TR-47? Is that supposed to mean something significant? could someone clue me in on this?

As far as I know TR-47 used to be a member here. He sold laserdisc transfers (and maybe other stuff) from people here on sites like ebay, and I think he was banned. So now he's not too popular in these parts.

I believe RemixerBoss is saying he IS TR-47. I'm guessing his edit was his way of holding up a mirror to us so that we can all see how rediculous we look. I hope that gave him some deep satisfaction.

Tellan,

In your latest clip, it looks like the shot from behind is your CG version, whereas the shot from the front is the original DVD version. Is that correct?

I know you said you'll go back to the original DS, but I just wanted to point out that the shadow on the DS you used doesn't match the shadow on the planet.

And I'm curious, can you recommend a program to view your clips at the correct aspect ratio?

Thanks!

OK. Can someone with megaupload, yousendit, or rapidshare access PM me, so we can get Infodroid's clip uploaded?

You can't upload it? Why?

The file is 118 MB. I've never used any of those sites, and I assume I need some kind of paying account to upload something that big. I don't won't to kill my own website's bandwith with this file.

I did however find pretty much every single clip Adywan has posted here, as well as an assortment of other crazy stuff I have collected through the years. I'll still keep an eye out for the clip, it might be on a disk in my basement, buried under Christmas decorations.

I think I may have found InfoDroid's clip, named "duel.avi". The date is right (12/5/05), and the size is a whopping 120 MB or so (iirc). Does anyone know if this is the right one? InfoDroid?

jedi_jra,

Your cut of the duel between Anakin and Obi Wan has a lot of energy and removes just about all the stupid stuff and fluff, but it feels a bit disjointed. A few recommendations:

1) The places where you've joined two parts of the duel are sometimes a little jarring. Either place some of the generic lava footage inbetween these shots, or cut away to something else for a moment.

2) Speaking of cutting away, can we not have just a little of the Yoda/Palpatine duel? I agree it stinks, but I think we need to see something, so that we can see that Yoda actually put up a fight and how he got away.

3) Personal nitpick: "That an end to your rule is. And not short enough it was" These lines DRIVE ME CRAZY. They're so convoluted. And does Yoda really need to give us trash talk?

4) When the console that controls the lava shield is damaged, something about the way it was edited didn't seem right. I think you show the slash, and then there's an immediate cut to a close up with blinking warnings, then a view of the shield failing, then back to the saber fight. Maybe just a little cutting up of this so it's not all at once would help.

____________

GoodMusician,

The work you've done is impressive and has a nice flow. But I think you should put the cockpit shot back the way it was. When the ship leaves, we see it moving right to left, and I think that should continue in the cockpit view.

The Yoda visions were a good idea, but I think he shouldn't see things we've already seen - just foreshadowing. Maybe just the robotic hand and a brief vision of the Vader construction? The Qui Gon line is good, but its placement makes it hard to hear. Maybe put it in a silent portion where we just see Yoda's face in meditation.

but you've got it firing forwards.

OOOPS. Didn't notice that. i guess i need my glasses changed. I guess you have to be looking pretty close though to spot that so i might leave it as it is.

I also noticed this (before I read Tellan's comment).

Can you make the cannon fire toward the camera instead?

Having watched a second time, I think both the busyness and the TIEs on the readouts both look great and are appropriate. What I always hoped to see more of is the stuff that I always loved from RotJ, and that's the external shots of the ships swooping around firing at each other, and that's something that does come across as a bit lacking now, purely I think because modern audiences expect that sort of thing.

Adywan has added at least 2 wide shots that show the TIEs firing on the Falcon. They're short, but they're there.

Incidentally, on the shot where Han says "we're coming up on their sentry ships", it might be nice to see a star destroyer off in the background - those TIEs otherwise seem to come from nowhere.

I've always thought that the TIEs ARE the sentry ships.

If I were doing this scene again (and I'm not), I'd be tempted to draw out the battle a little longer and make it look as if the Falcon is taking heavier damage - maybe it's just me but there's no real sense of "threat" in this scene now (nor was there before). It would be nice to see some new ext. shots of the Falcon getting shot at and those shots doing some real damage (little explosions coming off the points where they hit, others getting absorbed the shield, adding some camera-rocking effects into some of the internal shots). Like I say, I'm not doing this scene, and I think the improvements that you've made, adywan, are immeasurable.

Again the wide shots show the Falcon getting shot at and taking damage. We see an explosion before they lose the "lateral controls". If you haven't seen the original version in a while, you might want to re-watch it to see just how much Adywan has really added.

Tellan,

The CGI ships and textures look good - at least as good as what lucas gave us in '97. But an action shot to see how they move would be much better to critique. Are you replacing/recreating both the flyby shots with your CG versions, or just the one from the front?

Maybe it's just me, but the tips of the lasers with the "scoopey" parts (that look like a cross section of a radar dish) look a little big.

Adywan,

Thought I'd add a few additonal thoughts on your latest clip.

I think the music for the duel works. I remember InfoDroid's version with this music, and I liked it back then too. For what it's worth, I vote you stick with it. Since the duel's pacing is pretty slow, I really think some action music is needed for a little extra oomph. And this track is totally appropriate.

My favorite thing about the dogfight is how you convey the movement of all the ships. In the official version, it almost looks like they put the Falcon in Park during the fight.

I love the new shimmering explosions and the enhanced HUD displays for the guns!

I was wondering about the movement of the starry background as viewed through the gunports. Despite the awesome visual impact, the Falcon is obviously not traveling at such a high speed that it would cause the stars to move like that. Is the star movement a result of the ship rotating during the battle?

And finally, I now realize I will have to find the biggest TV I can to watch this on when it comes out!

Hey! It's time for another one of my crazy ideas!

In my opinion, the closing shot of the movie should be the scene where Obi Wan drops off Luke on Tatooine. It's a beautiful scene to close with. And with Luke's last name in the OT, I think there's really no point in preserving any mystery about his parentage.

To stretch out the last bit of the movie so it's not so rushed, you can use an altered version of the opening shot from Episode IV:

http://www.erikstormtrooper.com/rots_luke_dropoff.jpg

Just flip the image, reposition the moon a bit, and crop out the Star Destroyer. (The Tantive IV is also upside down, but I don't think that's really noticable.) So now the Tantive IV is dropping off Obi Wan and Luke. Then in the next scene Obi Wan is delivering the baby to the Lars farm.

My first step into a larger world.... Splinter Of The Mind's Eye
Time
I haven't read Splinter since the early 80s. Maybe I should check it out again.

I remember my dad bought this book for himself, read it, then gave it to me. I was mesmerized by the cover. It really was weird that it had Darth Vader on the cover but didn't say "Star Wars". Before I took the plunge and read it (I was maybe 9 or 10), I continually asked my dad, "Is it REALLY a Star Wars book?"

Back in the mid 90s I tracked down a copy of Mission to Ord Mantell. I personally thought it was pretty lame.

Darkhelmet,

Glad to see you're back at it. I've checked out your clip, so lemme share some thoughts:

I was confused by your removal of Obi Wan's "You have done that yourself". Do you have a problem with that line? I quite like it.

The pace of the battle between Obi Wan and Anakin was much improved. I really enjoyed the removal of the bad dialog while lava surfing.

But once Anakin loses his limbs, the pace started to wander. Why doesn't Obi Wan pick up Anakin's saber? Why does he walk off before Anakin gets burnt?

I'm not so sure about your editing of the Yoda & Palpatine fight. I know you're trying to cut the sub-par parts, but it seems hard to understand how they get from dueling on the podium to throwing pods. In my opinion, this fight was superfluous, and poorly executed by Lucas. So you don't have too much to work with. (And can anyone tell me what's up with Yoda's cloak falling down? Is that supposed to signify something?)

The ending was just too rushed for me. I think you're probably trying to retain some of the surprises of the OT, but it felt too abrupt, and provided little to no closure on too many points. We go straight from seeing Padme in the medical center to her funeral. If you really want to cut things short, I suggest cutting the medical center scene completely.
