What Went Wrong/What Can Be Avoided Thread

I call "bullshit" on that.

Unless, of course, you've got some sort of worldwide survey of Star Wars fans to present to the forum (and I mean Star Wars fans, not simply your ten favourite internet-hoggers) in which case I'd happily look at your evidence with an open mind. If you've the time, of course (that is, when you're not editing extra snowspeeder pilots into The Empire Strikes Back to make it a better movie).

What can be avoided in the new films has, sadly, already happened. Abrams (the man with no first name who seems to spend more time complaining about missing his family than he does talking about the new films; why didn't he take a job that meant he'd never have to travel?) looks to be more concerned with paying lip-service to the fans on the internet by placating them with remarks about practical effects (yawn) than following in the footsteps of a man who pushed at the limits with every iteration of the Star Wars saga.

Kasdan (who has already said that he doesn't believe the fans care about half the of things that are discussed ad nauseum on the internet) needs to have a word.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I think it was essential to show Vader's face at the end - to not have done that would have been a cop out and Sebastian Shaw's scene does bring closure to the story of Anakin. As you say, that was the whole point of ROTJ. And the notion that fans would never look at Vader quite the same again...well, again, that was the point.

I think it's a stretch to say that Kersh was saying the prequels shouldn't have been made, though. After all, he'd directed a film whose subtitle was Episode V - he must have known that Lucas would, at some point, make films beyond the original trilogy.

So, does this mean the dark side didn't exist until the Sith did?

No. The Jedi simply perceive anyone who "goes bad" as being Sith. It's only the same as Christians who believe people will go to hell for doing bad things, or the Buddhist notion of sowing seeds of bad kharma. Ergo, to a Jedi, someone like Count Dooku is a Sith; to a non-Jedi, he's just a bloke who does bad things.

Thanks.

It is a great read. I do like Dave Filoni. He really had his work cut out for him with TCW as Lucas would make pretty tall orders - bringing back Darth Maul, for instance - and leave it to Filoni and his team to work out how to pull off such ideas. I remain a firm fan of TCW and feel it was a great extension of the prequels, continuing the feel of those films whilst also bringing something to the mix that the prequels lacked: chemistry.

Now, it seems Rebels is going to be a lot more like the OT, dropping the darkness of TCW (political-heavy storylines and Anakin's troubling dark side) for the breezy style of episodes four-to-six. Definitely something to look forward to.

You know... I just don't remember the chewbacca tarzan yell at all In Jedi; I'm not sure if it was in the original or added in the SE. But that's me: I didn't even remember the Greedo shoots first scene when I saw the SE in theaters.

Yes, it's always been there. It's nowhere near as funny as his offscreen guffaw when Threepio translates the Ewoks believing that he is "some sort of god" though.

What?

By striking down Vader in anger, you're saying that those means would achieve the end of the Emperor and his empire. And I'm saying you're wrong, based on... well, take your pick, really, from various lines of dialogue throughout the films about striking out in anger and using your powers for attack, not knowledge or defence.

I highly doubt ROTJ would be much different film in its core. After all it was still Lucas who was creative director behind ESB and ROTJ...I think in its core ROTJ would be the same whether Lucas stayed at home during principal photography or ran around the sets. He may let Kershner freely direct actors in ESB, but he didn't let him do any major changes to what he cooked up in the pre-production. So as you said, there would probably be clashes if Kershner tried to change anything for ROTJ which would probably have negative effect on the film. Those who think Ewoks would not be in the film are just naive.

Kersh did say, though, that he would never have shown Vader's/Anakin's face in ROTJ. I think that would have been a mistake.

Am I the only one who hates how everyone who turns to the dark side joins the Sith? It makes absolutely no sense to me. You don't switch sides upon becoming a bad person.

No, you don't. And there are plenty of characters who are bad guys in Star Wars who neither turn to the dark side or join the Sith. But joining the dark side is equivalent to becoming a Sith; that's what crossing over to the dark side means.

So, if you hate that concept, chances are it's because you don't understand it, maybe?

Wow, I'd almost forgotten how negative Star Wars fans can be!

I think the trailer has enough of a Star Wars feel to it to make this appealing. That and the fact that much of the same team from the excellent The Clone Wars series is behind this gives me a lot of hope. I'm certainly looking forward to this a lot more than the new films.

I like the sound of The Ancient Fear as a title (I nabbed the fake episode three title The Creeping Fear for my own version of episode seven some time ago). And I think Max Von Sydow should play the titular villain.

Reservations remain fully intact, though, on account of there being an absence of a certain bespectacled, bearded bloke in a lumberjack shirt from the photo of the read-through released last week

As an uber Genesis nerd since the 70s, this is a subject that is very big in my world.  Way too many to list, so I'll just drop in a few of my favorites.

<img src="http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f20/stonetriple/Genesis/07lamb.jpg" />

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Colony Of Slippermen</span>

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">
</span>

The Arrival

Rael:
I wandered lonely as a cloud,
Till I came upon this dirty street.
I've never seen a stranger crowd;
Slubberdegullions on a squeaky feet,

Continually pacing,
With nonchalant embracing,
Each orifice disgracing
And one facing me moves to say "hellay".

His skin's all covered in slimy lumps.
With lips that slide across each chin.
His twisted limbs like rubber stamps
Are waved in welcome say 'Please join in.'

My grip must be flipping,
Cos his handshake keeps slipping,
My hopes keep on dipping
And his lips keep on smiling all the time.

Slipperman:
"We like you, have tasted love.
Don't be alarmed at what you see,
You yourself are just the same
As what you see in me."

Rael:
Me, like you? like that!

Slipperman:
"You better watch it son, your sentence has only just begun
You better run and join your brother John."

A Visit to the Doktor

Slipperman:
"You're in the colony of slippermen.
There's no who? why? what? or when?

You get out if you've got the gripe
To see, Doktor Dyper, reformed sniper-
he'll whip off your windscreenwiper

Rael:
John and I are able
To face the Doktor and his marble table.

The Doktor:
Understand Rael, it's the end of your tail.

Rael:
"Don't delay, dock the dick!"
I watch his countdown timer tick......

The Raven

He places the number into a tube,
A yellow plastic "shoobedoobe".
It says: "Though your fingers may tickle
You'll be safe in our pickle."
Suddenly, black cloud comes down from the sky.
It's a supersize black bird that sure can fly.

The raven brings on darkness and night
He flies right down, gives me one hell of a fright.
He takes the tube right out of my hands
Man, I've got to find out where that black bird lands.

"Look here John, I've got to run
I need you now, you going to come?"
He says to me.

John:
"Now can't you see
Where the raven flies there's jeopardy.

We've been cured on the couch
Now you're sick with your grouch.
I'll not risk my honey pouch
Which my slouch will wear slung very low."

Rael:
He walks away and leaves me once again.
Even though I never learn,
I'd hoped he'd show just some concern.

I'm in agony of Slipperpain
I pray my undercarriage will sustain.
The chase is on, the pace is hot
But I'm running so very hard with everything I've got.
He leads me down an underpass
Though it narrows, he still flies very fast,
When the tunnel stops
I catch sight of the tube, just as it drops.
I'm on top of a bank, to steep to climb,
I see it hit the water, just in time,
to watch it float away.

Yeah, Genesis really nailed it as being a narrative-driven prog rock band back in the day. They even had a decent stab at it on the last album with Collins with a good two or three songs returning to that style.

The Lamb is a defining moment in their career, though, and I've recently taken to listening to some of the bootlegs from that tour. Amazing story, doesn't entirely make sense but that's part of the fun of the thing.

The OT was never solely about the redemption of Darth Vader, or even about Luke becoming a hero. Watching the OT I was as much involved in the fight of the Rebels against the Empire as that of Luke's personal story. It wasn't just a background for other character events, rather it was a developing story all of its own.

The PT had none of this. Endless, poorly edited "battle scenes" for the characters supposedly doing something in while not on (horribly monotonous) sit and talk scenes. As RLM put it, people in the ST mostly just sit/walk and talk if not involved in bad CGI pew-pew nonsensical battles.

I don't mind seeing Anakin's fall tote Dark Side if it was one part of a larger story about how the Republic fell and the Empire came to be. One that made some sense and had an emotional impact for the viewer, that is.

Also, I seem to be in the small minority on this but seriously, Anakin became "evil" out of love?! That was not only cliché. It didn't make sense. Anakin should have become Darth Vader out of wanting power. Maybe of a misjudged sense that "his" way was better and had to be enforced even through power and terror; because he wanted vast fleets and armies to make the world as his will. Not because his wife was (supposedly) about to die at childbirth... eh...

What I'm most afraid about the Sequels is that they'll pull of the same soap opera routine as the Prequels did. Not a space adventure, not even a war story in space. Just plain afternoon episodic drama with some CGI crammed in.

Well, the OT is about Luke becoming a hero. I don't know why you think it isn't.

Anakin doesn't become evil. And wanting to stop people from dying is power. I seem to remember the novelisation of RoTJ saying something to the effect that Vader wasn't evil, he just lusted for power too strongly. Fits perfectly with the prequels as far as I can see.

See, wanting to stop your pregnant wife from dying is pretty emotional, especially when compared to the idea you posit, about wanting a bunch of spaceships, which wouldn't have had any emotional impact at all.
