And being topical his IS an illegal alien so I'm sure he's at the forefront of debate considering today's headlines. Then again he appears to claim that he IS some sort of saviour so he could be a religious extremist as well.

Go figure!

We have to buy this set atleast to preserve it for the next generation of fans

they think Hayden has always been in ROTJ

Well, if they're under that impression, then they're just stupid with no concept of time. Nothing we can do about that. ^_~

You mentioned taking our medicine now. We don't need medicine! We're not the ones who are sick! We shouldn't be punished. We shouldn't punish ourselves! I can pretty safely assume that the OOT is never going to be seen in the same light as the SE. It will never be released side-by-side as two different versions of the same movie. It seems it will always exist as an obscure special feature marketed as a quaint look back to a simpler time. That doesn't mean it's going to die out, though. It's been underground for the past ten years, and it's still managed to survive. It pretty much contains the same status now with this release, but it's still going to survive. Nothing's going to ever crush it, no matter how hard George tries to do so. But as long as he's fighting, it's never going to be viewed as the Star Wars Trilogy. It's going to be viewed as those old movies formerly known as the Star Wars Trilogy.

I might buy these. But if I do, it's not going to be because I'm trying to goad little Lucas to come out of his hole and release better versions. That's just us being manipulated. It will be because I feel I want the product enough to warrant spending my money on it. And that's what it all comes down to.

This isn't quite related to the movie, but more so to the movie's product line. I was in Toys'R'Us today, and I noticed a 12 inch talking Superman figure. I didn't pay much attention to it, but I noticed a little splash on the box that read, "English-Speaking Toy!" which was then repeated below it in Spanish. That just totally blew my mind that it's now required to denote which language the toy speaks in, especially since you can push the button to find out anyway if you really wanted to! It was funny and amazing and really, really weird. I'm not trying to sound like a hick or discriminatory against people who speak another language, but it just seems like it's going a bit too far. The exclaimation point was rather funny too, as if the fact that it spoke English, as oppose to another language, was a selling point! As if Superman would speak another language besides English anyway! ^_~

1977-->1993: What?!
Time
It's already been confirmed, to my annoyance, that it will be in the matte rather than the actual picture. There was some interview referred to in the making of the '93 transfer that stated they had to go back to original elements before the subtitles were "burned in." I really prefer the subtitles in the actual frame. It just doesn't seem right to me that they should be outside elements that are digitally inserted in a black void that's not at all part of the movie, and that's the one thing about all my DVDs that I just have to do my best to ignore.

EDIT: I missed part of your question. On a 16x9, it most likely will be in the frame of the movie, even though it's still not actually part of the film element. On a standard TV, it will definitely be in the matte.

Just Saw The Unaltered Trilogy For The First Time...
Time
Well, I'd only actually been a fan of Star Wars for about a year before the Special Editions came out, but I was already fairly entrenched by that point into the Star Wars mythos. I admit I was very excited, especially to be able to see the movies on the big screen. That overshadowed the point that things were changed. I never thought of them, though, as recreations or replacements of the Star Wars films, just this nice little bonus thing. And I assumed that, after 1997, they'd go away. I remember my friend had just gotten into Star Wars, and he was buying up the action figures. I tried to persuade him not to, because, in response to the SE release, they had changed the packaging from the blue/silver Star Wars logo on orange to this nasty-looking green on green thing. So I tried to convince him to wait until 1998 to buy figures, because I assumed that, once the year had passed, they'd revert to the old style again. I was wrong. I was eleven, give me a break. But I never stopped watching my Faces set. Like I said, I considered the SE an alternate "special" version of Star Wars. It didn't take the place of it. So while my friends threw away their old movies, I held onto them for dear life. I remember I did get excited when I realized that the "One Last Time..." tagline of the Faces set must mean that the SEs would come to video, so I could add them to my collection. This was before I knew anything about aspect ratios or the fact that VHS tape could wear out and wasn't nearly the quality of film.

For all the horrible things that have come out of the SE, I do feel grateful for the experience to get to watch them on the big screen, having been too young to catch them the first time. I'll never forget it.

I'm thinking they're just gonna splice in the original crawl

That I can live with. The 1993 sound elements (especially Beru's voice) still trouble me greatly, though. Of course, I've come to expect the worst with this. Tack on the crawl from somewhere, though... I mean, where? It had to come from a print of the film somewhere. I see three options with that. If it's a good print of the film it comes from, I don't see why they'd use the Definitive masters over it. On the other hand, it could be a crappy film print, which would make sense to think they'd only use that section of it because they had to. In that case, they'd have to clean it up to match the rest of the film. Or, the more logical solution given the entire shoddy handling of this release, they won't clean it up, as per their comments (even though it's only about a minute's worth of footage), and it will stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the movie.

I've heard random comments around here lately about them digitally removing the A New Hope part, but that reeks of... um, not-original. And I've always heard that the formatting of the words had to be revised in order for the timing to work out once they added that little bit, so just digitally painting over that is definitely not the solution. I'm getting worried, and I hope that's just fan speculation. With any luck, that original crawl is what they "exhaustively searched" for, because it's apparent they haven't exhaustively searched for anything else.

Return of the Jedi Script Game

Not a problem.

Selacious Crumb: Ohhh! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!
3PO: You will, therefore, be taken to the Dune Sea and cast into the Pit of Carkoon, nesting place of the all-powerful Sarlaac.
Han: Doesn't sound so bad.
3PO: In his belly, you will find a new defintion of pain of suffering as you are slowly digested... over a thousand years.
Han: On second thought, let's pass on that.

Hate to make another new thread (as in another thread being made... I haven't made any others on this issue myself), but I just thought of something. It was something we used to discuss a few weeks ago, before the dark times, before the non-anamorphic news. But since the news that these are going to the masters used for the 1993 Definitive editions... how in the world is that possibly going to match up with their initial claim that these movies are the original theatrical versions? Obviously, in the 16 years that had passed, we know all kinds of changes had taken place. Yet Lucasfilm claims that these are the original theatricals. But what about the title crawl? What about Aunt Beru's voice? I don't know about you, but I think if these aren't really the theatrical versions, THAT is the bigger issue than whether or not it's an anamorphic transfer (not that it's not important). They never promised us an anamorphic transfer. They DID, however, promise the theatrical versions. And if they don't live up to that, then we have a serious problem and a definite case of false advertising.
