What I do know is that I don't know anything, and I think that's fantastic. There's a mystery to it all now. What's happened since ROTJ? What's going to happen? Nixing the EU opens the universe up to millions of possibilities. The excitement and wonder of seeing a new and unknown Star Wars film is back for the first time in 32 years. That certainly makes it all worth it.

 Exactly. A million times this.

REALLY !!!! You don't believe its about the $$$$$$ Eric ? What's the color of the grass in your little galaxy. Its always about the money !!

...

There is no other answer "sorry Eric but its the truth".

Of course it's about money. That's why new films are being made. But they didn't throw out the EU because of money, they threw out the EU so the new movies would be comprehensible to audiences.

Also, no need to be such a dick about it.

I understand Disney's point of view to a point . But why not just let them go and ignore the books like Star Trek did and still dose ?

Is...is that not exactly what they're doing? They just made it official that they were ignoring the books, and further are making it official that they're NOT ignoring any future books.

So, what, you'd be okay with it if they didn't make an official statement that the old books are being ignored, but since they made it official it's suddenly a shitty thing for them to do? I don't get that at all.

Well, what did you expect them to do? The new movie had to be set ~30 years after ROTJ, meaning if they kept the EU as is, they'd have been dropping new viewers - the vast majority of whom haven't read a single bit of EU material - into the story somewhere after the end of the New Jedi Order series. That's a lot of story to try to catch new viewers up on, with a lot of new characters.

It's better for them to start fresh, and not have to worry about not contradicting a bunch of existing material that, frankly, contradicted itself all the time anyway. Besides, Lucas always said that the post-ROTJ EU wasn't what his post-ROTJ vision was either, and the sequel trilogy is based on his outlines.

It's not "all about the $$$$$$$$," it's about starting with a clean slate to give us the best possible Episodes VII-IX they can without having to force them in with existing continuity that will just confuse 95% of the audience.

I guess the way I should have asked is "has Disney stopped the books from continuing the story from the Crucible & Fate of the Jedi series" .

Yes, and none of that is canon anymore.

Canon as it currently stands is:

  • The Movies (Episodes I-VI, the sequel trilogy, the upcoming standalone movies, and the 2008 The Clone Wars movie)
  • The Clone Wars (2008 series, including the four "animatic" episodes that were unfinished; the 2003 series is no longer canon)
  • Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir (Limited comic series)
  • Rebels (TV series & pre-series shorts)
  • A New Dawn (novel)
  • Tarkin (novel)
  • Ezra's Gamble (junior novel)
  • Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy (junior novel)
  • "One Thousand Levels Down" (short story)
  • "Blade Squadron" (short story)
  • "The End of History" (short story)

And everything from here on out will be canon, EXCEPT FOR future expansions to The Old Republic.

Upcoming canon material:

  • Star Wars (ongoing Marvel comic; starts this month)
  • Untitled Rebels junior graphic novel (February)
  • Darth Vader (ongoing Marvel comic; starts in February)
  • Servants of the Empire: Rebel in the Ranks (junior novel; March)
  • Princess Leia (ongoing Marvel comic; starts in March)
  • Kanan (ongoing Marvel comic; starts in April)
  • Heir to the Jedi (novel; March)
  • Lords of the Sith (novel; April)
  • Dark Disciple (novel based on unproduced The Clone Wars material; July)
  • Battlefront (video game; late 2015)

And probably some more Rebels-era junior and young adult novels.

I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT that the decanonization of everything else doesn't mean that it's completely wiped from continuity - though it seems likely that this is exactly the case for post-ROTJ stuff. But for prequel-era or earlier stuff, or even some post-ROTJ material, the writers are free to incorporate characters and events from the old EU, bringing them stories into the new canon.

The best example of this is Darth Bane - while the trilogy of books about him and his creation of the Rule of Two is no longer canon, his spirit (or something) appeared in an episode of The Clone Wars and mentioned the creation of the Rule of Two, so at least some of the Darth Bane Trilogy happened in the new canon. But the writers are free to change stuff this way - events may no longer have unfolded exactly how they did in the no-longer-canon novels, but that doesn't mean the stories full-stop never happened.

Hope this helped!

    Looking forward to 2.0!

Can I make a request for the MKV version? In that you crop out the black bars when encoding it? I don't always play everything back on a 16:9 screen, so it would be nice to scale it horizontally rather than vertically like Star Wars 2.1/Empire 2.0

Like CatBus said - if you crop out the black bars, it's no longer Blu-Ray compatible, like the MKV version of ANH ReSpecialized. I really don't think Harmy is going to release a non-BR-compliant MKV (and I hope he doesn't).

Wow, only 3GB? Must be downscaled to SD or lower, too, I'd guess.

Yeah, as others have said, the official Harmy releases of SW v2.5 are an ~18GB MKV and an ~8GB AVCHD (for burning to a dual-layer DVD and watching on a Blu-Ray player). There's also a ~4GB single-layer DVD re-encode that was done with Harmy's blessing, but not by Harmy himself, that has the 5.1 AC3 as the only audio track. And it's in DVD format (VIDEO_TS folder, or maybe an ISO image, not sure which), not a single AVI or MP4 or anything like that.

Anyway, I did not know that Clone Wars had a yellow lightsaber; that's pretty cool.

A couple, actually. Ahsoka's yellow saber is a shorter one she uses along with her full-sized green one, so it sometimes looks greenish-yellow, though I attribute that to either the fact that it's always seen next to the green one, or the background color fucking with the saber glow.

Here's Ahsoka with both of her lightsabers fighting a Mandalorian with an ancient proto-lightsaber ("darksaber" or something):

And then there's the Jedi Temple guards with yellow lightsabers - they're only seen toward the end of Season 5 though:

Not really relevant to your project so much, but these are the only canon examples of lightsaber colors other than blue, red, green, or purple (which is why I threw in the "darksaber" as well, even though it wasn't really part of the discussion).

One saber color change I wouldn't mind would be Dooku's, especially if you've removed direct references to his Darth Tyranus/Sith alter-ego. It would help make him a more complex character, and make you think on a re-watch that maybe his conversation with Obi-Wan in hover-jail was him being 100% honest, and maybe the separatists were actually the *good* guys...

Of course, this breaks continuity with The Clone Wars even more than changing Windu's saber color does.

(I'm also all for yellow sabers. I got a little over-excited during season 3 of TCW when Ahsoka lit up her second lightsaber ... and it was yellow! So happy yellow lightsabers are canon, and I'd love to see more of them.)

The 35mm footage still needs some stabilization, but beyond that it looks INCREDIBLE! Very clean and clear all the way through, and the colors look great too.

I'm actually surprised at how much I'm looking forward to ROTJ v2.0 seeing as how it's my least favorite of the original trilogy.

Thanks for giving us a taste of what's to come! Can't wait to see more!

Okay, this will be difficult to parse with [REDACTED] everywhere, so there will be MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE SERIES 8 FINALE IN THE REST OF THIS POST.

    I MEAN IT. MAJOR SPOILERS.

YOU SURE YOU WANT TO KEEP READING?

    REALLY?

DON'T COME WHINING TO ME IF YOU KEEP READING AND GET SPOILED.

    LAST CHANCE TO BACK OUT!

    ...

    Okay, here goes:

I personally never felt like the John Simm Master was a real threat, even when he had ostensibly "beaten" the Doctor. In fact, the last Master I felt was a true threat (outside of Big Finish)? Roger Delgado. And even his level of threatening...ness... diminished over time.

Now, Michelle Gomez? What she did to Osgood immediately made me take the Master seriously again in a way I never did in Series 3 or The End of Time. Sure, I was very sad to see Osgood go, especially so matter-of-factly, but I really do think it helped solidify "Missy" as a real, honest-to-god danger to the Doctor and, well, the whole world.

I completely understand being upset at the character's demise, and I'm not trying to say that you shouldn't be. I'm just saying I don't think it was wholly unnecessary - in fact, Death in Heaven woudln't have been nearly as effective for me without that scene.

I don't really think Clara was "re-written" in Series 8. I think she had basically no characterization in Series 7, and she was actually given some in Series 8.

Having said that, I never disliked Clara in S7. But the way her character was rounded out in S8 has made her one of my favorite new-Who companions (behind only Wilfred and Rory).

And Anchorhead, whatever you think of Clara's S8 characterization, there are some fantastic episodes in S8. If you just want to get to the meat of the S8 story, here's what you need to see:

    1. 801 Deep Breath
    2. 802 Into the Dalek
    3. 804 Listen
    4. 806 The Caretaker
    5. 807 Kill the Moon
    6. 808 Mummy on the Orient Express
    7. 809 Flatline
    8. 811 Dark Water
    9. 812 Death in Heaven
    10. Last Christmas

I will admit that Kill the Moon isn't exactly a highlight of the season (nor is Into the Dalek), but it contains important character development/story arc advancement. Flatline is less central to the story/character arcs, but it's perhaps the best episode of S8, so DEFINITELY watch it.

I skipped 810 In the Forest of the Night because, while it contains something that could be considered important Danny/Clara arc advancement, it's not brought up much in the episodes that follow, and Forest is widely considered to be a poor episode.

Also, IIRC, the MKV with DTS audio has the letterboxing cropped out, so it's something like 1280x544 instead of 1280x720. So you can't just remux the MKV to a BD-compliant stream, since it isn't the correct size. Which is why Harmy recommended using the AVCHD video stream with the DTS audio - the AVCHD is 1280x720 with black letterboxing, and therefore BD-compliant.
