Finished baking the second tape.

Welcome to OriginalTrilogy.com, one of the few places in the world where the above sentence makes any kind of sense!

Nah, sticky-shed is a pretty common thing with any kind of analog tape.  A friend of mine had a Studer A80 and was constantly baking tapes working on projects.

Baking tapes famously saved the 3rd Boston album (whether it deserved to be saved is a matter of personal opinion ;-)

Print quality of the SE release
Time

I remember a heavy blue shift during the theatrical run.  I saw it with a friend who managed a photo lab.  He commented "way to much cyan" and I chalked it up to him being an overly neurotic colour nerd (I should have been as well as I was, and am, a professional graphic designer).  Went back to see it a few days later, and it was plain as day. I must have been too excited to see it again on the big screen to not have noticed it.  I probably saw it half dozen times during it's run.  Same every time.

A New Hope DVD Color Correction (*unfinished project * - a mass of information)

The original photography of the Tantive sequence had a lot of blue/cyan in the image, which was graded out later.  This dialing back of the cyan/blue in that sequence is why many of us remember the corridor as being sort of bright, almost yellow-ish, and the floor tan, and it's also why so many of the trooper's blue uniforms were reduced to a sort of gray.

So the cyan cast in the SE actually better represents the original photography, than the '77 release prints?  My head hurts just thinking about that :-D

Thanks for the info, Mike

@frank678: It has been stated before that when they made the 97 SE, Lucas specifically wanted ANH to be color timed with an original Technicolor IB print as reference. I didn't see the 97 SE in the cinema and the released versions sure don't show it, but in theory this would mean that they would've had a pretty good starting point when making the 2004 SE....

For what it's worth, I saw it opening day with some friends, including one who worked at a photolab. When it was finished he said "My God!  Way too much Cyan in that movie!".  I openly mocked him at the time, thinking his job had made him all "super-nerdy" about colour (even though I'm a graphic designer ;).  But when I saw it a second time a few days later, I realized he was right. So the theory may have been to colour-time to the Tech IB, but I definitely recall the Cyan was super heavy, especially in the Tantive corridors, where it was painfully obvious.  I realize what I'm saying is contrary to what is thought to have been "established", but unlike the "grappling hook miss/Biggs" scenes, I really did see this with my own eyes at the theatre, and remember it vividly because I was looking for it specifically on the second viewing (unless it's possible to botch up the colours during the projection, and the print was actually fine)

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years

Some news....

Disney does NOT NOT NOT own the previous 6 films. They only have the rights to future films and to the characters themselves. They cannot do anything with the older films.

The potential upside of this, is that Disney *shouldn't* care in the least, about this site, or any fan preservation of the Original Trilogy as they have no financial (or legal) interest in it.

I'm very interested in how you go about warping one piece of footage to map onto another. I spent a lot of time working out algorithms for this a few years ago, and was pretty happy with the results, but would really like to hear more about your approach.

Glad it wasn't just me who thought that.  I came to this topic immediately after seeing that on Mike's site.

However, I actually don't mind and quite enjoy the music change in the end celebration scene...actually felt it fit better with that scene and sounded more meaningful and fitting as the end to a whole epic saga/journey.

Anyone else agree?

I agree that it's a nice piece of music, but I disagree that it fits well in ROTJ.  All of the films score have been "orchestral" until that point (except for when there is a band playing within the films... Jabba's Palace for example) and then BAM there's this unprecedented "new age" music complete with a loud bass guitar.  Completely flies in the face of, and doesn't jibe with the scores of the rest of the films.  Again, except for "Jedi Rocks" (which, while awful, takes place within the film, rather than being part of it's score) I can't think of any other "new age" music or bass guitar in the other films. To me, it just doesn't work as SW music.  YMMV.

Can't post it yet (it will actually probably wind up as a nice article on savestarwars.com), but there IS more info to come. And maybe even something positive/hopeful...

It'll likely be late next week at the earliest though.

"Positive/hopeful" sounds better than the alternative.  Can't wait to see what it is, as it looks pretty bleak right now.

I dunno.  While I personally would never have been that rude if I were actually trying to communicate with her, the 'hypocritical, insufferable cunt' remark made me laugh quite a bit, because it's not so far from the truth.

I actually got a bigger kick out of her response to that :-D  I don't envy the position she's in, nor do I think she should be subject to the "wrath" from fans for her father's choices.  That said, I do think her responses should be a little tamer as she's representing LFL, but "still, she's got a lot of spirit"

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I've been talking with my wife lately about the "backlash" and how it's even been picked up in the mainstream media this time around. Maybe fans have been pushed to far.  I know I have.  I don't object to whatever changes George wants to make to his SEs, I just want the freedom to watch the OT alongside them, and judging from the 1 Star reviews on Amazon, it "seemed" like a lot of others felt the same way.

Walked into Future Shop yesterday morning to buy some coffee for my Keurig.  My wife says "Do I need to hold you back from the SW display"?  Ha ha ha!  I go in, and find "every" copy in their AT-AT display sold out! That thing held a lot of copies, and I know they refilled it throughout the day, the day before.  Wife looks at me and says "You might as well just buy the damned thing".  The sad thing is, I know she's right :-(
