EDIT: You know what? Nevermind. You're just not worth it.

But, by the way, Nien Nunb speaks an actual African language.  Has that ever pulled you out of the movie?  Have you ever spent serious time contemplating why there are Africans in space?  Or did you just accept it?

Hehe - too late!
Next time, read the post you're replying to, then maybe you won't have to get embarassed and delete your comment.

If you really feel that compelled to flatter yourself, fine.  But I stand firmly by everything I wrote, and I have no reason to be embarrassed that you rambled in response to it.  The only thing I'm embarrassed about is being naive enough to defend you when you first started posting here.  That's something I'd be happy to facepalm over.  I only deleted my comment because I realized it was useless to attempt to have a polite and intelligent conversation with someone who so richly deserves to get kicked in his pretentious e-nuts (thank you, Frinky!).  But, see, now I know better, so from now on I'll no longer bother.  'Kay?

Then you probably haven't paid attention.

And now I roll my eyes at you.  I was tempted not even to read the rest of your post after that insulting of a start...  So thanks...

So if you've ever wondered why everybody's complaining about the Neimoidians, but hardly anyone gets offended by Vader saying "thy bidding", the above might be the reason.

It's become an OT.com joke now, but I have to say, with a straight face... sounds like a double standard to me.  That and a completely localized mindset that sees itself as neutral and everything else as foreign.  At that point, the burden is on your (generally speaking) limited scope, not on the work.

I'd say this applies even more to foreign languages, and ACCENTS, than dialects.

Um, what?  Accents and dialects are the same thing.  Although I do certainly agree that dialects make for easy characterization.  That's not the issue here.  It's whether it's supposedly "jarring" to not sound American.  Your following list of examples right here prove that it's not, as they're used time and again successfully to convey certain things.  The only thing that gets people's panties in a wad is when those dialects are used to portray negative things, at which point they need a firm dose of "get the hell over it."

twooffour, your argument against dialects makes no sense to me. See, the thing is, EVERYBODY has a dialect of some sort. Even if you stuck everyone with the same "American" sound... guess what, that's still a dialect! The only people who refer to "American" as "no accent" are Americans! Everybody has to has to have some sort of speaking pattern. It's inevitable. And if you can accept that everyone in space can sound like an American, why can't you accept that they can sound like any other Earthly nationality? Why is it that space farers sounding like Americans is totally realistic, but space farers sounding Asian completely blows the suspension of disbelief? Either you can accept all of it, or you can't accept any of it, but it doesn't make any sense to criticize one and not the other because it's doing exactly the same thing either way: giving an Earth dialect to non-Earth people.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

The six movies are really alike. So either it's your cup of tea or it isn't. It's like your the mother of twins and you hate one child and love the other. It's just not fair and irrational.

I've been thinking about this one, and it really makes no sense whatsoever.  Well, I mean besides the obvious that movies aren't children (except maybe to the creator) and are not immune to criticism.  But if you really want to bring a parent/child analogy to this, I feel mine is much more accurate:

The prequels are the favorite child, while the originals are the unfavorite.  In fact, the father hates the originals so much he feels compelled to give the unfavorite plastic surgery as much and as often as possible to make him look more like his much, much more loved brother rather than just letting him be himself.  Isn't that just an extremely dysfunctional family and a really terrible father?

Also, I object to this person's referring to the original films as the "sequel movies" when that's just entirely incorrect (unless he's referring specifically to ESB and ROTJ).  The PREQUELS are the sequel movies.

Okay. I've had a terrible week. I had to spend over $600 yesterday to get my car fixed, which is money I can't afford. I had to make a big withdrawal from my savings account.  And now my computer is not functioning (again) either.  Specifically its backlight is out, so now I can't see the screen.  I really can't afford a new computer right now, so I'm attempting to (very quickly) figure out a temporary, cost-effective solution.  When my roommate and I were at Goodwill, we saw some very, very cheap flatscreen monitors, which, were, of course, gone by the time I realized I would need one.

Sooooo, my question is, is it possible to use an HDTV as an external monitor for a laptop.  And, if so, what kind of cable patching would I need to do?  A swift response if possible would be so, so, so greatly appreciated.  I have my final round entry for the Who Reviews the Reviewers contest due soon, and I'm going to be out of town starting a week from now to do crew work on a film, so I have to get it done this week. :(

RE: Xhonzi

Geez, out of everything I wrote, this is what you pick up on? I dunno. To be honest, I'm surprised I even need to explain it.  Most of it's right there in the title:

Semi-Annual:  Twice a year

Sale:  When items cost less

And it's a really, really, really big deal.  Rather than the usual setup of nicely-organized sets, bras and panties are arranged in bins on tables, marked down to exceptionally low levels, and there's a huge free-for-all.  I've heard people save up for months in anticipation for the SAS.  From what I've seen of it in the past, it's pretty crazy.  But this is the first time I'll really be in the thick of it, so, hmm, not really sure what to expect.  Don't think I've ever happened to be around a Victoria's Secret in the first couple of days of SAS.  It might be its own Black Friday.

Spielberg comments on digital alterations to his films
Time

Yes, I do get that.  I agree it would make it easier to edit, or to give them more room to edit.  It just seems, unlike with live action, is an unnecessary luxury that, in terms of the final product, wouldn't necessarily yield any better results.  Hell, it's not even necessary in live action.  Didn't Hitchcock plan and shoot only exactly what footage he would need in order to make it impossible for the studio to come in and cut it any other way than how he intended?

Anyway, to sum up, I think it's an interesting way to do it, but it seems like the costs far outweigh the benefits, and I can certainly understand why it never caught on as a method of doing special effects.

I'm sending my wife a job app ;-)
Yeah, but see, we needed the money.

Funniest thing I've read all day. Granted, that might tell you something about my day.

Segue attempt number two: Now that this thread has produced the funniest thing I've read all day, it's time for me to dampen the mood.

The good news:  I successfully taught myself to change a tire today, completely on my own!  The bad news:  I was in a position today where I was forced to teach myself how to change a tire, completely on my own.  At noon.

And it gets better.  Interestingly enough, I discovered this tire problem when I got in my car to drive to a service station because my car's been acting up lately.  Could that be considered an irony?  But, anyway, when I finally made myself mobile again and got to the service station, it turns out my car needs $600 worth of work.  Since I didn't have that kind of money in my checking account, I had to put it off until I can get some money out of my savings.  Did I mention they only accept cash?

Well, at least Victoria's Secret is working me to the bone.  I've amassed nearly 40 hours a week in both the past two weeks, and with the Semi Annual Sale starting up this coming Tuesday, that's not changing for next week either.  I have to be at work until 2:00 in the morning the night before the sale starts in order to set things up.  But maybe with all of this work, I might manage to break even... =/

Would you believe the sense of accomplishment I felt at changing my tire was the high point of my day?

This is the second job in a row I've worked at that has had them or switched to them. They basically open you a checking account, give you a kinda-sorta-debit/credit card, and deposit all of your money into it. There are a bunch of silly rules to use it, and they give you a few checks that you have to call to activate so you can cash money for yourself. There are fees if you use it a certain way. Fuck that. I already have a checking account, and since all of my bills are set to automatically be withdrawn from that, I'd rather have my money go into THAT account. The only people I could possibly see benefitting from such a system are young teenagers who don't have bank accounts and need a way to easily keep track of their earnings. Otherwise, it's not only pointless, it's needlessly complicated. I refuse to work with it.

Celebration VI
Time

I suppose that's the reason I doubt I'd have a good time there.  They wouldn't be celebrating the films I actually care about.  And if I had to tiptoe around actually talking about the films I do care about, then what's the fun in that?  Not trying to discourage your good time.  I mean, that's certainly great.  But it just makes me think that I personally wouldn't enjoy myself all too much.  And like the others have said, there doesn't really seem to be much to celebrate right now.

The most pathetic drivel about the prequels i have ever read.

Wow, easterhay, you just love to desperately try to cling to that "moral high ground" in order to make yourself sound like some kind of oppressed victim here, don't you?  As others have said, having any kind of opinion is tolerated and welcomed here.  It's being sanctimonious and smug that's looked down upon.  You seem much less interested in carrying on a conversation than you do in seeing just how far you can push people's buttons until they get mad and lash out at you, so that you can claim moral superiority and cry out ridiculous "proof" that people are just refusing to be receptive to opposing (read: your) opinions.

There is about 20 seconds more on Coruscant and about 90 seconds in the pod race. That doesn't sound like much, but pure CG eyecandy for two full minutes can be pretty tedious.

It is, but what always gets me is in the commentary track, George ADMITS that that material was cut because it buggered up the pacing.  So if he knew it didn't work (which it doesn't), WHY DID HE ADD IT BACK IN?!

I do think "plastic surgery addict" is the best analogy to describe him.
