The Simpsons
Time

The Simpsons now suck like a two-dollar cyborg whore with vacuum cleaner parts grafted to her mouth. Everyone in it has been defiled and turned into hideous caricatures; it's like somebody killed every single character in the show then buried them in the Pet Sematary, then flooded Springfield with Lucite to make it all shiny but stiff.

The Simpsons used to be my favourite show, but they violated it, cut and twisted it into this artificial freakshow; goddamn Matt Groening: television's answer to George Lucas.

...

Oh, and "bump".

I thought this was going to be a thread with horror fiction in it but with a TFN twist.

Don't worry - I've got one in the works. It's about a psychopath named Go-Mer-Tonic who hides his face behind a smug Han Solo mask and goes door-to-door in search of OOT fans to stab with his Knife of Condescension. I'm only on the rough draft, though, so it'll be some time before I've ironed all the kinks out and readied it for primetime.

The closest I ever got to being banned on TF.N was when I made a post stating that I didn't consider Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor canon, which sparked off an argument on personal canon and whether or not the term "personal canon" itself was an oxymoron, which culiminated with one of the mods making an implicit threat about how starting a "canon war" could lead to a ban.

In the end I conceded, coming to the conclusion that, yes, the term "personal canon" - if you go with the word "canon"'s strictest meaning - is an oxymoron. So now whenever I post on that forum I tend to use "personal continuity" instead of "canon" whenever I bring up the topic.

Still, that they made such a big scene out of the subject in the first place is ludicrous and an embarrassment.

I made a profile on TFN months ago, but not to get banned. I did it to speak my mind. Regardless of whether I get banned or not, I wanted to stand up and speak my mind instead of being a little pygmy on GL's tit.

I concur.

I do try to be deliberately snarky, though, when I post - to test the waters so to speak.

Well, not ALL of those threads you linked were bad - maybe a bit obsessive, but I see ridiculous shit like that all the time at Daizenshuu EX and I'm still a semi-regular.

Yeah, perhaps. Still, many of those questions are so pathetically stupid; questions like "Did Luke ever drive a landspeeder after leaving Tatooine?" or "Do Sith Lords ever sue their apprentices if they refuse to use red lightsabers?" would be of similar calibre. It's inane clutter.

SW.com closes down? Hopefully TFN can close down too!

No then the TFN guys might all migrate over here or something

And then you'd get threads like this popping up all the time.

Devil's advocate- I had another poster on a different forum say that all the creative energy that people put into Star Wars could be used to create their own stories without any baggage from Star Wars. But I love Star wars so much and its so flexible and mixes well with so many things.

Ah, yes ... the battle cry of fanboys everywhere. I notice, however, they never say that to fellow sycophants who choose to explore the SW Universe within the confines of Lucas' narrow vision; just those who are less than pleased with the PT ... Methinks they just don't like the idea that anyone could have a take on SW that doesn't mesh with Georgy's POV.

...

Steampunk Star Wars is full of win, BTW.

James Cameron, Jeffrey Katzenberg, George Lucas to Do CinemaCon Panel Together

Digital is like the invention of sound, 3D is like the invention of color. Sound changed everything in movies while color made it better. Just like when you see a 2D movie you’ll feel like you’re watching a black-and-white film. Ultimately everything will completely be in 3D.

Sound isn't better than silent, colour isn't better than B&W, and digital is not better than traditional. They are different mediums, but they are equal in every way, with their own particular strengths. All should coexist, with one never being discarded in favour of another.

Lucas can go screw himself. He's no artist; he's an fickle-minded vandal with a paint-filled Super Soaker.

Why does Qui-Gon say "no thought of self" right after talking about the possibility of "avoiding oblivion" while retaining consciousness, and DEMONSTRATING THAT HIMSELF WHILE HE'S SPEAKING?

I think this one at least can slide. Quiggy's talk about "no thought of self" is probably about the absence of desires for material pleasures, possessions, rewards, things like that.

Of course, the whole retain-your-personality-and-obtain-immortality thing smacks of "thought of self" so ...

Selflessness and continuing to exist are in now way at odds with eachother.

"Hey Dalai Lama! If you're so selfless how come you're eating that sandwich!?  And give me your shoes!"

There's only a contradiction if we, the fans, chose to intentionally interpret it in a way that is stupid.

We also don't have any systematic rules on how the afterlife works, so this is another example of fans making up rules that don't match the story, and then being angry that they aren't followed.

Hmm ... perhaps you're right. An active quest for immortality still kind of smacks of "sense of self" to me, but then ... well ...
