Info: 2006 GOUT DVD using 'Faces' PCM Sound?
Time
Well then, according to Moth3r's calculation, there's plenty of room to leave the great looking and sounding Star Wars menus on the DVD intact and still have the PCM track fit. All you have to do is make sure the video and audio bit-rates combined together that the player has to put out is within what a DVD player can handle. And, of course, make sure the audio from the Definitive Collection is synchronized with the video the same as the official DVD set. I guess if you match this time code that was referred to, you can match it to the precise tiniest fraction of a second.

Info: 2006 GOUT DVD using 'Faces' PCM Sound?
Time
If you take all the foreign languages and the lego junk off and just have the movie and the menus (I'd leave the menus, they are really cool ), even if there isn't enough room for the PCM soundtrack, there would definitely be enough room on a dual-layer DVD to take the PCM soundtrack and convert it into a straight 448k bit-rate DD 2.0 soundtrack, and then put that on the DVD as your only soundtrack. Which would sound much closer to the PCM track in quality. Then you just have to make sure the sound is sync'd up perfectly with the video, exactly the same as it is currently sync'd on the official DVD set.

Is the PCM soundtrack on the faces laserdisk set identical to the Definitive Collection laserdisk set?

If someone were to take the official DVD set and remove everything but the movie itself and the menus (which are very cool and should stay ), and then replace the English DD 2.0 soundtrack on the DVD with the PCM soundtrack from the Definitive Collection, it would make for the ultimate Star Wars DVD set till the XO project is ready. Those extras and foreign languages are a complete waste of space that could be used to squeeze in the PCM soundtrack. Or if the PCM soundtrack wouldn't fit without having to lower the bit-rate Lucasfilm used on the video (which would not be good to do), then convert the PCM to straight 448k bit-rate DD 2.0 for a DD 2.0 soundtrack with the maximum quality that DVD can support. That would definitely fit onto the dual-layer DVD.

The only thing is that you would have to be very careful to make sure the replacement soundtrack was in perfect sync with the video, exactly the same synchronization as it is now on the official DVD set. Other than that, it should be no problem.

Info Wanted: Will the 2006 Japanese OUT look better than the 2006 US OUT?
Time
Well, if I had to guess, shadow detail might be a bit better, because apparently the Japanese version of NTSC would allow more of the inherent detail on the laserdisk masters in darker areas of Star Wars scenes to be transferred to the DVD's intended to be sold in Japan. Of course, that's assuming there even is a Japanese version, which I have heard no mention of at all so far. A long as they don't burn the Japanese subtitles into the movie (i.e., subtitles can be completely removed from the t.v. screen by an option in the DVD menu), then this could be a useful additional source for preservation purposes.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time
Well, obviously strict security measures would have to be taken to ensure the print was kept safe from any uninvited guests while the required work was being done.

DarkGruson: If it can be proven through a trial run on some 35mm trailer film or such that this person you speak of has the skill, equipment and willingness to do a high quality scan of all three movies, then please get to it without further delay! Just make sure you bring plenty of big reliable hard drives with you to store the scans (which then must be backed up onto multiple sets of additional drives at several secure locations ASAP once you are safely off-site, so that it's effectively impossible for anything to happen to the scans once they are gotten). And, of course, keep all discussions of this private and tell only those who absolutely must know about it.

It would be fantastic if someone could scan in a good quality Star Wars print at 2k or 4k. Imagine what dedicated fans could do with something like that. Things would certainly be a lot simpler if Lucas would just stop the insane behavior and deliver a first-class transfer of the non-SE trilogy from the pristine fully restored master film prints. But if he won't, then someone else will.

I want to say how very impressed I am with the dedication and quality of the work from the X0 team! There is no doubt that the XO project will look vastly better and more accurate to the way Star Wars actually looked in theaters than this Sept. release. I certainly hope that this thread will stay open, the superior quality of the X0 project is not even comparable to what will be coming out. And thus the XO project qualifies as something very much still *not* available to fans.

Star Wars fans everywhere are very much indebted to the fine work of this team of true Star Wars fans! The degree of improvement that you fellows have achieved with your frame-by-frame restoration effort is just amazing in the few shots we've seen. I can't wait to see the whole thing in all it's dual-layer DVD maximum quality glory. Please keep the project going and let nothing stop you, you guys are working on a very noble and worthy effort, and we are all pulling for you!
