Riddley has stated that the difference in tech is there because he didn't want to make a movie that looks like it's from the 70's. Simple as that.

I think there could have been a huge world war on earth (Paris at the end of IV) between events in Prometheus and ALIEN. This war depleted much of earths resources and manufacturing and earth now has to rely on antiquated equipment that had been stored off world since the early days of space travel (pre Prometheus events).

I saw this in the theater during it's 1990's re-release. Lot's of fun seeing it with a bunch of fellow fans, and the surround mix of "Only A Northern Song" blew my mind. Enjoy!

I had been one of the original play testers for the James Bond RPG back in the early 1980's. I still have some of the original pre-release manuals someplace. I was also very much into the Star Trek Role Playing Game from FASA.
