Children: Discipline and the Consequences or Lack Thereof
Time

What Plans? said:

As a 6th grade teacher, I can honestly say I wish corporal punishment was still allowed.  Some of these kids are practically getting away with murder.

I tell you what it works. I was being an asshole in class when I was in the 4th grade, I was sent to the office, and got 10 good ones with a paddle.

I was good kid after that.

Back in those days we had no other choice to be good in school, because we feared the consequences. Kids have no consequences these days, or at least they don't see the fact that there future is destroyed as a consequence at the time.

As far as parenting, I can count on one hand how many times my parents hit me. That is simply because the idea of a spanking was always in my mind, so I tried to do good.

It is not something a parent should enjoy, but if it sculpts the child into a better person, I agree with it.

Children: Discipline and the Consequences or Lack Thereof
Time

It seems the more years go by, the more laws go against traditional discipline of children.

When I was a child, you still had to be good, or you would get a whippin'.

Around the late 90's it became a form of abuse to whip a child, so "Time Out" became the new form of discipline.

Now it is to the point where looking at your child wrong can have you charged with child abuse.

My questions are:

Do you think it is better for the child to be raised without discipline?

Do you think parents are becoming too soft?

What consequences will come from discipline, or lack of discipline?

How where you raised?

I am not a parent, but I hope to someday.

I personally think this deserves it's own thread, so I might do it later.

Has anyone ever noticed how much Blade Runner has been ripped off and paid homage to?

Example:

Blade Runner:

Event Horizon:

I can't blame anybody for ripping it off. It was one of many great stylistic elements in the film.

Fifth Element borrowed so much from it, that it was almost comical, but it was a good film.

Blade Runner was a grand achievement. As an aspiring film director, I can see why someone would like to take some from it.

I refuse to accept this.  Not nearly old or grumpy enough.
All goofing aside, I really expected someone my age.  Funny how that is.  You read people for years and a sort of mental picture forms, based on nothing really.
I don't know if I'm less scared of him now that I think he's closer to my age, or more scared. He's certainly less scary than whatever old leprous guy he had a while ago.

"I am wondering.....why are you here?"

My question (yes, I'm finally getting around to it); Why is this place so different?  Other than the obvious (desire for OT), why is this the place of choice for open, intelligent Star Wars discussions?

I can't say exactly why I joined this site, because there are so many reasons. The most important one was the fact that I was agreeing with a lot of what you guys were saying.

I had never heard of anybody talking about the pre 97 Star Wars trilogy in such a light.

The feelings I had for the trilogy were being expressed by others.

You couldn't find that on any other board. Every where else it was a lot of Lucas worshiping, and the very hint that he did wrong resulted in a ban.

I don't know why I am so passionate about Star Wars, I can clearly see it's faults, and I honestly don't think it is perfect. Yet it is so embedded in my mind that I can't help it.

Every opinion is respected on here. You can't find that anywhere else.

Plus you guys are a lot nicer on here. I used to go on Heavy Metal boards and get treated like a cancer for saying not being metal enough. Here, you can like the prequels and still be treated with the same respect as the guy who hates the prequels.

So, ... how long are we supposed to leave our avatars like this?
I think I'm switching back next week.

But this is fun while this lasts.
A week sounds good.

And here I was thinking this was a permanent change to board culture... a step towards a more open and personable site.  :(

I am keeping mine, at least until I get bored with it. Don't know about doing any themes though.

Might have to take a new picture when I don't have a big zit on my forehead.

I used a hi-res matte painting for that shot, so you can actually see more of the painting than in the SE. That's why I want the other matte paintings. It also made me realize, that unless I get a new computer, which is not likely to happen any time soon, I won't be able to make any edits in a resolution higher than 720p, because the painting was 1600x1200 and the computer just wasn't able to deal with it properly, so full HD video is out of the question in After Effects for me.

720p looks marvelous on a 42 inch tv, so I'll be more than happy with it.

I'm not sure whether that's a compliment or an insult, so I choose to take it as a compliment ;-D

I just like that picture, though it is a bit out of date, I've got a bit of a beard situation going on now :-)

I'm not really a badass at all though, smartass, maybe, but not a badass :-D
Compliment, definitely. It may be the cigarette, or the sideburns. You look like you could kick my ass.

He's definitely got the Cowboy Bebop vibe going for him.

This is how I like to see it. I remembered Star Wars being a very colourful film as a child, yet digitally it hasn't been either washed out or blue.

Now everything has depth, it looks like people are actually there. People look like they actually have blood flowing through them. Skin Tones are more natural.

I can't wait for this.

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

Been playing Syberia and Syberia II all week. I gotta say, aside from how frustrating getting around is, it was a very solid and intelligent game. It reminded me of Lucasarts games from the 90's.

I was disappointed with Syberia II though. I felt it ended to abruptly, where Syberia ended on a solid note.

I hope Syberia III has more to do. Hopefully they keep the formula of the first 2, with some slight tweaks, and more to do. I wouldn't mind a freer roaming game.
