Now I'm confused. Is the idea to cut Jar-Jar out as much as possible?

Wouldn't it be jarring to cut out Jar-Jar in Episode II after playing such a prominent role in Ep. I?  Better or for worse, Jar-Jar is part of Star Wars.  My goal, like MagnoliaFan, was to try and change his character to make him as inoffensive as possible...even humorous.

I dislike Jar-Jar as much as the next guy, but can we cut him out completely in Ep. II?  If I can get this dub to work out, I think he could be a good character.

And by the way, I've spoken with Nanner Split and he has offered to try both English and alien for Jar-Jar.  So if we were to use the alien, it wouldn't be backwards audio or Spanish or anything like that...it would be newly recorded.

To be honest there are lots of characters that only really play a part in one movie, look at Grand Moff Tarkin, in a few scenes, played his part and thats it. That is what i feel Jar Jar should be, a werid character that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up getting dragged along in the adventure. I would always presume that Jar Jar would be welcomed back to the Gungan city and that was that. No need for him to be a big cog in the machine that is Star Wars, he doesnt need to be a main reason for the empire to take control. Seems like they needed a spot to fill and George sat there for a while a then said "I know!" and then continued to write the rest.

Some shots im testing...

Due the boring retro lighint setup of deathstar i thought to make some test renders of a more open and new BG that will match with the rest.

Plus Considering the camera stays in the same place all the time i can cheat pseudo altering the angle so no shot is the same with the previous.

You can notice the vignette effect that most of the top part of the shot/sets have. This need to be gone.

Also same set(ignore the extended bridge)

Also in the shootout sequence there are 7 same camera placed close shots and 3 long ones showing stormies .not to mention the hero ones.

i like the idea of the floor is more lighted and glowing like we see it when vader interrogates leia.

Now our heroes are further from the danger rather are only 10 meters from them.

Tried to make more uniform walls with less hard shadows.

Same..

The idea here was to move tarkin in the other side so he has "space" to look at his right.

Also moved for a more dramatic angle.

Brighten up the ship so now it looks a bit more realrather a bad lighted prop

Also note that this shot is the same when teh pod escapes. Only that the SD element is slight bigger.

here is a test of extending the shot/hangar so the camera can pan a bit. The idea is to simulate the awesome painting of mc quarrie and brake that cheap set piece of ANH

To remove 3p0 from the story, all we need to do visually is remove him from the interior space ship shots as Anakin and Padme decide to rescue Kenobi.

After that, I think we can cut around his shots entirely. As far as I recall, we only see him again on the same space ship telling R2 that he won't be going out to help save Anakin.

If we re-dub the grey, sun-baked protocol droid at Owen's farm with a robotic voice that is clearly NOT Anthony Daniels then he can simply be one of the droids on the farm. He can be at the funeral and even say the line, "He's carrying a message from an Obi Wan Kenobi. Does that name mean anything to you?"  It may work better coming from a different voice anyway.

Just saying. Not a big deal because TM has already made 3p0 so small in the movie that he almost causes no  pain. The biggest problem he poses in SOTDS is in attempting to un-do the idea that Anakin built 3p0. If we eliminate 3p0 altogether, it also makes this ambition possible. A new TPM edit could be done which eliminates 3p0 from that movie too. Hmm.

Have you seen the latest video from my edit? That's exactly what I've done, though it's not subtitled yet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecFqCjOuncI

And in regards to seeing him on the ship, it's easy to cut him out from him relaying the message from R2 onwards.

As much as i agree to redub c3po i don't think it should be a different language. Not to sound insulting but its stupid having and robot with a different language, they wouldnt do it. Im sure there as some other droid voices from different films and stuff to maybe construct a complete new sentence. something along the lines of:

Droid: hello, how may i be of service?

Anakin: I've come to see my mother

Droid hesitates

Droid: Please follow me

One definite change is that Grievous will be redubbed.  I remember seeing ROTS on opening night and being completely distracted by how stupid his voice was.  He needs a more sinister voice to make him into something other than a buffoon....

Something i did in the March of '09. Would you like to use this sound and redub the scene and place in on youtube. Someone did it once and then i got took off. Would like to see it again.

Something that bothered me (one of very, *very* few things, mind you), is the whole "Jedi Master Si-dyas(or whatever)"...now, I understand the inherent problem of "Sifo-dyas", but in this case, are we meant to take that there literally was a Master Sidious? Was he *the* Sidious posing as a Jedi? Obi-wan's line suggesting past knowledge of this person keeps this bugging me....If it's meant simply to be a Jedi with a name similar to the Sith's, it seems not to be an improvement over 'Sifo Dyas'...a completely different-sounding name may be better...or perhaps (more like, almost certainly) I'm missing the point...

I think the name should of been Qui Gon. Dooku poses as his own apprentice.

INTERIOR: TIPOCA CITY, PRIME MINISTER OFFICE - DAY

The door slides open. OBI-WAN and TAUN WE enter and cross
to where LAMA SU rises, smiling, from his chair, which,
like all the furniture on Kamino, seems made out of pure
light.

TAUN WE: May I present Lama Su, Prime Minister of Kamino...
and this is Master Jedi...

OBI-WAN: Obi-Wan Kenobi.

LAMA SU indicates a chair. OBI-WAN remains standing. TAUN
WE hovers. The room is bathed in brilliant white light. The
whole place is ultra high-tech.

LAMA SU: I trust you are going to enjoy your stay. We are
most happy you have arrived at the best part of the season.

OBI-WAN: You make me feel most welcome.

LAMA SU: Please... (gestures to chair) And now to business.
You will be delighted to hear we are on schedule. Two
hundred thousand units are ready, with another million well
on the way.

OBI-WAN: (improvising) That is... good news.

LAMA SU: Please tell your Master Jinn that we have
every confidence his order will be met on time and in full.
He is well, I hope.

OBI-WAN: I'm sorry? Master - ?

LAMA SU: Jedi Master Qui Gon Jinn. He's still a leading member
of the Jedi Council, is he not?

OBI-WAN: Master Sifo-Dyas was killed almost ten years ago.

LAMA SU: Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. But I'm sure he
would have been proud of the army we've built for him.

OBI-WAN: The army?

LAMA SU: Yes, a clone army. And, I must say, one of the
finest we've ever created.

OBI-WAN: Tell me, Prime Minister, when my Master first
contacted you about the army, did he say who it was for?

LAMA SU: Of course he did. This army is for the Republic.
But you must be anxious to inspect the units for yourself.

OBI-WAN: That's why I'm here.

OBI-WAN and LAMA SU rise and walk toward the door.

This brings up questions, was Qui Gon behind it? Why would Qui Gon order an army? Did Qui Gon want to train Anakin for good, or for bad? I think it adds so much more.

Well, I'm not hellbent on changing TC-14s assumption that they are Jedi.  It just doesn't fit, anymore.  I could attempt to dub in new dialogue for the droid, but it'll have to do the dialogue myself.  Not sure I have much of a droid-quality voice.

If interested, you can see a small scene of my acting in my own promotional reel @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhjXDbdriRo  It's the third scene in after the montage.  I'm wearing the black biker jacket on the left.

And I'm working on starting my own thread, but that first post is gonna be VERY LONG since I'm working on editing all three prequels at the same time (Episode II is almost done).

-NJM

Well i did open a thread for such fan editors as yourself, it was for voice actors for fan edits but it died extremely quickly. I find to keep in line with protocol droid voices maybe an english voice?

Nice work on those TPM openings, guys. Personally I wouldn't change that much, since I think it's the best part of the movie. Some good action and a very fitting introduction of two (main) characters and the Jedi themselves.

I have some suggestions for this scene, if you don't mind:

It never bothered me that Gunray contacted Sidious based on TC14 guessing Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were Jedi, but you seem hellbent on changing that, which is fine :P. The cobbled together line by Gunray is very effective, but might it not also work to just change TC14's line into something like "I verified the ambassadors identity and they are Jedi Knights"? It seems very reasonable to me that a protocol droid would know how to recognize a Jedi. Also, a droid is easy to overdub, and it would explain why the droid is still in the scene.

This is a great new introduction for the Jedi: we don't see their faces until they blaze onto the screen in all their ass kicking glory. But I don't think there is enough introduction for the guys of the Trade Federation. Cutting into the middle of a scene, where one of them stands with his back at the camera, isn't a very good introduction for the main 'villains'.

I love the new intro very much. I think it works alot better and also makes the Jedi look a little stronger. In the original, the jedi's intro is let stand about talkin, then sit about talkin, sit down drinkin. As Red Letter Media said they could of poisoned the drinks and why is there gas coming out of the floor, it that installed in all meeting rooms for the Trade Federation?

If a redub is done then it easier since there no lip synch.

The Neimodians arent our main villians and thats the point i think lucas failed in. The film is called Phantom Menace so try and show these guys as mere puppets instead of bein 'main' villians. They should of had anakin earlier in the story and Anakin should of asked who the Sith were, that would mean his interest in Sith started young, we through anakin would of learnt who and what the sith were. We the audience would know what the sith's motivation was.

Also, I get now what Lucas said about plot elements being too intertwined to be able to cut out any of the storylines in the climax.  I did cutout the Gungan/Droid battle entirely as just a sequence, but realized that if you remove the Gungans from the end battle, you also have to remove Padmé stepping forward to reveal herself as the true Queen when pleading to Boss Nass.

-NJM

I don't think the battle needs cuttin completely, just trimmed down alot. We wanted to see a battle. Not Jar Jar riding tanks, being thrown about etc.

Ah! I like the additional lines inserted here...good stuff.

I liked the original shot you had of Nute saying "Jedi ambasitors?" (sp?)

I'm also wondering: I really really hate the shot of the droids reacting to the ship landing. The animation is awful. They move as if they are almost weightless. Could you look at finding a replacement shot? I've thought about using the shot of the droids at the control panel as Anakin zips by from the end battle.

This is really shaping up well! :D

Just wish there was maybe a long shot of the Jedi exiting the ship or maybe something like that of sorts. I mean how can Obi and Qui Gon be shocked that there are battle droids mentioned after the vent shaft section. There are battle droids and moving droid fighters walkin around just in front of them, then they get shocked by the numbers of droids later in the film?!

I've made a revision to the scene adding in more dialogue from Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon.  I'll try to get it online today.

Was just thinkin about this, if i were to rewrite episode 1 and keep to the lucas version as possible. I would have the Jedi on a inspection of the droids they have. Similar to UN inspectors. Maybe the Neimodians are planning an invasion but end up getting an inspection at the wrong time, down to sheer bad luck. Maybe these droids original purpose are to protect stock from space pirates and rival merchants. Any body like this idea?

Because they're wearing Jedi robes?

Yeah but in Nicholas' version of events, TC-14 never actually sees the Jedi.

As amazing as the edit is, someone like Red Letter Media or Confused Matthew would certainly see this plot hole. I don't want to be like George here wanting to see everything on screen to explain everything but TC-14's comment is completely unfounded. He/She has no reason to speculate.

how did you get that from what I said

no the FIRST one who dies always looked like he was stood there with his saber up saying "ok ya can kill me now I won't bother resisting" and always bugged me so get rid of Palps landing and just have him leap/force run at them and cut to him having the blade already in the FIRST of the 3 jedi to get killed off.

Oh sorry Bar Bar i understand what you mean now.
