Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

As much as I think it’d be amazing if we got someone who looks and sounds just like Ford, I don’t think the people making this should feel obligated to pick the actor based on looks alone (nor should the actor picked feel the need to slavishly copy Ford). I trust Lord and Miller to pick the actor that will be best for this film. If it’s Ingruber, amazing! I’ll be as happy as anyone else. But if it’s not him (and let’s be honest, it’s a good chance it won’t be, considering how many actors they’re testing), that’s okay too. The sooner we begin to accept that we’re simply going to have a new Han Solo the sooner we can prepare ourselves for what I’m sure is going to be a delightful film.

How you pictured Anakin pre-PT

I also thought that the saber that Obi-Wan gives Luke is the saber that Anakin used for his entire Jedi career.

There’s literally no reason why this shouldn’t be the case in the PT. Like, as much as we disagree with things such as showing Anakin as a child and such, at least there was a specific narrative choice behind that. Not having Anakin use the same lightsaber throughout is just pointless and only serves to take away from the importance of the saber.

Same goes for Obi-Wan (though obviously to a lesser extent because it doesn’t get passed on). I always felt like it could have been a really cool and subtle but powerful thing if, after Obi-Wan lost his lightsaber in TPM, he uses Qui-Gon’s for the rest of his life. Just a little thing, but it could have been easily done and would have given some sense and weight to his changing saber.

Also, what the hell is Obi-Wan doing chiding Anakin about losing his lightsaber in AOTC anyway? Obi-Wan drops or loses his lightsaber more than anyone.

Delicieuxz, I agree. Endor has some amazing visuals.

Aren’t you the one who doesn’t think Skellig Michael has any place in a Star Wars film??

Yes, that is me. At least not in the state it was shot in TFA. It was ugly. At least they could wait for some better weather.

This is truly baffling.

Supreme Leader Snoke: Origins

According to the Art of TFA book, they considered making Snoke female. Palpatine repeatedly referred to Plagueis using male pronouns.

As I said before I don’t think Snoke is actually Plagueis, but if that were the case it could be an element of his character that was conceived later. It could even, hypothetically, be something Rian Johnson conceived that was then infused into TFA. We just don’t know at this point, not just whether Snoke is Plagueis but Snoke’s backstory at all. TFA is vague enough on it that whatever preconception as to his origins when making that film could be changed when making the next.

In the AOTC blooper reel there is a clip where Hayden is on the refugee ship set with Nat Portman. He burns his lip on the soup and says, “Ow that’s hot!” You might be able to extract it and use if for when he is on fire.

Supreme Leader Snoke: Origins

Oddly enough, the more I think of it, the more I wouldn’t mind if Snoke was Plagueis. It’s a prequelism, but one could easily look past that. It’s not hard to believe that the Emperor would have a master. If midiclorians are discussed, ew, but I doubt they’d do that. If its revealed he’s the real puppet master behind Palpatine all along, ew, but it could easily be that Palps wounded him (in a murder attempt) and he’s been hiding since, waiting for his chance or something like that.

Retconning the PT is not an issue, as Palpatine could have been lying easily or might not even had known he was dead. Overwriting the EU is not an issue.

The reason why I’d be okay with it is because realistically who is Snoke? If he’s supposed to be the new big bad, he sort of needs to be at least on the same level as Palpatine for him to seem an imposing villain and the ultimate evil of the trilogy. So, if he’s on the same level as Palpatine (and has all this dark side knowledge) where did he come from? That he was the Sith lord who trained Palpatine is as good an explanation as any, and the fact that he’s already been established helps reduce the random factor (some might say there should be a random factor, but to me if this big huge bad is just some rando dude that came out of nowhere it doesn’t feel quite right, when you look at the saga as a whole).

For the record though I’d say he most likely is not Plagueis.

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time

The crawl’s a tricky thing to do. The film’s current crawl is pretty good in its simplicity and intrigue. The problem is, the political situation is not so simple.

I personally love the opening line. I think it is a bigger topic. Luke Skywalker has vanished, and the state of the galaxy has changed in his wake. One important thing to remember when writing a new crawl is that the First Order is looking for Luke too (the crawls I’ve seen here haven’t mentioned that, I wonder if we could just assume why it’s so important for them).

I guess I’ll have to take a stab at writing my own.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

The notion that a film needs to have a main character to be good was always a misguided one. The issue with TPM I think is it doesn’t know who it wants its main hero to be mostly because Qui-Gon in many ways steals away from Obi-Wan’s characterization, and Anakin shows up too late. The problem isn’t that the film doesn’t have a main character, it’s that the two characters who should be the most important aren’t.

Anyway, Star Wars never really had a definite main character. Sure, it’s Luke’s journey and all, but there are arguments to be made for Han or Leia being the main character as well (arguments I used to have on the playground as a kid). Star Wars has always been an ensemble narrative, TFA follows that (and Rey is obviously the main character).

I think the simple fact is that Episode VII was always going to have detractors. Expectations were high, and if it didn’t meet your expectations, you were bound to be disappointed. I think in many ways the nitpicking arguments are essentially just the people who didn’t take to it (because it wasn’t exactly what they wanted) latching on to the little illogical things simply because they couldn’t get properly into the film (not because the little illogical things kept them from properly getting into the film). For someone like me who loved the film, I was somewhat distracted by the little illogical things the first time, but I was able to put them behind me the second time (once I knew they were there) and just enjoy the film for what it was.

Star Wars: Rogue One - * Non Spoiler Discussion Thread *
Time

Desplat is quite versatile so while he can do Williams’s style (as in the last two Potter films) he can also do otherwise. I’m sort of hoping for a classical score but with a very different tone than we’re used to from Star Wars (darker, grittier, more militaristic). In terms of old themes returning, I’d LOVE to hear the old Imperial Motif again (from 77) and the Death Star motif, and of course a healthy dose of the Rebel fanfare. I don’t think we need to hear the Imperial March but I’m sure we will. Any other themes should be off limits (except maybe the main title).

I don’t think there should be a crawl, at least not like the one we’re used to. That should be reserved for the Episodes. “A long time ago, in a galaxy, far, far away” should be required for every Star Wars film, however.

Which Star Wars actors have you met?
Time

I saw Billy Dee Williams and a host of other random background actors in person at the RI Comic Con a couple years back. Never met anyone.

I actually had the chance to meet Oscar Isaac at an advanced screening of Inside Llewyn Davis but it was first come first serve and I didn’t show up early enough to get in (long story). One of the saddest days of my life.

Had a dream last night that I met Mark Hamill and he was awesome.

Have you noticed any differences in various screenings of TFA? [SPOILERS!]
Time

Well I suppose this was bound to happen (should this be combined with the grappling hook etc. thread?).

I’ve seen the film four times. Each time it was the same. The first two things you mentioned never happened (in your mind those scenes probably felt longer to you the first time just because you had never seen them before). The third thing is in the film (you can hear Luke’s scream as the Cloud City hallway falls apart… I think). The fourth is definitely not in the film (you’re right you’re conflating it with something you read after, that info comes from the visual dictionary and has been all over the web).
