Musical Obsessions
Time

I think movies, politics, and religion get covered quite heavily in here, but there isn't a place to really talk in depth about music. Sure there is the classic rock page, but music is so much more vast than that. And last song listened to doesn't really cover the whole of music.

Tell me what band you've been digging lately, or what album you cannot resist playing several times over. Use the last movie seen format if you want, and review an album, or even a concert if you had the pleasure of going to such a thing. Any genre welcome, even if the piece is ancient.

And if you want to, tell me about something you listened to that you didn't like. As long as you listened to it. It could be from a band you used to like, or a band you never liked. It can be a single song, album, or their entire discography if you see fit.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

I told him that it was the law for me to be given breaks every so many hours of work with a lunch. He told me it didn't apply to me, because I was on contract. What is interesting was that a box for lunch was left empty on my time log, so I supposedly was allowed to get one.

The job is in Texas, and I think they probably get away with a lot of that shit, because our workforce isn't Texas workers, it's immigrant labor. I have nothing against our immigrant workforce, I find it ironic that the same people condemning them, are the ones who exploit them. The owner did say he had several businesses before including a lawn-care service and maid service. So I have a grasp on what kind of people he has under him.

I have no issues with hard work. I applied for the job, because it was physical.

Maybe I'll find my rhythm in life, right now I'm just taking chances and making a lot of bad decisions. My 20's are ebbing away pretty quick.

Thanks man! The owner and the manager are old buddies. I'm sure the owner knows, because I've been like the 3rd or 4th replacement within the last little while. The manager was also a good 30 minutes late on my first day. The owner also played down how big of an ass the guy was by saying "he can be a little difficult to work with".

I wasn't getting any of those bad vibes from the guy on the first house we worked on. It's like he turned into an ass on the last house.

I got fired on my first day. First time that's ever happened. Supposedly you're not allowed to sit down during a break. It was a 13 hour shift, 30 some degrees, wet, and I was wearing dress clothes, because the owner of the place didn't bother to tell me that it wasn't going to be an orientation, and that I was going to be getting into the gritty work of power washing houses.

I bit my lip and took it most of the day, until about a few hours to the end of my day. I ended up doing most of the work on the last house, while the manager stood around and shot the shit with the owner of the house, while standing within 5 feet of me.

A while later, I was told that if I finished 4 sections of the driveway, I could take a break, and the manager would do 4 sections. I see he's off on his own somewhere, so I do six, just to keep busy. I see him come back, and he takes over. So I take the break I was told I could have. I grab my lunchbox and try to eat the lunch I was never told to have. I was in the truck for 2 minutes, and I hear screaming. I open up the door, and the guy was saying "I'm not gonna let you sit on your ass while I do all the work!" I give this man the look of death, and said "You told me I could have a break, what the fuck else was I gonna do on my break?" and he stumbled over his own pompous tongue "You could organize the fucking toolbox"....this being the toolbox this asshole threw cigarette packs and chip bags in. He continued "When my workers don't work, when I'm working, I call the owner, and tell him to fire their ass" I was fed up at that point. "Call him!", I didn't give a shit for once. I believe in hard work, but you can't win with people like this. So he grabs his cellphone and walks off. Keep in mind, I wasn't in my own vehicle during this job, as it was locked up in the storage unit where our equipment was held.

So I stood in the cold, my nice clothes ruined with bleach, and at the complete mercy of an asshole who fired me. I had to stand and watch him, so HE could drive me back to get my truck.

He not once looked at me, until the ride to the storage unit. He tried to play the whole thing off, like it wasn't as bad as all that. I wanted to hit him so hard, but I wanted to get in my vehicle and go home. I was done. He had the nerve to tell me what time to get started the next day, I laughed at him.

The owner later called and tried to get me to come back, but I knew I would always be at the mercy of a man like that. I couldn't stomach answering to a guy like that, so I declined. So I was fired, and quit all within the same 2 hours.

The best classic rock album of all time.

^If you liked Sultans of Swing, this album is full of songs like that. Most of the songs were written for performing in pubs, so it has that charm. Their later albums were really good, but I find the simplicity of their first one the best.

Mark Knopfler brings that wonderful guitar playing to every album he makes, but the first 3 albums he did with Dire Straits focus on it more. He's more of a songwriter these days.

I read Holes once. I've forgotten pretty much all of it, though. And I never saw the movie.

It wasn't a terrible movie, of course I was in my teens when it came out, and had already been a fan of the book.

It was back when Sleepy LaBeef was an enthusiastic young actor, with a certain likeable quirkiness.

He later became Shia LaBeouf, an ass HOLE.

She's a classically trained musician, from what I've heard about her. I just haven't heard it in her music. Being a great musician and singer still isn't guaranteed to make good music.

It reminds me of listening to some of these virtuoso guitar players, who can play any scale thrown at them, but it becomes boring after 5 minutes, because the shock value of their skill has wore off.

I'm not saying it's not entertaining, it just doesn't hold my attention for very long.

It's actually kind of funny, but Jim fought being the poster boy for the band. The more he shunned that spotlight, the brighter it seemed to shine. He really wanted to be treated as a poet instead of a rockstar. I'm of the mind, that if you don't want to be a rockstar, don't play rock n roll.

There are countless musicians who are like that, who become bigger for not trying to be big. Then you have people who would give anything to be famous, and will do whatever it takes to achieve that. That's why you've got your Lady Gagas and your Miley Cyruses dressing skimpy and causing a bit of controversy to get the masses to look their way. Both, I'm sure are very talented, but their gimmick outshines their talent, to the point where the people that might've appreciated them, have already decided they don't like them. So they focus on selling to that lowest common denominator.

Quick question about Sergio Leone films for Spaghetti Western fans...
Time

This thread might be your best bet.

The way the releases seem to work. If you get one with a good audio mix, it has a terrible picture.

The latest release of GBU looks like somebody rubbed mustard on the lens.

The Mondo features better picture, but only in Italian.

Most recommend the German edition for the first 2 dollars films.

You could talk to TheHutt and kk650, as they have done a lot of work on GBU. Probably the best way to see the film, in my eyes.

It's like how colorful the walls of the death star are. If that was filmed today, it would be filtered to the point that the only thing with relatively any color would be the flesh tones, and even they would be desaturated quite a bit. 100 bucks says JJ Abrams is gonna be adding all that heavy filter shit to the new film. He might be shooting in film, but that means nothing about how it will end up looking in post.

thread to continue the sex/gore in movies/tv dicussion from the Random Thoughts thread
Time

War movies don't try to sicken you like a film such as Saw or Audition does. It's the same with a sex scene. I don't mind sex scenes or nudity, but there's a fine line between sex to support the story and story to support the sex. Many films just throw in a long drawn out sex sequence for the sake of it.

It's kind of like Game of Thrones. I enjoy the show, but every five minutes somebody is doing some raunchy doggystyle rompin, and it serves no purpose other than to fill HBO's titties 'n' ass quota. I can think off of the top of my head and only count maybe 2 or 3 sex scenes that actually moved the story forward.

It doesn't bother me all that much, but it does get ridiculous. Sex scenes are kind of like a commercial break. If I want to watch porn, I will watch the good stuff.
