Star Wars prequels as a time travel story?
Time

Well, it could work technically, but I'm not a big fan of it. By introducing different timelines (or parallel universes that differ only in one key decision), the original timeline loses more and more of it's significance and uniqueness.

If you allow infinite parallel universes, the victory of the rebels wouldn't mean anything anymore. Since they "tried" to win infinite times, it's not surprising that they succeded a couple of times. And ultimately, there are still infinite other universes where they didn't win and the empire destroys them. So the series of events from the OT is just one of many and there's no real reason why it should be more important than any other timeline.

There should either be a plot device, that allows for only a certain number of alternate timelines (which could be hard to introduce without logical errors) or it should be an easygoing "what if" story that can just as well go the BTTF way, as it's only imaginary and doesn't have to care for plausability of time travel.

I know that I sound very negative, but I really think these are important points that have to be considered before writing such a story.

What kind of time travel do you have in mind? Would there be different timelines or just one? If only one timeline, would Luke be able to change the past, like in Back To The Future, or would his actions ultimately lead to the events of the OT?

I think all of these concepts for time travel have their flaws, so I don't think any of them would have been adequate to use for official prequels. They would ultimately devalue the originals.

As for a fan-made story, any of them might work, if it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Idea & Info: is their anyone willing to edit the original ultra stereo tracks of halloween 4 and 5 laserdisc to sync up with the blu rays?
Time

Cool that you're doing these edits, jedimasterobiwan. I wondered for a long time if there are versions of Halloween 4 and 5 that have the LD soundtrack or if someone could do that. I'm looking forward to see your edits, could you please release them in the next two months?

Does anyone really miss not being able to read Sword of the Jedi.

So the ink from the books vanished? Refusing to read a good story because it is no longer canon is like feeling obliged to read every crappy novel, just because it is canon.

No the Christie Golden Sword of the Jedi trilogy was never written or what ever was finished was never published. When Disney bought Star Wars a lot of novels post Return of the Jedi were cancelled.

Well, that's a good reason not to read them. Sorry for jumping to conclusions.

I don't mind the new books being on the same level as the movies, as long as the movies work without the books. Small references to the novels are fine, in the fashion of Han's reference to the bounty hunter on Ord Mantell, just this time they would actually know what they were talking about.

Don't you want your kids to see you as a role model and follow your example? Or do you let your kids decide for themselves wether they can drink alcohol or not? Or if they can eat then whole bars of chocolate at once? Yes, there is evidence that drinking alcohol and eating too much chocolate is unhealthy, but when it comes to atheism vs. religion there is no proof that one is better than the other, it is all personal opinion.

And that is exactly why you should use your power as a parent in the first instance but not in the second instance. As a parent you should to try to guide your kids away from the things that there is a clear evidence of their harm (i.e. drugs, too much alcohol or sugar). On the other hand, imposing subjective things is wrong (i.e. imposing religion, imposing your tastes in art, etc.).

If there is no harm in imposing subjective things, why is it wrong? And how could you avoid imposing these subjective things on your children? Would you visit all kinds of churches with your kid and go to all sorts of exhibitions? Would you tell them about all sorts of political ideas? Isn't saying to your kids that all people are equal and should be treated with respect also imposing your views on them? By participating in a certain religion (or not participating at all) you're communicating to your child what you think is the right thing.

Furthermore, I even think banning nudity and violence from the media wouldn't make Ender happy, since people are still wanting these things. In my understanding, he wants people to realize themselves that these things are not appropriate and no ban would lead to this realization.

According to the paradigm I explained in my previous post, such wish is in a sense potentially even more harmful, as achieving it would require brainwashing.

I don't think he would be satisfied if he knows that people only share his beliefs through brainwashing.

Wishing for things to be different is not wishing for things to change it's wishing that things in the past played out differently. And there is no way to put such a wish into practice. Also, there is an alternative to brainwashing: simply talking to people and trying to convince them. Which is what he is doing. You are doing it, too, and now I am doing it. That's what a discussion is all about and the ultimate origin of all changes in society.

So I guess we are out of comic books to reboot.

As I said before, I didn't say the succes was based on the features I mentioned, I said these features justified the strong connection to the games. The movies would have been great even without these gimmicks and Settlers may be great, too. But in the last case I don't see why they had to strictly stick to the board game, while I see why they called it the Lego movie or Clue.

If they announced a movie inspired by Settlers, it wouldn't be a big deal, but making a movie based on the game seems unimaginative as I don't think it has that much to offer.

So, if someone wants to convince me why using the Settlers name was necessary, you should list the merits of the game and what it has to offer apart from "trading and settling".

That's no method. It is merely specifying ones wish. The very basic question you need to answer here is: how do you want your wish to happen?

So you are saying that we can only wish for things if we know how to make that wish happen? Sometimes I wish I could travel back in time and change what I said or did. According to your logic I should only wish for that if I know how to build a time machine.

Clue had the unique feature of different endings

The fact that it was funny was much more important than the multiple ending gimmick.

Yeah, but they could have called their funny mystery film anything if it didn't have this gimmick. This feature justifies the strong connection to the board game and I don't see anything in these other movies that justifies the connection to the corresponding games

I'm not even saying the Settlers movie and show will suck, I'm just saying that it's not necessary to copy the world of the board game.

Hmm, remember Battleship? Or movies based on video games, like In the name of the King, Alone in the Dark or Far Cry? The vast majoroty of adaptions of games is pretty lame.

Clue had the unique feature of different endings, while the Lego Movie had a distinct look. These movies offer more than just a story set in the same universe as the game.

I just can't see how it is necessary to base a series on Settlers of Catan while it could as well stand for itself. The main features of the game are building settlements and trading resources. This would work just as well in a unique setting.

The non-linear course of games in general makes it very hard to adapt them into movies and just using the same universe is very unimaginative.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I'd say it only has to nullify the SE of ROTJ with its galaxy wide celebrations. In the original version we don't see the whole Empire collapsing just because the second Death Star is destroyed, so it's only "the special edition of Return of the Jedi didn't happen" which, we certainly all agree here, isn't a bad thing.
