better is fight a lightsaber duel. Those are the only scenes that required they use a computer character. But saying that CG Yoda is as good as the puppet one? Shim, that's like saying you don't believe in faeries! As if a thousand Stuart Freeborns cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced!

I do believe in puppets! I do! I do!

Super Healing Obi-Wan!
Time
Besides the "younglings" lines and the "NOOOOOO!" that was the unintentionally funniest moment in the film. The animation just looked horrible! I know I rag on CG a lot (in fact, I just did in my last post), but most of it is relatively believable in comparison to how crappy that one shot was. I was laughing my ass off so much that I never really paid any much thought to the kind of damage that Obi-Wan would have suffered. I can let myself believe the Padme thing since it's just sand, but you guys have a point with the catwalk. It makes you almost believe Jake Lloyd's "Jedi can't be killed" line. Yeah, Obi-Wan can be crushed by a few hundred pounds of steel, but Qui-Gon can't handle one little puncture wound? ^_~

Have you ever listened to the commentary on Attack of the Clones? I swear the animators spend half the movie patting themselves on the back over their Yoda. I mean, they don't just explain how things work and are naturally proud, it's like, "See that eye movement that Yoda did there? Oh, that was so cool! I loved that! We couldn't do that with the puppet! He is so amazing!" It made me want to wretch after 15 continuous minutes of it.

Did George actually have an "original vision?"

He came up with Leia being Luke's sister on a plane trip during ROTJ pre-production for Christ's sake! He has constantly contradicted himself regarding Anakin disappearing when he died. And he wrote all of the prequels as he went along with it... Now, as I've said before, there is nothing wrong in making it up as you go, but why lie to the media claiming you're a genius who concieved 4, uh I mean 3, uh I mean 2 trilogies back in 1974?

Just wondering, is there any evidence that Lucas literally made that up on the plane ride over? Wasn't that just Mark Hammil joking with George (as in, "Did you just make that up on the plane ride over?")?

Well, yeah, some puppet do look fake. Take the ones from Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood. The King and Queen serve their purposes well, but I'd never see them on the street and believe they were real. Of course, I'd never see them on the street at all (unless I'd taken some bad death sticks ^_~). As for the Star Wars puppets, which is what I assume you're talking about... well, some of them looked kind of fake, too. They all have their individual problems. But the two main Star Wars puppets... Jabba the Hutt and Yoda... well, I have yet to see a CG rendering that does either of them justice.

Hmm, I think Shimraa is talking about me. Thanks for clearing that up, guys, as there is definitely a fine line between spoonfeeding and fleshing out.

Did George actually have an "original vision?"

I can't say he never had an original vision, because, obviously, the first plan he had was technically his "original vision". Whatever it was got lost in the translation due to success, greed, and no one there (like Gary Kurtz) to keep him from doing whatever whimsical thing he wanted to. And, yeah, most of the stuff you wrote are direct results of him just making up prequels as he went along and trying that whole fan service routine (like the droids, Chewbacca, and Baby Fett). I still don't see why people have problems with the whole "He wanted you to have this," line. It seems pretty clear that that's just another one of the things Ben told Luke to make him think his father was a great person. As Darth Simon and countless others have said, it's better than telling Luke, "I took this from your father after I chopped him in half and left him to die."

Haha! Those are great! Especially the charred remains action figures and the George Lucas costume! Sure to be a big hit this Halloween, I'm sure. "Want to go Trick-or-Treating as a bloody zombie?" "No. I think I'll go as someone really scary and hideous... George Lucas!!!" "Made by Kenner. George Lucas Costume... Because Nothing is Scarier Than Changing History."

A script for a new scene in ANH
Time
Well, I cringe at the thought that people will see them for the first time in numerical order. But you are right that the father revelation will surprise no one, no matter what order they're watched in, simply because it's become so cliched that even non-Star Wars fans know that Darth Vader is Luke's father. It's something that's parodied and revived all over the place, so it's not the same kind of original shock that it was 25 years ago.

Whoops, sorry. You were talking about how Vader knew. So, yeah, you have a point, but I think it's one of those things that doesn't have to be spelled out for us. But I seriously doubt, that in any version, people will be confused as to how Vader knows. It's spelled out enough already.

1. The crawl... "obsessed with finding young Skywalker."
2. "The Rebels are there... and I'm sure Skywalker is with them."
3. "We have a new enemy: Luke Skywalker." or, if you must...
4. "I am certain that the young Rebel that destroyed the Death Star is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker."

So by the time Vader does reveal who he is, the audience really isn't left wondering, "How did he know that?"

Question...
Time
If I didn't already own the 2004 set, if the originals were released, I would definitely not buy the SSE. The only reason I got this set to begin with was because I was not yet familiar with these boards and thought it was the only way I could get the movies on a format that wouldn't wear out. And, at the time I pre-ordered, I didn't know that the alterations would be even more extensive than the ones in the '97 edition, so I figured, "Kinda Star Wars is better than no Star Wars at all."
