Star Wars duels: lightsabers & the force!

I know exactly what you're saying. I remember when I saw TPM in theatres for the first time when I was 13, and it was at that exact moment when I really figured out what was going on. Where they fall about 300 feet at high speeds without even feeling any pain and then rebounding immediately as if they had really good moon shoes on. It was obvious that it was just trying to outdo everything the movies before it had set down, and that it would continue to "get bigger" with each subsequent movie to the point where it's almost impossible to consider them all connected to the same universe and the same laws of physics.

Expecting too much of George Lucas?

I really don't mind that each installment has different tones or meets a different need. After all, like zombie just said, the original trilogy does that, and each of them are quite good in their own ways. So it can be done successfully. Television does that every week. It's really just the "now" attitude that he has. Whatever mindset of the week he has is what everything he's ever done has to be. Sometimes that manifests itself simply in the way he talks about things (i.e. I always meant this scene to be perceived this way...) even though it's obvious he's talking out of his ass. Sometimes it manifests itself in him actually going back to old material and changing it to fit his new viewpoint rather than accept that he's changed and deal with it.

I haven't read them myself, but I'm pretty sure the fate of the "Hands of Blue" guys was expounded upon in the Serenity comics that take place in between the series and the movie. Also... Lawrence Dobson comes back! Go figure!

Amen. And the same goes for Palpatine, but I don't think it's quite an "enlightened" state so much as a too important to bother with fighting. Am I the only person who finds it weird that Palpatine didn't have guards stationed when Mace and the others showed up. He certainly had them in ROTJ, not to mention later in ROTS when Yoda shows up, as useless as they were.

EDIT: But I don't mind the telekenesis thing as long as it's someone really powerful using it. If every Jedi, including Luke and Ben, started whipping out telekenesis of large objects during fights all the time, that would be different. But, you know, minor things, like drawing a small, unfixed object like a lightsaber back to them is okay by me.

You're right. It didn't have to. I still think it should have, though. We had a great trilogy that had a beginning and an end, several novels. And now, in addition to that, we have three new crappy movies a generation later, followed up by a... TV series?! Am I the only person thinking that it's going to go on forever? And I don't like that. All works of fiction that tell a cohesive story should end at some point.

General Anime/Manga Thread

It's simply because there's nothing improper about showing a child fully nude from the front. It's showing adults naked from the front that starts to become a problem on broadcast TV.

Case in point. When Goku was a child, he was shown completely nude all the time. When he was an adult, he was never shown nude again in the manga, and the only few nude shots of him in the anime were from the back.

I thought Serenity was pretty good. I mean, I don't think it's as good as Firefly, as it loses some of the charm and western feel, and Shepherd Book's role was painfully small, it's still a very exciting and enjoyable film. But Randy is right in that the narrative does fit the small screen better. It's just too hard to encapsulate such a large plot into a one-hour and fifty-nine minute movie.

EDIT: It definitely works ten times better if you're already familiar with the show.

I liked Serenity a lot. However, the actual tv show was many times better in most of the episodes. You had more of a feeling for the characters and the plots were down to earth and authentic in their values. I so wish the show's larger scale plot lines could have played out properly. The bastard at Fox who canceled the show should have given it a whole season's chance at the very least. I bet the finale would have hooked many people.

etc...

Part of me agrees and part of me doesn't. Like I said, Serenity loses part of its charm by not being simple. Suddenly the characters are stage center in a "fight to save the universe" kind of plotline rather than getting a job and staying out of trouble, which were some of the dichtoms that Joss Whedon mentioned on Firefly bonus materials. Plus, the sci-fi elements were much stronger than in the show. We have ion clouds, love bots, the Maidenhead bar. But I think it works as a movie. And it works even better for fans of the show, which is for whom this movie was made. I mean, I know it made me excited and nervous for the crew to suddenly be involved in matters that were much more important than you ever would have wanted them to be involved with. And this is a show that got pummeled before it could tell its story, so I think the fans were very much interested in having things resolved and explained. Yes, it would have been better had they not had to deal with all of that stuff, but I feel that it had to be done to wrap things up. And if the idiots at Fox hadn't cancelled it, then the story could have taken its time like it needed to be done. But I think it's a worthy trade-off.

That was a little immature.

Yes, I believe I admitted it was in my original post. Don't see how it's any more "immature" than the other justifiably angry posts by other members cussing him out and describing with detail the sexual acts that Rick must perform on George to keep his job. So thank you for singling me out, Mike.

My sincerest apologies. It's just that JediRandy might be watching, and we don't need any more reasons for him to star insulting us. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.

I appreciate the apology. It's okay. Like I said, I know my remark was juvenile, and I don't usually go for the sex-based nicknames, so I thought once wouldn't hurt. But I have to give props to whoever it was in the "Who's More Annoying" thread who came up with a much better nickname than mine... I don't even remember what it was anymore.

And only ONE SEASON!! Ya know how when you like a show a lot and you go back and watch the first season and it's usually pathetic and weird and a mere shadow of the good thing it eventually became??

Hell, it wasn't even a full season. It was only half a season, and it begs the question of what more could have been done. But, on the other hand, having only fourteen episodes makes each episode feel that much more important. If you had 150 episodes, then some of them (probably only a few) surely just would have felt like just another episode.
