Mitch,

You may want to try and make contact with Ilya Salkind! Mr. Salkind is a very very nice man, and he still has a deep love for his "Superman" movie past and also the extended versions he produced for T.V. airing. I know that he has gone out of his way to be very nice to Superman fans and he supports a release of the Salkind edits. Ilya just may be approachable, and willing to help you find the footage you need! If you make a good case and come off as talented and professional, you may find yourself working on an official release. Take the chance man!

You can contact him at The Ilya Salkind Company, Inc. (CLICK HERE)

This is great work, but it kind of takes the move out of the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Too bad Michael Thau could not have had more money & time, but I am happy with what they put together and released on DVD last year.

You have to look out for that disk, as a number of them suffer from "Disc Rot". I've read that a few other people have had that problem as well. Mt copy of "Superman II" also shows this "Disc Rot" problem. My L.D. of Superman and Superman II are ready for the trash, and it was the soundtracks that did show the first signs of the problem. Another thing you would have to take note of, is that some of the scenes that are on the extended T.V. versions have some alternate music to the ones on the official video release. ADigitalMan asked if you hang out on the "Superman Cinema message board"? I do! "Superman Cinema" is a great resource, and I used there site as a guide in making my composite edit.

lmk!!!

I'll send both right a way!

Doesn't hurt to try..
If not to hell with it, it's only 2 seconds, lol But it is an important smirk...lol

Thanks Mitch! It will be great to try, and I would appreciate you sending it.

But you have made me forget about this with your release -

Question - what are you doing about the Checkov hadn spray scene then?

I have no idea why the BBC would do that...

As for the "Checkov hand spray scene", we just cut out the 2 seconds. It's not important to the story at all, so *SNIP SNIP*...

Assuming this is the same 'smirk shot' you discussed earlier would in not be possible to overlay the fullscreen image on the widescreen? the shot seems fairly static and there is no movement in the background.

Based on the clip you posted before it should be possible or is the difference in quality too great?

This just might work... I would have to get my hands on a better source for that shop. The laserdisc is so washed out and it would not look good. I was thinking of buying a VHS copy, just for that shot and also parts of the soundtrack that have lots of distortion from the laserdisc being over 25 years old.

I'm not sure how we are doing distribution yet. We did not know about a commentary on startrek.com, but if it has to do with ST:TMP, we sure will add it. Thanks for the heads up on this!
I'll go check is out.

The best shot I have from his Transformers work is poster size, and I'll try to scan that in today, I'll also ask the modeler if he has some other stuff I can post for you guys... I'm not sure if he is under contract to do the second film, or if he has to keep quiet. This guy does great work. He also does work for some Las Vegas theme hotels, and did a number of the huge stone like figures outside the Warner Brothers store in New York City. His wife worked on the sand worm models in 1985's DUNE, and they did the under sea cliff face in The Abyss. It's so kewl to visit them at there place in L.A. when I'm out there. They HATE what CGI has done to there art and business, but they still find kewl jobs on films now and then.

I can see this...

It's like in Empire, George was able to "Play" with his new idea of the world of Dagoba and his new guy "Yoda" and how to make him work, or a new Ice Planet with Huge Walker Tanks, or a Cloud City... while Lawrence Kasdan and Ivan Kirshner had the Job of making Luke and friends, as well as all the required "Star Wars" story arc things work together within Georg's new "play" environments... Once Empire was done Lucas never did go back add anything new to the Dagoba world in Jedi, he just moved on to "Play" in Jabba's Court, and also with his new Ewok guys and there planet. He only went back to Dagoba in that film because he HAD TO for the story the fans expected and paid to see.

In Empire this system worked well because Kasdan and Ivan Kirshner made the story SW fans had to follow work in these kewl new "LUCAS MADE" places, and the two of them got what "Star Wars" was all about to us fans of the original movie. It did not work as well in Jedi because Richard Marquand did not understand the pop-cultural impact "Star Wars" was as strongly as Kirshner had. When Lucas does it all himself like in the PT, it just falls apart under it's own weight. There are some great new environments in the PT, it's just too bad Lucas did not have some strong collaborators on those projects like Lawrence Kasdan and Ivan Kirshner, as well as good casting...

I'm going to want to see this edit because I HATED this film so much and did not want to hate it...

The only reason I saw it was because one of my best friends made the life size full scale model of one of the main robots used in filming. Yes, it was not 100% CGI, but close to it. You don't know how hard it was for me not to be able to post photos from his workshop last year!

Not trying to go off topic here but...

It's funny how so many of the same key things that you people say went wrong (and why) with the PT, also went wrong with the Pierce Brosnan JAMES BOND films as well. Once the original Bond Film makers and stars that made the series a hit in the 60's and 70's became old and started to depart, the magic was gone. The way to carry on became the mantra "Just make the old fans (and younger fans of the old films) happy", and that was translated by the second generation of producers (The Broccoli kids) as let's Re-do everything that worked in the hit films of the past, but now use high tech CGI, and young hip popular actors even if they are not up to the parts standards. The Broccoli kids seem to have gone with "Let's not break the mold and just give the fans what they expect to see, and keep it trendy and flashy so the movie shows like Entertainment Tonight will take notice of our production, and we can make lots of money to keep our production company & way of life going".

I think the last film Casino Royal worked a bit better for them because the makers did break away from the mold a great deal more then they had done with the "Brosnan Bonds", but are still not even close to that magic that was there from Dr. No - Moonraker...

Just seems like Lucas and The Broccoli kids have a lot in common here.

If Indy 4 sucks and fails to be a huge hit at the box office, I wonder if it will be Lucas or Spielberg who will be the fans "Sacrificial Cow" in the blame game. If it does suck, I'll have only myself to blame for expecting something even a bit close to the thrills I got from seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time.

A New Thought on George
Time
The head of FOX circa 1975/76 Alan Ladd, Jr. had faith in the Star Wars story idea & in George as a Director, but he knew Sci-Fi films did not do well with moviegoers of that time (In ticket sales that is). I'm not sure someone like Zanuck would have supported Lucas in that way if he had been in charge during that time. Alan Ladd, Jr. (A BIG gun in Hollywood) had the faith to leave George to himself to make the first film (on a standard 10 million budget), that shows something of major support. But it's true that Lucas has had nothing but a group of "sycophants" working for him post Empire Strikes Back. Empire works because Lucas respected Ivan Kershner, and left him alone most of the time. Ivan Kershner made a film Ivan himself wanted and used his own ideas during production without asking George at times, and changing some of the set ideas on the fly. After that film, it was all about what George wanted and nothing but what George the movie GOD wanted... It's sad, but all George wanted was what he personally thought was cute, and everyone who works with him seems to agree with everything he wants, as lots of people have said here on this forum. We can see as far back as the Making Magic CD-ROM from 1995 how his team had just bowed to every whim George came up with for the new shots for the S.E. without any kind of creative criticism at all. Just a lot of forced giggles and "That's great George GREAT! GREAT!" from his team... I bet Gary Kurts kept George under some control, and his not being part of Return of the Jedi shows. Richard Marquand could in no way have had the freedom and support or ability that Ivan Kershner did, and being such a un-tried director did not help. You can tell by the end product that Richard Marquand just gave Lucas 100% what Lucas expected, and did not try to make it a signature film of his own. This has been the status quo at Lucasfilm ever since.

Video is shimmering! Is this from DV codec?
Time

I just got done with 3 weeks of work editing a project, and when I was looking at the finished DVD on my T.V., the video seems to "shimmer". Is this from the DV codec I used to keep the file size down for editing?

I'm taking the master video from a series of DVDs by using DVD Decrypter, then I use a program "VobEdit" to demux the vob files. Next I take the video files that have been Demuxed with VobEdit, and use a program called VirtualDub to turn the demuxed video into a format I can edit in "Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5".

What compression should I tell VirtualDub to use? So far, I have been selecting "MainConcept DV 2.4.16" is this where my "SHIMMERING" problem is coming from?

Any FREE M4a to wav Converters?
Time

Hi,

Trying to add a complete music score to my DVD project, but the music files are in M4a format, and I need to convert them to WAV first.
I would rather not have to spend any money on this, as I don't think I would have a use for the converter after this one project. Does anyone know of a 100% FREE converter that will not place an advert sound-tag on the audio files like AVS Audio Tools does?

The editing work on the Widescreen "Special Longer Version" of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was completed at 6:16am Eastern Standard Time on November 16th 2007!!!!

Now I just need to burn this monster to a test DVD and take a look at it on the Big High Def T.V. tonight!
Let's hope for the best, as I would like to get this version out in the next few weeks for pre-view testing...

Thank you to everyone who helped!

To be honest, after working on this for all this time, I am getting so sick of looking at this movie! *Grin*

We are still working on this, so I don't want to say too much. But it will not be as long, the order of some of the scenes will be changed, and the soundtrack will be a mix of the old and new versions. I think it will feel more like an episode then a film, but as I say it's still in the works.

How did you envision the prequels?
Time
Back in the mid 1980's I went to one of Creation's Star Trek / Comic Book Conventions and found at a dealers table a copy of what was being described as a "Story Treatment" for the next "Star Wars" project. I knew that it was not anything official, but being hungry for anything "Star Wars" at that time, I gave up $5 and began to eat it up... I thought it would have made a good movie at the time. I've found it here on the internet, so here is a link to it... Some of you may find it enjoyable.

STAR WARS III: FALL OF THE REPUBLIC
Story Treatment By John L. Flynn

FADE IN:

MAIN AND CREDIT TITLES SUPERIMPOSED ON THE
BLACK OF OUTER SPACE -- pinpointed with
piercing stars, several moons, a planet,
and a bright-colored nebulae. As TITLES end --

The following is related in the story, roll-up
format:

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the Old Republic was
crumbling away, rotting from the corruption and treachery
within. Power-hungry technocrats and wealthy bureaucrats
maneuvered and bribed their way into office, while one am-
bitious senator plotted to destroy the Jedi and rule the
galaxy.

Hoping to restore virtue and the remembered glory of the
Republic, the High Council of Senators dispatched the Jedi
Knights - protectorate of justice in the galaxy - on a
quest to retrieve the lost Kaiburr Crystal. They believed
that the small diamond-like object (which intensified the
power of the Force) would unite the disaffected among the
people and would destroy the corruption around them.

However, within their Council, the evil Senator Palpatine
had other traitorous designs. Foreseeing that the Crystal
would secure his position as Emperor, Palpatine deceived one
of the Jedi Knights and sent him to acquire the Crystal.
