Were Lucas to release a restored version of the oot on blu ray, or in the cinemas would the divided fanbase be reconciled.
Would George be forgiven for the special editions and prequels ?
I think the SEs would be forgiven if the OOT were released on blu-ray.
But I don't know what could earn forgiveness for the Prequels.
I can scan it for you if you'd like (thought it may take me several days to get to it). I don't know off hand how useful it might be.
Do you have the Cinescape Insider Star Wars Special Report (from around 1996)?
Jambe,
This article might be of some use to you:
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2011/05/23/raiders-of-the-lost-ark-30-years-later-a-stuntmans-on-the-set-diary/
This is an interview with Vic Armstrong, who was Harrison's stunt double in many movies, including Raiders.
Awesome, Harmy. It's getting hard to control my excitement for this.
Thanks for posting this, none. Very interesting.
That's definitely the blue one. Here's a guess: maybe they shot some with the regular R2 and a black background.

Well, I did try to tone it down but you can't do much because otherwise you're doing so at the expense of other colours.
Thanks!

Well, what I'm seeing is that in GOUT the blue is overall of more purple tone (on R2, the pod and the sky) which I think is caused by the red shift of GOUT.
Harmy, did you end up doing any more tweaking to the overly-blue R2 in the desert scenes?
While I agree the red shift of the GOUT was probably dulling some blues, the particular shot in the desert has obviously been boosted beyond typical color adjustment. It has the same kind of glowing blue that we see when R2 is in space. R2 is not supposed to be that blue.
Interesting tidbit: An original R2 was used in the "George Lucas Super Live Adventure" in Japan in 1993. I remember reading that people were constantly asking why R2 was black. Of course he wasn't black, but his original dark blue came across as black under certain lights. So to solve the problem of the original R2 not looking right, they painted him blue!
I believe the latest blu-ray of The Evil Dead was created from a 16mm print.
Adywan, happy birthday and congrats on being a grandfather! (sorry I'm late)

Thank you for checking the WP out and for giving me your feedback exactly the way I asked, you win the prize of the best WP reviewer so far ;-)
Cool. You know where to send the check, right?
;-)
Here's another OT.com thread with some additional details on "Special Effects":
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/IMAX-film-Special-Effects/topic/2639/
Harmy, here's the rest of my review:
40:30 - Gout seems to cut to Mos Eisley view just a frame later than Despecialized Edition. (no biggie, just something I noticed)
40:43 - Your re-created background of Mos Esiley seems to be a little less sharp than I remember seeing in your clips.
48:50 - I know you've already worked miracles with this scene. I just wish there was a way to reduce the jumpiness of the GOUT footage.
49:41 - The double wipe is still too noticeable. Can you do any more with GOUT footage, like blend it in as the fade gets darker?
1:21:10 (and 1:21:17) - Can the previous shot of the falcon in the hangar (which you restored beautifully) be zoomed in and used here?
1:25:40 - Obi Wan's saber seems to suffer from a small well-defined tip that extends beyond the fuzzy glow.
1:27:32 - Strange blue haze around the falcon's engines. Maybe that's supposed to be there, but it looks weird. It reminds me of the blue haze in the SE's death star explosion.
1:29:02 - Garbage matte around TIE is particularly noticeable. I hope you can tone this down.
1:55:29 - Sound drops off before credits finish. You probably know this though ;)
These are the only faults I can find. Otherwise, this is spectacular, and will probably be the only version (other than Revisited) that I allow to be shown in my house. Thanks!
If they shot Empire of Dreams on 16mm film, wouldn't an HD version be possible?
Love the new red sky.
I vote for the delayed crawl.
I've enjoyed this discussion, since it made me think about things a little differently.
In spite of the disagreements, I think Matt_S has made some good points. He's been articulate and well behaved, even if a little repetitious. He hasn't taken his toys and run home.
If Lucas released what Matt_S is proposing, my guess is that 99% of Star Wars fans would be cool with it. The 1% that still clamored for a pure unaltered release would look pretty ungrateful to the other 99%. Regardless of right or wrong, I think that's a valid observation.
Harmy,
I've only made it 30 minutes into the workprint so far, but I had a few comments:
8:52 and 9:27 - too much blue on R2 (and pod). This is a flaw of the SE where they really punched up R2's blue.
10:47 - GOUT sky is more blue than SE (Many scenes on Tatooine suffer from this. Another example is at 16:10).
25:29 - The GOUT sky in this shot is RED. It was corrected to blue for the SE. Do you want to revert to red?
More to come.
I just finished listening to the forcecast. Very good showing, Jambe. Thanks for putting forward some well articulated thoughts on the original versions.
Cool. Thanks for taking the time to answer all of my annoying questions.
;) <------
That's totally understandable.
Will you be darkening the blacks in the starfields of the GOUT upscales at all? One of the things I noticed in the despecialized X-Wing approach was how much deeper the darkness of space was, compared to the GOUT.

Let's move back to a concrete example- Ady's ESB Reconstructed. Only looks and plays like the original. Benefits from some recomp, etc. If that were officially released, would you be happy?
I'd be happy with that if all the parts were in 1080p. It wouldn't be ideal, but it would be more than we have now. (My expectation for LFL has gotten lower and lower over the years.)
But I think we're creating a HIGHLY unlikely scenario here. Why would LFL go through the trouble of reworking the original versions? That would take more effort than a simple scan (what we want). And that would put them on equal footing with the SE. I think we can all agree Lucas has decided to give the OOT as little effort as possible, so that the SE will remain the superior product.
Harmy,
In the past you said you'd be using straight upscales of the GOUT for the battle of Yavin shots. But with the success you had replacing the starfield in the shot of the X-Wing approach, have you reconsidered?

We've heard before they they're not allowed to comment on it, I've always found that interesting. Someone high up has seen it and knows enough about it to brand it as subversive. I'm pretty sure they're forbidden to help us, which will make expanding the battle in RotJ much more difficult.gurgle1624 said:
I went to a 501st gathering at a Cure for Cancer event and I was asking if any of them had seen the Revisited version and what they thought about it, some said they cant comment but one trooper took off his helmet and inside right next to the right ear peice was a small (and I mean small) sticker that said Revisited, I thought that was great, he didnt say anything but I got the meaning behind it. I dont understand what Lucas problem is (if its him telling the 501st not to comment or if its just certain individuals) but he should take it as a huge compliment for what Adywan has done to further peoples interest or rekindle interest in the Star Wars brand.
As a member of the 501st, I've never heard anything like this.

On a happier note, I should have the first complete workprint by the end of the week, so if anyone was interested in testing for me, I'd be glad.
