The Empire Strikes Back Script Game
Time
I think you left out a bit there, HotRod.

Leia: So what did you have in mind for your next move?
Han: Well, if they follow standard Imperial procedure, they'll dump their garbage before hitting lightspeed, and then we just float away...
Leia: With the rest of the garbage. Then what?
Han: Well, we have to find a safe port somewhere.
Leia: Where are we?
Han: Anoat System.
Leia: Anoat System? There's not much there.

The Empire Strikes Back Script Game
Time
I knew something seemed wrong! Good going, HotRod. ^_~ But you found your own mistake, so it's cool.

Chewbacca: *growl*
3PO: No, I will not be quiet, Chewbacca. Why doesn't anyone listen to me?!
Han: The fleet's beginning to break up. Chewie, go stand by the manual release of the landing claw.
3PO: I really don't see how that is going to help. Surrender is a perfectly acceptable alternative in extreme circumstances. The Empire may be gracious enough to... blooohhhhh.
Han: Thank you.

Obi-Wan Killed Your Father!
Time
Ever since I saw Empire of Dreams, I thought what a cool idea it would have been if Obi-Wan killing Luke's father had been the big revelation instead of Darth Vader being Luke's father. Maybe this is just me reacting to what has become, after 26 years, rather too well-known and not at all surprising, but I still think it would have been cool. I see two ways this could have played out:

First of all, Vader's motivation for telling him would be to try to shatter Luke's trust in his own mentor and, in his weakened emotional state, convince him that Vader's way would be the right way, as opposed to someone who would kill his father. That motivation remains constant in both scenarios.

In the first scenario, it is taken literally and is very true. For whatever reason, Obi-Wan Kenobi killed Anakin Skywalker, who is not, in this scenario, Darth Vader at all. So Ben lied to Luke about it. There was most likely a totally justifiable reason for this, like it was an accident or an act of necessity, and Darth Vader, who was a pupil of his before he turned to evil, witnessed this. But Ben, needing Luke to fight for the cause so badly, didn't want to admit what he'd done, and, instead, put the blame on Vader, who was the cause of the suffering in the galaxy, in order to give Luke a more personal vendetta against him. But now Luke's trust in his mentor has been shaken, and he is confronted with a choice. And whatever that immediate choice would be, there would have to be some confrontation with the ghost of Ben in the next movie where he would have to explain himself, and it would have to be up to Luke to struggle between fulfilling his destiny by destroying the Emperor or staying out of it to no longer be affiliated with his father's murderer.

The second scenario fits in much better with the way the trilogy is laid out now. Vader still gives the same revelation that Obi-Wan killed Luke's father. In this case, though, Vader is Anakin Skywalker, and he is somewhat lying in order to woo Luke over to the dark side. But, at the same time, it plays more into the "certain point of view" logic, inasmuch that Vader blames Obi-Wan for what happened to him and believes that he figuratively killed him. Then, in the next movie, Yoda and Obi-Wan have to convince Luke of what really happened, and it would give more weight to the almost useless line about point of views, which, along with "the other," felt like two major plot points that never really got off the ground.

So, any opinions?

You'll find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view that Lucas has no idea what he's talking about. This is the same guy who thinks the original version of the original trilogy is useless garbage. See. Delusional.

For many of us, the theatrical experience of the OT was a life changing event. I was 8 yrs old in 1977 when I first saw Star Wars. Without that early influence, my life would probably have been very different. Hell, our entire culture was changed by the experience. I was all in favor of the SEs when they came out especially since it gave me a chance to see the OT on the big screen again. However, after viewing them several times and going back to the OT, they just don't hold up. Many of the additions and changes completely changed the tone of the films. This is especially true in ANH. Many, including myself, fealt these changes were for the worse. GL denying the release of the original cuts was like a slap in the face to us. There was no sound reason other than his own hubris.

I used to like the SE too until the year 2000 when the trilogy was released again, only this time, the words "Special Edition" were nowhere on the packaging. It was at this point that I realized they weren't supposed to be an alternate version but the only version, and they were misleading fans into thinking it was the only version. Continue this trend in '04 and '05.

Oh man, that would be HOT! And then Admiral Akbar can rub baby oil all over his body, spilling some on to his own rubbery, aquatic skin.

Ooh, it seems we have similar tastes, Jenny. ^_~

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM

I really don't mind these new covers, although I knew there was more to that ROTJ cover than that. That one seems really empty without Lando on it.

And, yeah, I wish they'd gone for the Gone with the Wind poster as well. I loved it so much that I bought a girl's t-shirt complete with babydoll sleeves just because it featured that poster on it (why they didn't release a male version of it, I don't know). I wear it... I just generally wear an unbuttoned button-up shirt over it to cover the sleeves.

I don't mind that the secrets are given away in the prequels simply because we're not supposed to see them first! We watch the OT. All the secrets are revealed over the course of the trilogy. We're enraptured. We think, "Wow. That's all pretty cool. I wonder how that happened?" Enter the prequels. Like in a mystery novel, this is supposed to be the part at the end where the genius detective shows up and says, "And this is how it happened..." going step by step through the process leading up. It's backstory. It exists only to expand on the original stories, not to be stories on their own.
