George Lucas chastised the nation's universities for not treating the study of film in the same way they do other academic disciplines such as law, medicine, journalism, and architecture. "It just isn't thought of in the same breath, which is for me a sacrilege," Lucas said at a groundbreaking ceremony at USC where a 137,000-square-foot complex is being constructed to house the university's film school -- a complex made possible by Lucas's $175-million gift to the university. Lucas, who produced his first films as an undergraduate of the university in the mid-'60s, said, "When I came here I didn't have a clue about how to make movies, anything -- I didn't even watch movies. I was a real novice." Today's (Thursday) Los Angeles Times said that Lucas is treating the new facility "much like one of his cinematic productions," working with Urban Design Group of Dallas on the design of the buildings -- even "on such minute aspects as the detailing on the archways."

I like the quote, actually. He has a really good point. And as a theatre major, I feel the same way.

What do you think of the Prequel Trilogy? a general discussion thread

Honestly, I like the story they chose to tell with the PT. I'm not getting into do I like the way it came out. But I don't mind that it gives away all of the OT's secrets and whatnot. Because, honestly, that's what they were supposed to do. They're prequels. They explain the past. To me there's no problem because if I do watch all the movies, I watch them in the right order: the OT followed by the PT. The only time there is a problem is if you try to watch them in Lucas's order. Like I said before, it's like watching the Making of... documentaries on Disc 2 before you watch the actual movie. Because that's pretty much what the PT is to the OT: a making of documentary.

Exactly. I have nothing against making up story parts as you go along. If you manage to do it well, it can come across quite seemlessly. Like the OT for the most part. Another example is Back to the Future Part II, where they never wanted to go to the future, but they were stuck with the gag ending they had written for the first movie. So they took that and let that springboard them into another plot about time paradoxes. Just the fact that the PT has "forced" George to go back and actually change the original movies to fit it is a testament to how poorly they were conceived.

I agree. I mean, I love looking at the sequels in context of Vader's redemption, but the star always is Luke throughout all three of them. The goals that have to be accomplished, whether defeating the Empire as a whole or saving Vader, they're all Luke's goals that we're taken along for. What bugs me most about the 1-6 mentality is that the original movies simply don't fit that mold. You can tie the sequels to the original movie because the motivations in all three are Luke's. You have to do a lot of mental stretching to believe that the original movies are Anakin's story as well as the prequels.

Yeah, I agree with canofhumdingers's interpretation of the scene. It makes Vader willfully evil to follow the Emperor. It just doesn't make any logistical sense to follow him for an entire generation if all he's really doing is waiting for a chance to overthrow him because he doesn't like what he's done with his life. If he was that unhappy with his decisions, he should have abandoned the Empire or simply killed himself.

And the new scene makes no sense because, as others have pointed out, Vader knew about Luke. He made it no secret that he knew about Luke. The Emperor wasn't calling up Vader to say, "Oh, yeah, by the way, your son is alive." That's common knowledge. Vader wasn't exactly discrete about this information, so it seems unlikely he was trying to keep his search for Skywalker a secret. The point of the call was to inform Vader of the increasing threat. Yeah, Luke destroyed the Death Star. Yeah, he's a key figure in the Rebellion. The Empire needs to get its revenge against him. But now Luke is becoming stronger in the Force. That's the great disturbance. He is becoming a threat, not just to the Empire at large, but to them personally, and to the Sith. He was about to get additional training. That's the purpose of the call. Not to establish family ties or to waste time with some very obvious (to them) family connection. That's just a silly way to (re)interpret the scene, and it's obvious George wasn't thinking too hard when he re-wrote the dialogue, otherwise he would have realized that it doesn't make sense.

I voted ESB. I always find it interestin that CO always says that ESB was too dark for him as a kid, whereas I was about the same age when I saw it and loved how dark it was and especially loved how the heroes got beaten around the block for the entire movie. It was great! But Star Wars is a very, very close second. Especially after having gotten the DVDs, I've been appreciating the magic of the first movie more and more, and it's helped a lot that it's lacking all of the crappy additions that George made. There is just something so special about it. So it's very close to me between those two movies, but I had to go for ESB in the end.

So really, what's with Yoda's warning?
Do you honestly not understand the plot?

Geez, boris, harsh. It's a perfectly good question and not the first time Yoda's actions and lines in ESB have been debated. So chill out.

But anyway, everyone here has pretty much summed up my feelings on this matter. It is a pretty weird thing and has some ambiguity to it. But they did manage to get through it without falling afoul of anything Yoda warned about. I also find it weird that Yoda is so eager for Luke to face Vader the second time around. I mean, how could Luke's self-training in that year make him so much different in between the two movies?

The lady asked me if she could take my order and I decided against it), but stories like Gaffer's burger juice tale remind me of why I don't.

The hardest thing for me to give up was sushi, but, honestly, the fear of getting sick by eating meat after not having had it for so long sort of keeps me from craving anything. Glad you were able to resist. Are you doing better?

And, Nanner, after I read your post, I had a mental image of you hanging off a cow by your teeth like some parasite.

Hmm, interesting. I never knew that anime and soy milk mixed.

But honestly, I think that fake meat is much better than real meat. I even used to eat it on occasion long before I became a vegetarian. Real meat makes me gag now anyway. Fun story. Friday I was in the commons. They were advertising they had Boca burgers, which they served a lot last year but haven't so far at all this year. I'd always just take it in the wrapper and microwave it myself because they either wanted to deep fry them or put on the grill with the meat burgers, which I would just take and throw away. But I came up there and asked for it, and they claimed they didn't have any, which really pissed me off. Then I had the pleasure of seeing them "cleaning off" the grill, which was cooking about 20 meat patties at once. The gril was covered with layer of burger juice about an inch and a half thick, which they scraped away. I nearly puked.

Like I said, if parents actually cared about what their children watch, then they should be more concerned with actually finding out about that product rather than trusting a random letter. Good for us that the ratings are practically hidden... now if only TV ratings would get the hell out of the way. Those things get bigger and bigger every year.

But the point is that children are individuals, and it's impossible to judge what's "age-appropriate" across the board. If this 8 year old has enough emotional maturity not to get freaked out by CSI, well, more power to her.
