Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread

That is really cool amobex!

I think your use of Rey’s lines about balance from TLJ was a cool idea that I haven’t seen discussed or executed before. This would be a great approach for anyone who may have wanted to depict Rey “growing beyond” some old Jedi perspective. She has all of these things in her, but it is all a part of the Force.

If it were me, I think I would wait and cut to shots of Leia (or any of her other friends), until after she starts saying “be with me”. I think it would be a clever thing if the audience (and maybe even Rey) thought she was calling on the past Jedi for guidance, but then get glimpses of the people she cares about, the people that motivate her. I could silent shots of Finn, Poe, Leia, Luke, etc. hugging/smiling/encouraging Rey. The last shot could be of Leia when she says “Never be afraid of who you are”, then we could get the balance sequence that you depicted. These ideas could work in tandem, but they could work independently for other editors just as well.

I think keeping the ghosts works too. You could argue their presence validates Rey’s thoughts and actions. Almost like she reached a point of enlightenment, and that connected her with the Jedi, rather than just saying “be with me” over and over again.

I’m not sure if some of the scene restructuring works, but a big part of that is how hard it is to detach the shots from the flow of the score. It did give me a thought though about Ben’s arrival. The movie does seem to depict Rey sensing his presence before she “agrees” to kill Palpatine, which implies that whole build-up is a ruse. I wonder how it would feel if we cut that acknowledgement, and saved it so she doesn’t sense Ben until she is about to kill him. So that whole build up is genuine, and Rey is really about to kill him.

Oh shit. Very interesting stuff here. Wheels spinning. Think there’s a lot of potential

Thanks for the shoutout, BS. I’d be happy to provide the separate audio layers (music, “force” sfx, breathing) if anyone would like want to use it as a basis for their own edit once it’s fully done:

Yeah this actually works surprisingly well. I think there’s a scene in DOTF where the Force sort of connects all the present day heroes? It was an idea I had thought about way back when, if instead of her hearing the voices of all the Jedi, she hears the voices of her friends, and that’s what gave her the strength. Completely forgot about that. Would be interested to see how it could be accomplished!

I like trying to find some way to include that exchange. That’s where something like “you have no one here” comes in, although when I tried it I wasn’t crazy about it. Maybe if there’s a line to follow up “but the only family you have here” with something like “will soon be dead.” I worry that the cut off and door opening might not work, although I’d be curious to see it in action.

Now that Ascendant V2 is out, I made a Google Doc with what are think are the minimum dialogue changes needed to sell Rey Nobody. Most of these changed were inspired by (or copied from) DominicCobb’s workprint: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cPqS3MOUOwC-t1xQu4rbxbzq4laJ996bjQDPIViOmUI/edit?usp=sharing

I’d like to put together a workprint myself with these changes, I just need to figure out a lossless audio workflow.

Have you cobbled together Kylo saying “but you aren’t”? That’s an interesting idea.

Here’s the general update, since people are asking. Yes there was a workprint, but there’ve been so many changes since then that I’ve taken it down for now. There will be a new workprint eventually. I said I was going to send one out a few months ago but had second thoughts. Part of my dilemma at this point is how long I’m willing to wait for elements that are being made for Hal’s edit to be ready. I know in the meantime some of these things have been finished, and I plan to add them and potentially do another workprint then. But in the meantime I am busy with the holidays and finishing up a V2 of my ROTS edit.

Thanks for your patience everyone!

I’ve been messing with the big reveal scene a little using dialogue from elsewhere in the movie and I’ve got this so far. It’s not really working as a cohesive whole but I think there’s a few bits here that could have promise.

 • I removed the actual reveal and just have Kylo poke at her insecurity re: the dark side, but Rey’s reaction and the music seem a little over-the-top for that. I did this because I intend to experiment a little with moving the lineage reveal to the previous Rey/Kylo scene but that’s probably a dead end. “Who you are… The dark side.” doesn’t really make any sense.
 • I removed Rey’s defiant “I do.” from the end in order to leave it a little more open-ended as to whether she’s actually tempted by Kylo’s offer to team-up to kill Palps or not.
 • I’ve tried to have Kylo suggest the dyad is something to do with them both being dark-siders or emotionally damaged or whatever. One of my aims with everything I’m experimenting with is to disassociate Rey’s dark-side fears from her lineage and associate them more with Kylo Ren, as I think that would better follow up TLJ and avoid rehashing ROTJ so much. I had to trim out the ‘what Palpatine doesn’t know…’ for timing though and that does become fairly important later.

I like how this plays, I think there’s only really two big issues, one I’m curious how the other scenes work now that you’ve cannibalized their dialogue, and two I’m not sure there’s really a big reveal moment here to match the music and Rey’s reaction (maybe there’s a way to cut that big swell?). I like cutting out “I do,” I think that works well. I think what she actually means in the film is that she’s going to kill herself rather than join him, which is an interesting idea, but the film undercuts it with the sound of the Falcon (I’ve tried to remove it but it’s not possible).

Make Han the other Skywalker that Yoda was talking about.

Honestly that’s no worse than who it actually was.

Yeah, they’re almost interchangeable. I think Han would be slightly worse due to the love triangle being unresolved and the fact that the other Force sensitive person was just another dude.

I don’t think making Leia Luke’s sister to resolve the love triangle is really a plus in favor of that.

Omg can we not do spoilers. Literally waiting to get home to watch show and things are being spoiled/revealed on a non bad batch spoiler thread?

I don’t have many pet peeves, but this is one.

Why didn’t you drop everything in your life to watch it within 12 hours of its release, huh? Totally your fault.

(I’m with you, by the way. Maybe we can wait a day or two before mentioning spoilers?)

It’s a fairly inconsequential detail in the episode. I wouldn’t even call it a spoiler.

I’ve apologized and won’t do it again, but let’s at least understand that I wasn’t out here dropping major details on the episode and I had a valid reason to share the small detail that I did.

Understand that people don’t like other people deciding what is and isn’t a spoiler for them. Just tag and hide it next time.

Key word: rumors.

The Resistance doesn’t believe it’s Palpatine at first. Hence why Poe says: “We’ve coded the intel from the spy, and it CONFIRMS the worst: somehow, Palpatine returned.” Implying they didn’t believe it was Palpatine at first.

What thread do you think you’re in? That line’s not even in this edit.

If it’s just the odd word can’t they be found within the movies?

The Crackling Saber is on hold as I got a lot of negative feedback with various scenes. The effect changes so much between day/night and with distant and close-up shots so it takes a lot of tweaking. I just don’t have that amount of time to invest in such a consuming thing atm as I’m trying to get through the other 19 shots I’m working on, plus my computer keeps overheating every time I use After effects or Premiere Pro for a long period which isn’t helping at ALL!

It’s a real shame this isn’t working for you. For the record, I thought it was looking really good in every iteration you posted.

I agree.

Maybe I’m just a killjoy, but the Kylo one doesn’t sound any better to my ear than someone doing a barely passable Adam Driver impression. To the point where I actually thought it was whoever had made the video introducing it first, until I realised it sounded “off” in the way that AI voices can’t quite get the inflections of sentences right.

I would say that it does actually sound just like Adam Driver, just happens that the inflection makes it clear it’s AI. That said, there’s a difference between what Adam Driver sounds like and what Kylo Ren sounds like. But I’m not going to be a killjoy about it at this point, if we do get the chance to make up some new lines, that’d be cool. But ultimately we won’t know if it’ll be usable until we hear it (seems like the AI can be hit and miss).

That would be very possible if it were a simple zoom or panning shot, unfortunately it’s much more complicated so significant castle damage would probably have to be modeled in 3d and tracked onto the existing shot. Needless to say it’s a bit beyond my capabilities.

A thought I had was potentially just tracking some cracked/crumbly textures onto it, so at least it doesn’t look so pristine.
